They have used it for years, helped me some, not the next time. The new drug, just recently FDA approved is Chantix, its supposed to also help with appetite.

Zyban has some nasty side effects!

Known a few friends that have been on it, but like all drugs it affects people differently... one of the trial drugs we use for different disease has a remote possibilty of causing death by heart attack!

Thats what my doctor (at the time) a number of years back wanted me to take. It stated on the packet it could cause seizures. Cold turkey wasn't so bad after all. :strong

LOL.. I tried that a while back. Not recommended for people with Manic Depressive (aka BiPolar) disorder. I was going non stop, sleeping about 30 minutes a night and twitchy as hell. Of course, my gaming skillz were mad on at the time tho.....

yeah, cold turkey works for me :)

Didnt need it Bazza!.......I agree with Darlene, good old fashioned will-power!

IMO, nothing will work unless you really want to quit and develop a hatred for the stuff!
Why do you think ex-smokers are right pain in the butt to smokers!

Its all in the mindset (registry). ;)

My Dr. said Zyban and wellbutrin are the same drug, a mild antidepressant.
All I know is it worked for me. But I think what really worked is that I was truly ready to quit. My husband quit in January with the Nicoderm patch and is still smoke free so far.

I tried those nicoderm patches, but when I smoked with them it didn't make me throw up like people were saying it was supposed to. I just got an extremely huge buzz and walk around like I was drunk all the time and fell off things.

Got lots of feedback. Thanks folks.
I am lucky, I never smoked.
Occasionally I try 1 a year to remind me how bad it makes my mouth taste.
Plus all the health disadvantages are a great disincentive. Bazza

just read a book called 'the easy way to stop smoking' by allen carr. (its english)
which was really like a form of hypnotism. not only was it as boring as hell, but it just repeated over and over in a thousand different ways 'you do not want a cigggarette'.
it is making me quit, but i cheat all the time. :(

I found the easiest way to quit so far is to channel my hate of politicians. Bastards raise the tax on cigarettes a dollar last week.

Nothing is making you quit, just your want to quit. As long as you feel guilty, cheating is fine. ;) It took me a long time to quit, about 8 years, but I've finally got it done with a few short relapses. Just don't give up, just because you slipped does not mean the end of your efforts. Just a stepping stone and more experience towards your ultimate goal. :)

There have been some bad reports on the drug in Australia - nasty side effects and reported deaths. I really got excited when it first came out here, thinking finally something decent to help me quit. Unfortunately I'm epileptic so no go for me.:(

    good site here: http://www.tga.gov.au/docs/html/zyban.htm

my wife and i have been smokers for 40 years and she has a lung problem so was told to stop we tried most things on the market including ZYBAN tha did not work as the side effectswere just too much for her to deal with(being sick bad headaches and dizzyness).

we then tried champix thats the name here in europe it is chantix in the US,( if you google it) the only thing my wife had was i little bit of pain in the stomach but they worked and she has stopped with no withdrawl symptoms or hunger problems.

i am not sure but i believe this product is not available in the UK

Whatever works has to be a good thing.
One of my lecturers is married to an ex chain smoker
he quit cold turkey using hypnotism.
If I am ever smart enough to quit, I would consider trying that before taking medication.
Although I would video tape the whole hypnotism process ;)

Yep, I can't believe the prices when I glance at the smokers display stands.
Packs of 50,etc., to really keep you hooked.
    Bastards.:(

I too have a lung problem - I've had pneumonia 7 times in my right middle lobe of my lung and pleurisy twice, but I'm still smoking. I have a flu injection every year and a pneumonia injection every 5 just so I'm not sick with a chest infection for 3 months at a time.

So if this is what worked on your wife I'm very interested because my body usually suffers side effects; I'll check out if it's available in Oz, if not I should give Shanemail's idea a go.:) Hypnotism worked on my sister-in-law. zzz Thanks greatly for the info Bill.

I've been on Wellbutrin for depression and it didn't help at all when I tried to quit smoking. I'm using Chantix for 2 months and it's helping a lot. Still have cravings at times but lots of that is "habit." No matter what method a person picks, it's work to quit but worth the effort!!!

All i can say is that it worked for both of us we are now in week 7 and no ill effects just a little discomfort in the stomach, i take a lot of painkillers for a spinal problem and was a bit worried over the mixture but my doctor said try it for a week and see here we are 7 weeks later we have no craving for cigarettes and no problem with eating too much, i will tell you that your taste and smell improves greatly.

you do have to want to stop but these pills help a lot, i wish you the best of luck

OK I quit 18 months ago after 35 years of between 20 to 80 per day. I stopped, using lozenges to help me but I stopped them after about 4 weeks as they were horrid.

However I kept on and I'm now glad to say that "I don't smoke" to anyone who offers me a cigarette

I'm not the sort of person who looks down on people who do smoke (they say that there is nothing worse than a reformed smoker) My friends who I drink with in the pub still smoke and it doesn't bother me one jot. I say each to his/her own, but in the UK from July 1 you are not gonna do it in most places anymore.

They passed laws in California that you could not smoke in bars (pubs) it didn't last long. Guess the owners thought the fines would be better then loss of business. Your also not supposed to smoke with in 25 feet of a public building. The worst offenders of this one are hospital workers (in Bakersfield ) go figure.

Queensland state, in OZ, have some of the toughest anti-smoking laws relating to smoking in clubs, pubs, other buildings, etc.

I have no sympathy for smokers in bars etc., who pollute the air for non-smokers. It is also not real good for bar workers, or other support staff who have to work in that environment. Bazza

I quit smoking in Dec of 2002, and haven't had a smoke since (except for a few puffs of a cuban cigar back in Nov of last year). I used the nicotine gum, and it worked for me . . . though I had to wean myself off that at the end.

I have gained about 55lbs since I quit though . . . I can imagine the comments at my autopsy:

"His lungs look great! Damn shame his heart exploded . . ." rolleyes
