Young Thieves and Keystone Cops

Woke up last night at 2:00am and got up to get a glass of water. I noticed from the kitchen window two young girls standing on the edge of our lawn where my driveway meets the street. They looked like they could be a bit drunk and were resting. I thought nothing of it. Then I heard a car door slam. I looked out again and saw a young guy walking across the lawn from my cars towards the girls. I went to the big living room window to get a better look at them, when they spotted me and shone a flashlight at me through the window. I was pretty much naked, you'd figure that would scare them off, but nooo. They sauntered off down the street like nothing happened. So I called the cops, got some clothes on and went outside to check my cars. My driver's door was open and stuff was moved around, and the van was closed but all the storage compartments were open. The only thing worth taking in either vehicle was the flashlight, and it wasn't much. We don't keep things in the cars and don't usually lock them for that reason.
The fun started when the police showed up. I could see him down on the next block trying to find my house so I stood out on the street so he could see me. He came up and stopped beside me. We talked a bit then he pulled over and parked and got out as another cop pulled up behind him. I noticed the first car slowly rolling backwards towards the second car. I said to the cop "your car's getting away on you." He ignored me and continued talking I saw the woman in the other cop car realize what was about to happen, so I jumped into the first car and put it in park. He'd left it in reverse. He runs up, pulls open the door as I'm getting out and say's "what do you think you're doing man?" I told him. He looked skeptical and I said "why would I want to take your car?" The other cop filled him in and he quickly changed the subject. Finally after telling him three times a description of the perps and which direction they went, he left. I don't think nightshift agrees with him.

OMG those cops need a reat from night duties!

Glad no-one was hurt and nothing too valuable was stolen, but its still a PITA to have anything no matter how small taken

As general observation of how cops act I feel they get too caught up in acting as a person of authority and showing they are dominant and in the process they forget to simply think, they are too worried that any transgretion on thier part breaks the illision they try to create as the person who should be in control of the situation

I hereby name this syndrome super cop syndrome, most of the time we just want thinking cop not super cop,I know they are trained to act this way but I think ego gets caught up in there to

Saying that I think cops are great and one of dream jobs is to be an armed cop,I doubt I'd pass the psyc profile :D

You have to have a certain personality to want to be a cop I think. You add training on top of that personality and you get SuperCop.

SuperCop is what they have to be in alot of situations, unfortunately for you sibeer, this was not one of the situations that called for SuperCop.

@Rikky "WHEN DO WE GET OUR F%*$^!G GUNS!!!

I actually forgot that he did thank me for saving his car just before he left. He wasn't at all arrogant, just seemed a bit confused.
@Rikky. That's true about the small transgression, but it applies to almost everyone. When I was younger I couldn't handle being wrong or screwing up. As I got older I learned to laugh at myself, and life got better.

Did he drive off in the right direction? :D Sounds like he would fit right in here where I'm at. I imagine if you saved his life there would be ulterior motives for that too.
I was telling your story just now and was asked if he wrote you up. You know what I have seen lately it would not surprise me.

Over here i am not sure why we have a police force they are scared of there own shadow.
about two years ago we had a break in and because of my job i would get out of bed at some strange times on this particular morning i was up at two thirty, i found the door on the side of the garage had been forced so called the cops after maybe forty minuets they arrived we started to look what was missing when a call came over the police radio that a break in was in progress at the rear of my neighbours house i said to the cop that it was the next house all he said was it's ok another car will deal with that, needless to say the other car arrived thirty min later and the thieves were well gone.

the other thing that we have is every day on the news is a story of corruption we had one top cop put a new extension to his house on his police visa

yes it's hard to believe i know but all the top politicians and top police get visa from the government to pay for thing not directly covered I.E.hotels,meals,fuel,air fares, but this will change shortly as there has been to much abuse.
i am sure that there is a similar system in other lands as they can not always have a government official with them to pay.

i am not sure if it's proper to say it but a certain member of the royal family got the military to pay for all the alterations to his private home,at the moment the press are having a field day:mad
its all a load of *********

Oh lord you would not believe the misuse of tax dollars in the US. Couldn't possibly remember them all, don't believe anything is done after it's reported anyway. The exclusive contract given to Halliburton in Iraq ( which was Vice President Channy's company) is one. People in congress are always giving contracts to friends or relatives, who charge $500. for a hammer. It's been going on forever, the people in the USA have no say any more, we let the government get to big and powerful. Yet there are those who want the gov. to set even more regulations. rolleyes Sorry, drives me crazy like the taxes.

kids should be thankful it was a kind understanding person such as yourself and not me.

police response, and I use that term very loosely, is 2 hours to my house. I know, I have had to call several times.

now I just open fire and figure that my backhoe will hide any thing that disagrees with my story

Police response time in my city averages about 4 minutes - but we are not a huge community. When a bad egg is found (and there have been a few - including the chief) they are stripped of authority and shown the door . . . and if a crime was committed they find themselves under arrest and subject to a trial by their peers, like anyone else.

