This is something ive just started getting into myself, ive just built my first one sucessfully, what i learnt is that the most important thing to choose is the right motherboard. For gaming you want one which you can put a decent video card in so you want it to have atleast an agp x8 slot or a pci express x16 slot. And one which has DDR 2 ram slots would also be helpful. And you want one which you can put a good cpu in for. Different cpu's are compatable with different sockets, so decide what cpu you want and what socket it requires then pick a motherboard which has it. Ive heard that amd cpu's are good for gaming, because they provide alot of power for there cost.

I agree with lk_mills. Pick your CPU first, AMD or Intel. Then, based on the type of CPU you want, get a good motherboard (make sure you get the right socket type). Most AMD chips still use the DDR ram, and the newer INtel ones use the DDR2 if I am not mistaken.

If I were building a new PC now, I would lean towards the Intel Core Duo CPU's.

I would recommend going with the PCIx16 type video card. Don't skimp on the Power Supply Unit! A lot of people wind up getting a cheap one and have problems down the road.

ok, thanks for the help guys, but what i was trying to say was that i am completely dumb when it comes to pc's....

So i was kinda hopng for a couple of links to the right components etc, so that when i look at them, i do get an idea of what you are talking about.

ok first thing: what do you want to do with the computer? this is how you will pick all of your parts since there are TONS of different combinations out there, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. after we establish this we can help you with your build.

also, pretty much anyone, computer literate or not, can build a computer. its as simple as plugging things in where they fit pretty much lol

do dvd rw drives read and burn onto blank dvd discs?

And also if i was to get a dvd rw would i have to get another normal drive to read cd's and game discs?

yes they do write to dvds, and they also read cd's:) one drive is all you need. I think all newer dvd burners also write to cd's.:)

most motherboard will come with the need cables etc. i find TigerDirect.com a fun place to browse looking for ideas, they have decent user reviews and give some info on the parts. I bought my pc through them and was very happy.

the cables that come with the motherboard, will they be the cables that connect all drives etc?

  15. Jazagod

    Jazagod Command Sergeant Major

Usually yes. mine came with twice needed. most are in a box. If you are in store, simply ask to take a peeksy. I have purchased 3 mobo's over the years and all came with wires. the only exception was a DVD, IDE cable. since the hard drive was a Serial ATA (SATA) I used the Hard drive IDE cable instead for my DVD.
when buying your next PC, make sure it has PCI express, and get a SATA hard drive. I was shocked when my DVD did not come with a cable...nor did my bed come with a wife:p.

If you buy retail versions of your parts they will come with the necessary cables. If you buy OEM, you will pay less, but the parts will NOT come with cables, cd with drivers, etc. Make sure you're check carefully before you buy and are sure whether you're getting retail or OEM versions.

while looking on websites, i noticed that the one mentioned is quite expensive...

What matters about the graphic cards, is it the name ( 7600 or 8800 etc) or is it the amount of memory it has (126mb or 512mb etc)?

o and also, do motherboards or another component come with an OS?

You will have to buy an operating system - stick to XP Home, oem version.
Aria.co.uk do a good selection of all you need. DVD Writer for all formats, Motherboards - I find Asrock pretty good,You buy your operating system when you buy a motherboard/ cpu/ or, hard drive to keep with Microsoft rules- you can buy it all in one place, or, shop around.
I just built a system that might be the type of thing you need.
    I have XP Home, oem
E6400 Core 2 duo (2.13 ghz, dual core) -comes with its own heatsink, and fan, but for gaming, I use Artic Freezer 7 Pro heatsink, and fan.
Sata 250gb Hard drive (Seagate, Maxtor)
    16 X PCI-E GRAPHICS CARD with 256mb ram
I have 4gb adata 667 ddr2 ram, but you can buy better quality for what you want- with crucial, or other., and 1 gb minimum - in dual cahannel mode (2X 512 mb sticks) - to double the front side bus.
A quality psu, 5 to 600 Watts, with high amps on the 12 volt rail - others can give you more advice on which type.
I have the Asrock Conroe Xfire E-SATA motherboard because it has e-sata for extrnal drives, and two internal sata connections, but it needed a bios update for the dual core, so find something that is Dual coe duo ready - not compatable, otherwise you will have to learn too much during the build 9like updating abios, and having another similarcpu just to upgrade the bios.
Amd are renowned for gaming boards - have a good read up on any reviews on them before you decide to go intel, or, Amd.
If AMD then the motherboard and cpu must be the same socket, and the same with intel - motheroard and cpu same socket number.
I also use round IDE cables for better cooling.
Research much - look at all the geeks replies.
They will all try thier best to help you.
Also if you buy from Aria, or, other reputable site, they will also help with questions regarding suitability of items.
If you post at majorgeeks, there will always be someone prepared to help, we get bored sometimes, trying to brake out computers, so we start on yours, but doing the opposite, getting you up and running.:D

the latest Core 2 Duo processors have two processors in one.The Dual core processors are the earlier version, so Core 2 Duo 2.13ghz, is like having two processors running so that programs can run at the same time, quicker/more efficiently.but have a read here

You are getting there - Core 2 Duo is in fact one processor, on top of another, and it comes into its best when multytasking- so good for gaming.
Elixer ram is o.k, but wait for more info from a gamer to come on, and direct you better,.
If I have time tommorrow evening, I will look up your motherboard specification, and see what I can find to help.
Now go and have a look at the Amd setup socket 774, and work out a system to compare, and get views on.
    Come on you gamers,

Good case, looks to have good fan system,- now see you have ie1344 (firewire) connections, so I will check to see if your motherboard has those too fit cables to.
