Any Registry people?

    Greatings. I'm in need of some information from a Windows XP (Pro) Registry Guru please.
    I've been trying to install Sony Ericsson's PC Suite 1.30.55.exe. To make a very long story short, I have finally gotten it to load to a point further into the install, "Registering program identifiers", though with the same error message:

    "Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\SECellphoneinfo_object.CellPhoneInfo.1\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to thet key, or contact your support personnel."

    I've tracked the UNKNOWN location to the Registry Entry below:

    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SECellphone_object.CellPhone
    CLSID {BB65CDD1-1FOE-11D3-8153-00500403AC07}
    CurVer SECellphone_object.CellPhone.1

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SECellphone_object.CellPhone.1
    CLSID {BB65CDD1-1FOE-11D3-8153-00500403ACO7}

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SECellphoneinfo_object.CellPhoneInfo
    CLSID {69C6BDB0-8162-11d3-81A5-00500403AC07}
    CurVer SECellphoneinfo_object.CellPhoneInfo.1

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SECellphoneinfo_object.CellPhoneInfo.1
    CLSID {69C6BDB0-8162-11d3-81A5-00500403AC07}

    As can be seen 4 folders are two pairs. My (wild) guess is that maybe because there are duplicate (pairs of) entries the install is getting confused. Perhaps the duplicate entries came from multiple attempts to install this.
    My hope is that the correction is as simple, now, as deleting one pair or all "SECellphone_object* entries.
    I don't know if these entries came from the PC Suite (attempted) installs or are somehow part of XP.
    I have Full Control and Read Permissions for all Hives and even for Microsoft Office 2000...because all 1402 errors are said to be connected to MS Office somehow.

    I have even gone into MSCONFIG and disabled all but MS neededs, gone back into (normal) desktop and tried to install.
    I know messing with the Registry is risky. I use Erunt to keep it backed up. NIIICE program.
    Sony Ericsson's support on this has been like a broken crutch.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated. I even be happy with an knowedgeable guess.
    Thank you.

    Try going to those specific 4 reg entries and check the permissions on those keys for System and for your user name. If you want to go over board you could add Everyone to those 4 keys.

    I know you have full rights on the system but try checking just those 4 to see what happens. Make sure you add System and your user name.

    Thanks. I think I did that with the permissions but hey, the way this has been going I well could have missed it.
    I also found those CLSID designations sitting by themselves elsewhere in the Registry for a total of four for each pair of identical entries. Kind of like the computer checking and cross checking entries.

    This Registry thing is a beast. Brain surgery anyone :) .

    A couple of things.

    Are you installing from a CD or a download? Check your install media for corruptions.

    I would uninstall and remove all stray reg entries for the phone and try again.

    The 1402 error as far as I can tell is a permission error. You have admin permissions on the account you are trying to install with but you have to add the System Group also.

    Do you have any sort of real time protection running like Norton or a firewall? They could be stopping access to the Registry. Try shutting down your protection while installing the phone.

    Thank you. These attempts have been from a download. I don't think that makes much of a difference because I had the same problem with the older version from CD. I gave up on that one because Sony Ericsson said the program was meant for SP2 only after it failed to install with the same (type) error message. Now that I had installed SP2 I downloaded the latest version...that is now SP1 and SP2 "compatable".

    I have tried this install from every which-way I can conjure. From disableing everything
    non-Microsoft in Safe Mode then attempting install in Safe Mode with Administrator and me (with Admin priviliges) to only Microsoft in normal desktop under Admin and me. So there should not be any real time protections running to hinder.

    Some of what follows will be redundant but I need it to be to ask the next question(s). Beginning with the error message. The new response is in bold toward bottom:
    "Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\SECellphoneinfo_object.CellPhoneInfo.1\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to thet key, or contact your support personnel."

    The "UNKNOWN" registry entries are:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes
    \SECellphone_object.CellPhone
    CLSID {BB65CDD1-1FOE-11D3-8153-00500403AC07}
    CurVer SECellphone_object.CellPhone.1

    \SECellphone_object.CellPhone.1
    CLSID {BB65CDD1-1FOE-11D3-8153-00500403ACO7}

    \SECellphoneinfo_object.CellPhoneInfo
    CLSID {69C6BDB0-8162-11d3-81A5-00500403AC07}
    CurVer SECellphoneinfo_object.CellPhoneInfo.1

    \SECellphoneinfo_object.CellPhoneInfo.1
    CLSID {69C6BDB0-8162-11d3-81A5-00500403AC07}

    I have additionally found the CLSIDs {BB65CDD1-1FOE-11D3-8153-00500403ACO7} and {69C6BDB0-8162-11d3-81A5-00500403AC07} in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLSID.

    These Registry and Sub entries vary in Permissions. All with me having Full Control and Read. Some having and/or not having System and/or Everyone Permissions. I will try as you have suggested to give all entries System Permissions. All System Permissions are Allow Special Permissions only. Should this remain the same for my addition of System Permission(s)?

    Also, you suggested removing all stray Registry references to this Cell Phone. I assume this means even the CLSIDs {BB65CDD1-1FOE-11D3-8153-00500403ACO7} and {69C6BDB0-8162-11d3-81A5-00500403AC07} under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLSID.

    I understand messing with this Registry is risky and I alone should decide if I want to follow your suggestions. I appreciate your suggestions and they do sound logical to me. By removing these entries I at least can try a clean install.
    I think all this trouble derives from this programs failures to remove EVERYTHING when it does it's auto rollback on a failed install. I also believe the duplicate entries are from the fault of this program install.

    I have emailed Sony Ericsson my complete displeasure with their inability to support the software they provide for full Phone funtionality and their suggestion I pay $75.00 to a Third Party to get their (SE) screwup corrected.

    I apprciate your time and suggestions.

    I would remove these entries only for now and do a Edit/Find for Sony Ericsson PC Suite in your Reg and remove any entries that come up. Your permissions are probably fine left the way they are.

    Have you tried downloading a .Zip file and installing manually?

    Sorry for taking so long to get back and thank you so much for your input. My wife's HDD crashed and it's taken a while to get everything back where she wanted it.
    The issue with Sony Ericsson has been resolved. They finally agreed that it was their problem to correct and connected me up with HiWired who took over the computer. Four hours later all is taken care of. It took most of that time to figure out EXACTLY the problem. It definitely was a Permissions issue. Each and every Regsitry Entry for Sony Ericsson had to have Permissions added.
    Again, thanks so much for taking the time and consideration to help. You were very right.
