Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with it? RAM, CPU, motherboard or wires?

    Hi Denise,

    Just printed out your manual
(if anyone else does this dont print past page 13 - foreign languages ;) )

If you re-check page 6 of your manual
    when neither
    LED_D1
    &
    LED_D2
    are lit
    it = CPU/Chipset error

    Recheck that you have the
JATXPWR2 (12 volt to CPU power circuit) - 'Walters 4 pin plug'
    connected

otherwise I believe you're going to have to get that heatsink off and check that the CPU is located in the ZIF (zero insertion force) socket correctly.

    http://www.biostar-usa.com/knowledgespec.asp?faqid=99961
"if you are using only one stick of memory, it must be installed in slots DIMM1 or DIMM3."

although on page 2 of your manual it refers to these as
DIMMB1 & DIMMA1 (at least I assume they count em' from the left)

Not trying to confuse the issue any further, but your manual has two page 2's ;)
luckily for this example they both contain your RAM DIMMs

    Ok you guys !!!!!!!!!

    Guess What ?????????????

    Guess What I Did !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YUP, YES, UH-HUH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I GOT IT STARTED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :drool :foolish :highfive :drink :clap :strong :hyper :dancer :cloud9 :grouphug :dood :guitar :dancer :hyper :heart :D ;) :cloud9 :highfive :celebrate :wine :D :grouphug :highfive

I kept thinking about the ways that baklogic and I discussed to reset CMOS . . . by pressing Insert and switching the jumpers and I pressed the Insert button when I pressed the On button but nothing happened. I just couldn't understand why the Power Up light didn't come on. It could have been bad RAM or the CPU but since I was pressing buttons to try to start it, I decided to press the Reset button AND IT POWERED UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cloud9 :grouphug :dood :guitar :hyper :heart :D ;) :cloud9 :wine :D :grouphug ;) :strong :highfive :celebrate

I only have two small problems . . . probably not worth mentioning it. . . but the computer won't start when I press the On button, I have to press the Reset button. I went into BIOS and chose the default settings because the first time it booted up, it didn't recognize my mouse. Maybe that'll help the Start button problem too.

The other problem is that the font on all websites are tiny like a 6 pitch and the icons in my system tray are tiny also. I'll have to play around with those settings.

So I took a picture with the new PSU and everything connected inside the computer and another picture when I had everything connected except for my external hard drives. I'll use up the rest of the film taking pictures of my grandson today and I'll bring the camera in for developing tomorrow. When I want a disk of the pictures, it usually takes between 5 to 7 days, but when I get it, I'll post them all.

I'm afraid to connect the SATA card again though but since the only thing it harmed was the PSU and not the motherboard or the CPU, it might be safe to hook it up because the Corsair is 620W. What do you think?

    Well done, Denise.
Start up switch would appear to be :crap
I know that you have checked the leads went back on correctly , rolleyes , in your last re-build:(
Of coarse, you could try to change the restart leads to the start lead pins, if they are similar on the cable ends, and if it works, you will know that the start button is knaff.

That's a great idea and I'll remember it for the near future. . . for right now, though, everything is working except the button. I screwed the side panel on the case and I want to enjoy my computer before I touch anything again for a while. I might have some knowledge now about how to put things together in a computer but it looks like I'm jinxed when it comes down to it. I mean, how many start buttons break in half when they're pressed for the 10th time, or even the 1,000th time? And all the other strange things that happened along the way? I feel like somebody's telling me something and they're not giving me the green light.

I like the motherboard that you have though because it has so many ports for cards.

I'm glad that it wasn't the CPU or RAM that got damaged when I installed the SATA card. The PSU cost enough and if replacing it didn't do the trick and I had to put anything more into it, it would have had to wait a while. So, as the saying goes, I'm as happy as a pig in :crap :D

I set a Restore Point right away (you impressed that upon me a lot).

    Wise girl on both points.
We all hope you have a bit of quality computer time, with no hiccups.
I have been trawling around, but really it would be nice if Fred, Walter, Shanemail, and anyone I missed of the help lines here, could find out if that sata controller card are a problem. Does it need to be x64 ?
I did found 64 bit compatable PCI, or, PCI-E sata controller cards sata 1, but the fact that I found it, makes me ask the question.
So I will create a post.

This is the SATA card that I bought

    http://www.firewire-1394.com/esata-sata-ii-4-port-raid.htm

I went to the site and it doesn't mention that it's X64 compatible. I never thought about that before, but you're right. It could be for X32 only, which would set me back $100.00 (s/h included) if I can't use it.

