    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

    Nope! ;)

You just need to update your Sun Java version and remove a few stray entries from you HJT log.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Were you actually having malware problems or did you just come here for a checkup?

    Thanks for the welcome!

I wasn't sure if I was having MALware problems or not. My computer was just behaving badly (wrong forum, I know) but due to being rather a novice at this I figured something was hiding from my spyware and anti-virus programs. My specific problem is it takes 8-9 minutes for bootup and frequent, lengthy, unexplained disk activity. I'm frequently waiting on the disk to stop to use simple programs. It actually seems worse since installing AVG and other utilities used for the Malware Removal Steps (I already had AdAware and Spybot and my antivirus program is McAfee - huge hog, I know but it came with my computer).

Can you see from any of the logs I've attached if I have things loading at startup that I don't need or if I have processes running that shouldn't be, or don't need to be?

I do practice basic computer maintenance (CCleaner, IObit defrag, etc.) but the problems persist. One thing I'm not very comfortable with is the startup manager and task manager. I've heard many times to remove things from here that I don't need but I am usually unable to recognize what they are from the descriptions given. I'm afraid to remove or disable anything I'm not absolutely sure about. Same with Add/Remove Programs - I've removed all the baggage I'm sure about but some things I'm not sure I need or should even be there.

Thanks for your quick response to my original post.

McAfee is probably your single biggest contributor to have a slow startup. Try uninstalling it and you will see what I mean. We have free alternatives for antivirus, antispyware, and firewalls in the below link that you can use and they will not cause your PC to slow down as much as McAfee. If you want to try this, then uninstall all of McAfee and try using AVG and ZoneAlarm free from the below. Do not install any of these new items while McAfee is still installed.
