not a tech and hardly classifiable as a geek, so sorry if I am unclear at any point.
last night and this morning I made 3 attempts at Major Geeks to download AVG antivirus to my "new" computer.
I went to download it from Texas2 the first time, Florida1 the second time and Florida2 the third time. each download was worse than the last. I also attempted to download it from it's company site, Grisoft, but on landline that will take 5+ hours and I just don't want to take that long-which is a laugh since now I've taken over 6 hours to not successfully download it-but I didn't know that to begin with.
I downloaded it with stardownloader-why it won't pick up grisoft's problem download site-the one you go to when grisoft doesn't work, I don't know. I tried to add the url but stardownloader couldn't recognise it. anyway, with major geek's AVG download, through stardownloader, each time I tried to download AVG stardownloader had 1 or more sets of download files (there are 4 of them) that could not connect to host. now I have NEVER had trouble downloading from Major Geeks with stardownloader before. just yesterday and today.

ok. "new" computer-2003 model that has just been started up.
Compaq Presario with Intel and Celeron cpu
OS XP version 2002 service pack 1, 2.60 ghz, 120mb RAM
ok, so it's not prince charming, but I traded for it and it's better than not having a computer at all.
have barely started using this computer, modem crashed bigtime on my laptop and am using this until I can find a way to afford a new one.

so how the heck do I get AVG to download properly to this computer? what's wrong with it?

Check your network card drivers and your browser settings to begin with.

I'd hoped I wouldn't have to re-iterate my first sentence, but I'll rephrase it.
I haven't a clue how to do what you said, Birdbath. I am not knowledgable beyond being able to find my computer's profile, create a file and download programs. sorry I was unclear.

btw, I downloaded another program through stardownloader after posting this message and had no problem what so ever with it, so there seems to be no problem with....network card drives (whatever those are) or browser settings (which I assume are on standard settings and I don't know where they are). just a big problem with downloading AVG

    Sorry Buzz. :)

You could try and clear out any reference to AVG in stardownloader. You might have a corrupt download of AVG in the downloader Cache or folder and it is blocking any new attempt at a download.

Or you could try a different Download manager like:

several days and several failed download attempts later, including one from grisoft, and still no joy. checked out tocows, really not user friendly-not for me, anyway. tocows is a site like MG. tried ClamAV. not a Lynex user, don't want to go back to programing my computer, not happy so uninstalled it. AVG keeps being unable to connect to host. sometimes it's nearly done downloading when that happens, so many, many hours wasted. very frustrated. tired of retraining these computers. getting too old for it.

insult to injury, I can't get my OE to work. when I first fired this computer up and tried to get OE to open, it insisted on opening in WinOffice. now that I'm online, it opens normally, but send/recieve is dead/de-activated. no idea how to activate it. will cross post this in a new thread...

A workaround would be to install Avast Home Edition, instead of AVG, unless you really want AVG.

    Avast is available at www.majorgeeks.com/download1968.html

I prefer Avast to AVG, just install it and forget about it. Updates are checked every time you boot up. No hassles. I've used it for ages, replacing AVG.