My font settings are pretty messed up. They're about a 6 pitch and when I enlarge them to the next size up, they're so large that I have a bar on the bottom to go back and forth. I'm going to have to play around with them. I also can't get rid of the balloon tips. I tried 2 programs and I went into the Registry and changed some values, and I still get them, both on my old computer and on this one.

It's nice having a fast computer again though. When I went back to my old one for the past few days, I had forgotten how slow it was. It takes about 5 minutes to boot up and 7 minutes to reboot. This one takes about a minute or less.

    Thanks baklogic :)

A record-breaking thread, huh? I guess I had enough problems for it!

I'm looking forward to hearing what people say about the SATA 32-bit card. I don't know why I didn't think of that since I had problems connecting my 32-bit printer. But, you know what? The 32-bit firewire card work in the 64-bit system, so that's probably the reason I wasn't concerned about buying and installing the 32-bit SATA card. Hopefully, it was the 450W OKIA power supply that couldn't handle the load and now that I have the 620W Corsair, there won't be any problems.

I appreciate all your posts, baklogic, and for helping me to understand a lot of things that I didn't see.

Thats how I learned, the hard way, until I realised that Mr Gates was I believe a mathematician - then I understood much easily.I was good at the old maths, when I was young.
Take away the technical balderdash, think logically, and it is surprising how much you can understand.

That driver was for 32 bit - I downloaded and ecxplored it, and there was a pdf file in it.
Unless anyone comes up with an answer, I am sure it should not have caused the crash, as windows has to find it, before allocating a driver, then you go through update driver to see if there is a better one- but we still do not know if it was th start button that was the problem.
If all is well, and you have a little quality time with your new computer, - perhaps you might go to somewhere to have it tested, and see if you can get a replacement starter button to fit your new computer.

It might have been just a coincidence that the On button went sour at the same time the SATA card was installed, but this has been a strange build . . . LOL

I'd like to have the On button working again and I wouldn't consider trying to do it myself so I'll take it to a shop someday. The button basically broke in half, but horizontally (from top to bottom), not in depth (from front to rear). When I popped it back on, it didn't fall back off. But I can hear the click of it when I push it to turn it on but it doesn't turn it on.

I bought this kit because it was supposed to save me several hundred dollars over one that was already built with basically the same specs . . . I think I'm reaching that $ fast. But! and that's a BIG "BUT" I learned a lot about computers, and that's invaluable. When I was installing the new PSU, the setup was totally different than the setup on the OKIA. Most of the plugs weren't connected to the PSU already. But from building the pc, I just looked things over, saw the types of ends the cables had and what types of plugs were needed for each device, and I connected them to the PSU and to the devices. I could never have done that before. I would have looked at it and brought it to a shop. And, do you remember the "ghost" device that I had back on page 12? I remembered it but checked it out just the same, and I had the cable connected to the floppy drive upside down so that My Computer wasn't recognizing it. I remembered that and switched it around and I got the "new hardware" tone. Again, that's something that I would have had to bring it to a shop to have it fixed. So there's a goldmine of information in this thread for anybody who wants to build a computer and runs into some of the problems that I had. All of the solutions are right here.

I'm still copying and pasting all the posts into a Word doc so that I can do a search for a particular word that I want to know something about.

I would tend to agree on all points above.
It will be interesting what comes up in the other post
Even if it had got to the stage of installing drivers, I am not aware of incorrect drivers destroying hardware, dont see how it would be possible.

Do we even know that there is anything wrong with the original PSU ?

Not sure if you have already done it, but could you give us the details of the SATA card
    Make & Model
so that we can look into it a bit further
Baklogic obviously found it - but I havent

Glad to see you got it working Denise! I can't find a model # on the SATA card in your link. If the card turns out not to be compatible with Win64, I have an idea for you. If I am correct, you now have 2 working computers. Put the card in your old computer, and get a router/switch and network the computers together. You can share the drives on the old computer, and it is like having all the drives on one machine.

The transfer rate is slower, but it I am remembering correctly, you have a lot of small files, so that should not be an issue.

I have one more thought on that sata controller card, and that is -
It does not state pci-e speed required.
Remember you have one (16 x) and one (1 x ) and a standard PCI slot.
I cannot find anything to say it would not run in fastest slot, only the slowest (PCI)Unless Shanemail, Fred , or Asus can find anything.