I have no idea where some of you live . . . but if the Law enforcement arm of your local government is as bad as some here have said . . . I suggest you contact the media and make it known at once . . . and sue them!
    Go for the gold! . . .

About 18 months ago my next door neighbour, a woman in her 60's had her next door neighbour on her other side kick her front glass sliding door in and then run in and assault her.

She had been having a dispute with this neighbour and his wife for some time - I mean really childish stuff as well as bricks thrown over the fence onto each others cars!

After the front door was smashed the 60 yr old's 34 yr old daughter jumped into her car and reversed up the neighbour's drive way and smashed up onto their front porch! She then took off after nearly running over a couple of teenagers because by this time everyone was outside checking out the commotion.

The police were called by the 60 yr old so they turned up fairly quickly had a look at the damage and heard her side of the story, then went to the other neighbour's house. About an hour later I was looking for my teenage kids and went and knocked on the door kickers house. I couldn't believe it! There in his lounge room were the cops having a good old laugh in a crowded room - the door kicker was the comedian.

This guy was the local pot dealer and was on first name basis with the cops - he wasn't arrested! But the 60 yr old's daughter was. They both should've been arrested but that's Menai cops for you.confused

as i reported the corruption goes all the way to the top.
the press are reporting everything and the government says it is taking steps but then it is all swept away the problem is too many fingers in the pie at all levels.
just an afterthought regarding suing here the legal system in very much in favor of the person with the deepest pockets, I.E. if you have a medical malpractice claim the hospital would spend every cent they had backing the doctors so you would most likely go bust before it got to court

Sounds like a matter for the Local Area Commander to investigate regarding the matter and his policemen. You're making some serious allegations against these cops that shouldn't be allowed to rest...all it takes is a simple letter of complaint regarding police conduct to the Commander and upon your own request can be handled in a confidential manner if you fear any repercussions. Following past Commission enquiries regarding police misconduct and corruption, Local Area Commanders come down quite hard now at scents of any impropiety....but they need to know about it.

The local news paper has opened an on line blog section for the public. The District Attorney (in office 30 years) on his web site slams this news paper section after section, which I believe to be really unprofessional. It's said no one will run against him, for what reason I don't know. It's a backward place with law enforcement and the medical community to match.

That's very true but it happened 18 months ago and I wouldn't be able to ID them anyway. I live in an area where it would be considered "a dog act" to report this. I just couldn't do that.

Don't get me wrong, I've made statements to the police regarding a young girl that was getting sexually abused by her father and also when I found a flashdrive with child pornography - there was identifying information of the owner on the flashdrive. It is still under investigation; I really hope they nail the bastard because my son's girlfriend knows the daughter of the pervert and he'd been molesting her for years as well. Her brother was also molesting her.

The porn movie on the flashdrive was heartbreaking - the little girl was 2! It took a long time for me to forget those images. I'm quite happy to report this type of criminal behavior but can't dob in the regular crim.

I know there are a lot of people who would disagree with me and I understand that but I have to live here and so do my kids.:(

Hi Snotagain. Understand what you're saying, but just for you to consider for the future.

    • I'm familiar with the manner internal investigations are done and how police provide a means of protecting the source of information (people in similar situations and living in close proximity). I've seen it in action. The only time word gets out is when the complainant blabs that they've been to the police.
    • If you were to go ahead and make a police complaint at this time and requested confidentiality, the LAC may not necessarily focus on the actual incident but may start up an investigation of the officers in question.
    • If you were to go ahead and make a complaint/allegations against the "suspected crim" to the LAC and request confidentiality, that person would be hit listed by the Detectives for observation until they could actually catch the person. The Detectives would also commence their own investigations surrounding the "suspect". So no one would know that you had pointed the finger initially because the Detectives would build a case against the person before they could arrest and charge him for selling dope/whatever.
    • Investigations against police can still be done regardless of time due to necessity of police reports when going out on calls, these are recorded hardcopy and online as are names of attending police. So not having an ID wouldn't matter.
    • Because Rosters for police are held on file (mandatory) for some time, a time frame is capable of pinpointing police, along with online checks of call out report made.
    • Internal investigations are surprisingly thorough as are level of confidentiality. (You can almost feel sorry for the police person being investigated during their interviews - Police get really tough on their own when there is failure to observe police rules and conduct because it is a bad reflection on the rest of the Force.)

I hope my comments have set your mind at ease should you consider reporting an incident in the future. If you lack faith in the police officers to make any future complaint, then escalate it to a Duty Officer (Inspector level) or go on to LAC level. But be aware when you start escalating like this, that you had better have good reason which these higher level officers will expect to hear.

Police are there to protect us and those that fail in conduct and duties must be disclosed and properly dealt with.
