Hi! I cannot use the scan option in my Epson CX4800 printer/scanner. It will print and photocopy no problem.
Error "Epson scan cannot be started"

    Their troubleshooting didn't help http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/...V_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=58606&infoType=Overview
    I've checked the connections.
    I've switched the connections.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled my printer.
    Help please!

Don't know if it's coincidence or not, but ever since I got my computer back a while ago for reformatting and reinstalling XP, many file extensions will not work if I click on it via e-mail attachment, etc., and now my scanner
    confused .

You can try sfc /scannow, with yoiur XP disc in the drive, and keep clicking retry. it takes a while, but it will ensure Windows protected files are o.k
    Have you run CHKDSK ?

    Hi! Thanks for your response.
I ran both sfc /scannow and CHKDSK. Still having the "Epson scan cannot be started" error.
    :(

Does this mean that someone reinstalled XP for you, or, that you did the reinstall ?

File extentions not working via e-mail attatchment, could be a firewall setting, or, as the scanner has only just stopped working, possibly a virus.
If no one picks up this thread, I would post it in the malware section.

Sometimes when I open an attachment, I'll get a window popup saying something like "Windows doesn't have a program to open this file".
My ZoneAlarm Firewall didn't give me any warnings, nor did my AVG AntiVirus.
Running a virus scan as we speak.
Completed scans with Adware, Spybot, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Tool, and Windows Defender.

I wonder if the scanner is broken? I'd hate to have to buy another one, I don't use it much but it does come in handy and I have a shitload (pardon my french) of ink for this printer that I bought with a Christmas Gift Card, no receipt to return it now.

The only other suggestion I can offer, is to see if Internet Explorer is up to date, as , sometimes when you reinstall, the updates are not complete, and some of the updates , if I can say this, tongue in cheek, have updates to correct the corruption caused by a bad download.

I followed the instructions, and it said to click on Microsoft Powerpoint, I didn't have that exact wording, but I did have something called the Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer, so I clicked on that.

Ah nuts! Scan still won't work. I happened to come across this in scanner settings. Does that help with any more suggestions?
Just a note, the printer/scanner is turned on, printing works and so does photocopying. Just not scanning.
I've tried scanning using the link in the Start Menu, as well as my shortcut on the desktop. No luck.
Thanks for all your help and patience! Appreciate it!

It cannot find the scanner !
Have you tried uninstalling the scanner, shut down and restart, to see if Windows can find it.?

    lmao
    Stupid thing, eh!?
It's an all in one unit, has both a printer and scanner. I've uninstalled it, then reintalled it, rebooted, even had a bubble at the bottom right of my screen say that it found new hardware.

Would you like me to try again? Do I do it in this order?
    (Add/Remove area) to uninstall
    reboot
    Install
    reboot

Otherwise when installing any printer, the drivers can be fiddly.
Windows tries to install at the same time as you swich the printer on to install it, and can cause problems, if windows requests are not just cancelled.
I know you have probably gone through reinstall, and feel like kicking the printer, but, if the uninstalling of the scanner in add and remove programs does not work, ....
Uinstall printer completely, answer no to deleting any shared, or, not used by any other application, and switch off the printer.
Reinstall with printer connected, but not switched on, until epsom software asks for it. Then switch it on, and cancel any windows found new hardware wizard, let installation complete, and windows will sy it has found new hardware, found printer, found scanner,(we reckon) found serial bus controllers etc;, then your new hardware is ready to use.
Then shut down, and restart, and it should all be o.k.

    I missed restart after uninstalling.

    Oooops! MajorGeek

Ok, I'll give it a try. Yes, I sure do feel like kicking the printer! lol Thanks again! I will be a little while, ok?
    Thanks!

Seems like I had a similar problem at work a long time ago. Make sure WIA is running. Start-Run-services.msc

Wish I could remember what we did to fix it, we had a scanner that was picky as hell!

Get the grey cells going Fred
    Oooops,
Have the file associations been solved.?
Was your Antivirus switched off when re-installing the printer.?

  24. Oooops!

    Oooops! MajorGeek

I won't know about the file associations until I receive some e-mail.
I didn't disable my antivirus program, but the virus scanning was completed and closed before I did anything.
Should I give it another try with disabling the antivirus program?

  25. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

The only thing I can see in Fred G'S WIA, different to yours is that yours is set to automatic, and Fred G's to manual. You could try double clicking, the WIA, and changing it in the box that comes up, to manual

    baklogic The Tinkerer

So many things do not like antivirus running, when installing - it could be worth the try- it might seem pointless, but to be on the safe side, run a virus scan on the Epsom disc before turning antivirus off, and shut down as many other programs as you can.

  27. Oooops!

    Oooops! MajorGeek

Ok, no go for that one. Should I change it back to automatic?

  28. Oooops!

    Oooops! MajorGeek

    Ok, I'll try that.
I scanned my Epson CD (original) and it's clear of viruses.
Maybe I can uninstall in safe mode? Would that be the best?

    baklogic The Tinkerer

Have you got the latest driver
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/...&oid=58606&prodoid=56291067&category=Products

[-] TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.04A
Windows Vista 64-bit Edition, Windows Vista 32-bit Edition
    epson12226.exe - 11.9MB - posted on 03/16/07

This self-extracting file contains the Epson Stylus CX4800 EPSON Scan Utility and TWAIN Driver v3.04A for Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit Editions. This file extracts to your hard drive and is placed in C:\epson\epson12226_cx42_twain_driver_and_epson_scan_utility_304a.

Other ideas, I have seen, are to turn off fast user switching,
And use either the "Home" or Professional" mode, not the "Fully Automatic"

  30. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

Yes change the automatic back in msc.
If you have not got the latest driver, above , I would try that first.
It is worth a try in safe mode.
Unfortunately I have to sign off now, I will look back tommorrow to see how you get on.

Thanks for your suggestion though! I'm learning that some problems can be resolved with "long shot" ideas, could be something really complicated, or something missing like this updated driver.

I do thank you and appreciate that you're trying to help. Any suggestions made could mean the difference between an issue being fixed or for someone to continue banging their head against their monitor in frustration. Ya never know, someone stumbling upon my post may read your suggestion and that's what's gonna fix their issue.

You guys are wonderful and cannot be thanked enough for your generosity of time, patience and ideas.

Thank backlogic, not me! He did all the work. I do agree with you about the long shots, that is why I post them. I can fix some weird stuff, then move my computer (hitting the power switch on the back of the PSU) and spend an hour trying to 'fix' the 'broke' computer.:D

Glad you got your scanner working!

:D It's all about learning. Most problems are the simplest things. To start trouble shooting, you have to look at the basics (is it plugged in, does the plug have power...) I am learning a lot hanging out here.

It is almost always that dang physical level...

All our efforts are about working as a team, looking at the problem , with different eyes can find some answers, that otherwise are missed.
It takes our patience, and your patience, to resolve some things, and we are always pleased to know we helped to resolve a problem. Your input was always important Fred , and your efforts to resolve are typical of majorgeeks members that I have bantered with, and watched the camerade.