I thought you downloaded a driver for it, so I assumed you must have found the manufacturers site.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    I emailed http://www.satagear.com
because they sell the card (and possibly make it)
    http://www.satagear.com/SATA-64-101_SATA_PCI-X_Card.html

I asked them if this product is compatable with windows xp x64

    their answer was

    "yes it is"
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

The details from this post in the other thread

This suggests to me that the card is compatible with 32bit and 64bit PCI slots.
I dont believe that has anything to do with a 64bit OS ???

    The above post states
(PCI-X slot required for maximum performance)
Have to guess that means it will run in a
    PCI slot
    PCI-X (1x) slot
    or a
    PCI-X (16x) slot

and should run the fastest in the PCI-X (16x) slot - ie: 3Gbps

Think there is a fair chance of it- gotta hate coincidence though :(
sounds like there is something strange going on between the power button & the reset button as well

If you do instal the sata card again
just instal it by itself (nothing plugged into it)
from what I have read today there are certain devices that will cause errors if they are plugged into the sata card while it is being installed.

If you are not in a hurry, I would wait for a couple of days or so and see if anyone else has any views on whether the sata card may be the problem

Preferably leave the computer alone for a week, leave it on all day, turn it off at night. Just to check if it is stable by itself.

Although I am sure you are keen to get something back out of it, after all the time and money you have put into it :)

    Good morning everyone!

Thanks for the info and ideas. I'm going to install the SATA card down the road sometime, but I don't know if it'll be 2 weeks or 2 months. Since it's X64 compatible and I have a SATA motherboard and HDD and my new power supply is large enough to handle it, it should work in my computer with no problems. I just need the driver for it.

Without looking it up in the manual, I thought that I have 2 (1 x) slots. One PCI slot is used by my firewire card and I have 1 more of those slots available and the 16 x slot. The SATA card fits perfectly in the 1 x slot. The 16 x slot had too many pins. As I said, I'm not concerned about a lot of speed. This computer is 5 or 6 times faster than my old one so I'm very happy with it. I bought the SATA ext hdds because SATA is faster but if I can't connect them to SATA ports, I'll be fine with it.

I think that the OKIA PSU just couldn't handle the SATA card. The motherboard is fine and so is the CPU (so far, and hopefully they'll stay that way). But I do want to network the 2 computers someday too. My files aren't small . . . they're very large, with most of them being between 750,000kb and 1,200,000kb so I have to store them on a lot of ext hdds and I back them up on ext hdds too. Since I have a DVD burner now instead of a svcd burner in my old machine, I'm going to burn a lot of backups to disk to free up some room on the drives. Since one of the ext hdds broke when it fell, I'm going to start burning the files that were on that drive using my backups.

I'm just hoping and praying that these severe problems have been solved and it'll work fine from now on. :wine

I've been looking through this thread to find the correct boot sequence but I can't find it (I wonder why?). ;) I set everthing to the default settings when the computer started up again, but I want to put it back into the right sequence again. Can somebody tell me what it is?

Old school boot sequence is Floppy, CD, HD. It is not a big deal as long as you are booting ok. I have mine as HD, CD. If I need to install windows again, I have to change it to CD, HD. There is no real correct boot sequence. If you boot from CD's a lot, make it CD, HD. For me, HD first.

My next question deals with eliminating the splash screen upon boot-up. Can someone help me with that?

The computer is going strong . . . it hasn't missed a beat and I've been giving it a thorough workout. I haven't shut it off since it booted up on Monday (or was it Tuesday?). They say the first thing to go with age is your memory . . . I believe it. :D

Which splash screen do you mean? The BIOS splash screen would be disabled in the BIOS if the option is there. The windows splash screen I think can be done away with I think, but not sure how to do it. Why are you messing with this kind of stuff?:D Are you poking Damion with a stick? I do not think Damion likes being poked...

    I emailed http://www.satagear.com
    again and asked them if
    this card is compatable with both PCI-Express x1 & PCI-Express x16

    they said yes.

Firstly I have an AGP board,

From looking at Denises Mobo manual it shows

    2 PCI slots
    1 PCI-Express x1
    &
    1 PCI-Express x16

the PCI-Express x1 slot appears to be very small
I always assumed they would be the same physical dimensions as a PCI-Express x16 slot, even if they were possibly keyed differently.

Question: are PCI-Express x1, PCI-Express x16 & PCI slots meant to be compatable with each other or not ?

