bad power supply, they're about 50$ at your local computer shop, real easy to put in, most likely thats what it is, if not, then its a fried motherboard or CPU in which case...... you should buy a new computer

What kind of PC is this post your specs?
I would check/Test the PSU first
Also check all cables, connections, look for burn marks inside the PC
    Any burnt smells?

    Let's start even more basic!! :D ;)

Have you turned off and unplugged everything and then replugged all plugs properly before switching on again? Can you hear anything happening when you switch on? See any lights anywhere?

If there is a problem with the monitor data cable (as opposed to power cable), if your video card is fried or if something else in the box has gone wrong that stops it booting up properly, you'll get the same results - a message on the monitor saying no input; that's also when other methods of diagnosis come into play. Double-check that the video cable is plugged in securely to both the box and the monitor. That's a common problem if the data cable has been bumped about and is loose.

When you switch on, listen carefully for sounds of any of the drives spinning up, (CD,DVD, hard drive or floppy) and look for lights on your box. Listen for sounds of beeps and for any fans starting up or ones not starting up that normally do. (A power supply fan not starting up can force the power supply to shut the box down again. Cheapish fix normally - about $20 for a replacement fan which you should be able to replace yourself.)

If there are sounds of life, there will quite possibly also be at least one beep from the box. Take careful note of whether it's one short beep or something else. A short beep means everything in the box checks out as okay. If it's something else, take note of length of each beep (short/long) and how many and order of beeps. Two possibilities that spring to mind for beeps would be three short beeps, or a long followed by three shorts. That could indicate your video card is up the creek and even if everything else is fine, your computer won't go any further because it's pointless if it can't communicate with you.

If you get more than the short beep, as well as saying what the beeps are, if possible say what your BIOS is, which is seen on the screen of a booting computer just as it starts up, so although you can't look at that, post anything you can remember seeing (possibly Award, AMI, Pheonix...). Although some educated guesses can be made about what's wrong based on the beep pattern, knowing the BIOS type can make it more certain.

If you hear no sounds and see no lights, it sounds like it might be a dud power supply.

So give that lot a go and post back with the results. Also, say whether you have or are willing to open the box and have a poke inside (don't open if it's under warranty and take it in for a warranty repair if it turns out to be something that a user wouldn't fix, like a loose plug). But no touching inside the box when it's turned on unless you know for sure if your computer is AT or ATX* and no touching at all unless you first touch something metal to ground yourself before touching components - don't want to fry your memory chips or something else!

    * AT or ATX is about whether there's a mains power cable running through the box which is DANGEROUS! If you can choose "Shut down" from a menu and then walk away and the computer turns itself completely off instead of leaving a message on the monitor until you flick an off-switch on the box, that's the safe one.