    Shanemail,
    Surely to run x64,
    1/ Operating system x64
    2/ MOTHERBOARD X64 CAPABLE
    2/ DRIVERS X64
    3/ PERIPHIALS X64
Is that not how it works ?
If slot is x64, I would say that the motherboard is x64 compatable, and the same with periphials (printers, sata cards etc:

The small PCI slot is the one that I have the floppy drive connected to, so it's an IDE PCI slot (is that right)?

The 2 PCI slots - I have my firewire card connected to one of them and I'll have the SATA card connected to the other one.

The x 16 slot will remain empty unless I buy a new video card or some more SATA ext hdds in the future.

I read the information at the site where I bought the card and it says

Since I don't need RAID software, it seems that additional drivers or firmware aren't needed, unless I want to upgrade. Is that right too?

I learned a lot about computers, from nothing to something, but not enough to be sure about things.

Denise, look in page 5 of your manual - tells you which slot is what.
You will need to read the pdf raid users manual, sometime, to know all for yourself.
Very often the sata driver needs to be installed, but your system was o.k without it.
Unless Walter has a look back in, or the others know more , I cannot help you on that one, at the moment, as I know a little, but only sufficient to know a Raid system was useless to me.
As I see it, install the card, let windows find it , and then if all is well, DO NOT TRY HOT PLUGGING UNTIL YOU KNOW IT IS READY, IN CASE YOU LOSE DATA- SWITCH OFF, PLUG IN HARD DRIVE , SWITCH ON. SAME WHEN DISCONNECTING, SWITCH OFF, SICONNECT, RESTART.connect one drive, to test. If problems , at that time (cannot see drive , or, something ) then more questions need to be addressed.
Check up on hot plug acceptability, before trying any hot plugging.
If a driver is needed, you will either get Windows to tell you, or, look indevices, and see if there is a yellow exclamation against it. If so, go to update driver, in the propertiesof the item, and let Windows go on the Web, to see if it can find one ,first.

    Hi Denise :wave

Section 1, page 3 of your manual
just shows a picture of your mobo by itself
    the 5 slots are labelled

    PCI-EX1_1
    PCI-EX 16
    PCI 1
    PCI 2
    FDD1

the one that surprises me is the PCI-EX1_1 slot
I expected this to be the same size as the PCI-EX 16 slot

    When I emailed the site
    I asked if the card was compatable with both PCI-EX x1 & PCI-EX x16
    and they said "yes"
which leaves me a bit confused as the PCI-EX 16 slot is approximately 3 times longer than the PCI-EX 1 slot confused

The fact that you mention the card does not even fit into the PCI-EX 16 slot is a bit of a concern to me too.
As both the site and the email I sent say that the card definately fits.

    Denise :)
Could you check the card you received against the picture on the website you purchased it from
just to confirm that the card is keyed the same (the connectors that go into the PCI slot are the same length/pattern)

PCI-EX1_1 --> I don't know what this slot can be used for because it's very short

PCI-EX 16 --> this one is longer than the rest of them. The SATA card can't fit into it because the SATA card is longer than the slot and the slot has a clip at the end of it (like RAM clips)

PCI 1 --> this port I use for my firewire card

PCI 2 --> this port is where I had the SATA card installed. It ran longer than the card but there's a space between the pins of the card which fits the end of the port and the rest of the pins aren't supported. If you remember, I drew a diagram something like:

    ....... .......................... ...... ...................... = SATA card
    ....... .......................... ...... = slot

and someone said it was okay for the remainder of the pins to hang off the end off the slot.

FDD1 = my floppy drive slot

The pins on the SATA card are identical to the pins in the picture.

A little more definition of the slots:

PCI-EX1_1 --> I don't know what this slot can be used for because it's very short

    ....... .....

PCI-EX 16 --> this one is longer than the rest of them. The SATA card can't fit into it because the SATA card is longer than the slot and the slot has a clip at the end of it (like RAM clips)

    ....... ........................................................ ......D

PCI1 --> this port I use for my firewire card

PCI2 --> this port is where I had the SATA card installed. It ran longer than the card but there's a space between the pins of the card which fits the end of the port and the rest of the pins aren't supported. If you remember, I drew a diagram something like:

    ....... .......................... ...... = PCI1 and PCI2 slots

    ....... .......................... ...... ...................... = SATA card

    ....... .......................... ............................ = SATA card in PCI2 slot
Someone said it was okay for the remainder of the pins to hang off the end off the slot.

FDD1 = my floppy drive slot

    ..................................

The SATA page also says that the card is compatible with X32 and X64.

The pins on the SATA card are identical to the pins in the picture.

Some additional information about SATA that I just found:

    http://www.sata-io.org/esata.asp

(See the attachment of Drawing of internal connectors, not to be used for external designs)

I had used the connector type on the left to connect the L-bracket SATA adapter. According to the info in the Note above, the one on the left should not be used as an external SATA connector. It might have caused the problems that I had since I connected a cable to the inside L-shaped SATA connector on the left to a port on the L-bracket and connected an external SATA drive to it.

It seems the problems never end. The floppy drive is connected so that the cable that has the nib at the end is connected to the floppy drive, which worked before this recent bout of problems with the SATA card. Since it stopped working, I tried to connect it all 8 ways 2 times but it tells me to "Insert a disk into Drive A" when I double click on the Drive A icon each time I changed the cable connection around. There is a floppy in the drive. I tried 2 floppies to make sure that one didn't have a problem. It's recognized in My Computer and in Devices in Computer Management. I'm attaching a screenshop of Devices.

I'm sorry to keep asking you this, but does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong with it?

I was going to delete the controller like baklogic had me do with something so that it My Computer would see a new device, but I don't know if deleting this controller would do the same thing or if it would cause more problems.

It could be the driver problem, with the floppy, as it might have been corrupted, when the sata card was put in.
If you go to device manager, and select floppy disk drive, driver, uninstall, close console, shut down and restart, to let windows allocate it a driver, again.

I checked my manual . . . my computer doesn't have any PCI-E slots, just PCI1, PCI2, PCI-EX16 and PCI-EX1_1 (don't know what this one is good for), and I have the FDD1 slot for the floppy drive.

It found the floppy drive again . . . I get the "New Hardware" icon in my systray, but the drive doesn't work. It still asks me to insert a floppy disk.

Reading through my manual, I also found that if I don't get one short beep when the system boots up, an error is found during Post.

When I turn on my computer, I get the T-Force splash screen where I can press del to set up or esc to continue. I press esc to continue and I get the Post screen where it says that the floppy drive failed. I then have to press F1 to continue to Windows. I never get the short beep that says that no errors were found during Post.

I went into BIOS and checked the settings. In an earlier post, way, way back, I had these settings and Walter said that they were perfect:

IDE Channel 0 Master [BENQ DVD DDDW165]
    IDE Channel 0 Slave [None]
    IDE Channel 1 Master [None]
    IDE Channel 1 Slave [None]
    IDE Channel 2 Master [ST3320620AS] <---
IDE Channel 3 Master [None] <---

Since I got the computer up and running by pressing the restart button, these are the settings:

IDE Channel 0 Master [BENQ DVD DDDW165]
    IDE Channel 0 Slave [None]
    IDE Channel 1 Master [None]
    IDE Channel 1 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 2 Master [None] <---
    IDE Channel 3 Master [ST3320620AS] <---

The option to change ST3320620AS as 2 Master isn't available.

It looks like the sata card took channel 2,as yours is sata, I cannot check my other computer, at the moment, but I will, as soon as I can(I am using my old computer, at the moment).
Usually with IDE setups, I see Hard disk at master 0, and dvdwriter drive, as secondary Master , dvd as secondary slave.
But with sata, you got designated to master on 2, which worked well.

Silly question, have you checked that the power cable is on properly, to the floppy drive ?
Sorry got to go, going out now, for the night.

I Googled the problem with my floppy drive:

    - Cable is defective
    - Drive is defective
    - Bent pins
    - Cable isn't connected properly

    - I don't know if the cable or drive is defective because of the meltdown.
    - I looked at the pins and none of them are bent. The second pin on the floppy drive is missing but I don't remember if it came that way or if the pin broke off. I couldn't find a schematic or diagram of the back of a floppy drive on the net.
    - The cable is properly connected, the red stripe is connected to pin 1m but I tried all possible combinations with no change. When connected incorrectly, the light stay on all the time. When connected correctly, the drive doesn't recognize that there's a disk in it.

    So I can:
    - Buy a new floppy drive
    - Buy a new cable
    - Get the sledgehammer out of the garage and use it.

Why not combine 2 of your ideas. Buy a new one, and if it works, take the offending floppy out to the garage and beat it with the sledgehammer! Not sure about floppy drives, but you can pick up a retail drive from Newegg for around $6 or so and if it is retail, it should come with a cable.

Oops. I just did a quick look at the 'Egg, and it looks like the only retail drive was $27, and I did not see a cable with it. You should look around, the 'Egg kills you with shipping on inexpensive items.
