The name change wasn't permanent?

I guess it's up to you guys, but I for one was very disappointed to log in tonight and find that we are no longer remembering G.T. I didn't realize his memory was only worth a couple of months.

Like I said, up to you. It just seems not right to me.

Yea I agree with you completely I think that for all G.T./Gary gave to this site it would have been nice to see a Permanent G.T. Lounge

I think it may just be a forum update and will be put back soon...

BUT if its not a update to the forum i say it needs to be changed back as well..

Guys, I liked G.T as well. If I named every forum after a loved one who passed on, we would need more forums. I can think of many others who have passed on. In this cold world we live in, to have been given a tribute for 2 complete months was a very nice, respectful thing to do.

If you want to make a difference, lets get something together in our names to help solve cancer and make a REAL difference instead of worrying over appearances. I bet G.T would like to see attempts made in his name to saving others lives, then his "nickname" being tagged to a lounge, a nickname here really only know to a couple dozen people. Dont be so oversensitive and lets make a REAL difference.

I think the MajorGeeks folding stuff is pretty cool and has a long lasting effect. And if there was anything else that could be done in the MG name to help out, I am all for it.

Seems like quite a few regulars here are going through a tough time of one sorts or another right now. So the name change wasn't permanent. Seriously, I don't think Gary would want permanent "glorification" in that way anyhow. But what he would want, and showed on pretty much a daily basis here, is compassion for his fellow geeks. He always had time, he always had some comforting and calming words of wisdom, even if someone was being a total pain in the butt. So lets hold on to that and help continue to strengthen that culture at MGs, knowing that quite a few need that care and touch right now :)

NB: I'm up for joining/helping any focused effort that makes a REAL difference too......will give it some thought.

And please dont forget, Gary was not the first to pass on from our forums and previous ones. I try to give them their moment and respect due. Very few people get that. Many find on the internet that they think they have friends, but are forgotten within weeks. No one here will ever forget Gary, and except for those of us who did "know" him, no one else has any idea. So lets do something worthwhile instead of highlighting an unknown nickname to literally hundreds of thousands of people who literally pay no mind to it at all. Imagine what he might choose. A forum with his name on it, or a donation to cancer research with his name on it. I think its a no brainer. You decide.

Okay I can accept that proposition. Its nice to say lets do something about finding a cure for Cancer, for G.T./Gary. However the one vehicle that we all have right here at Major Geeks is the Folding@Home forum "Major Geeks DC-Teams (Neo, Folding, TSC, Etc.) " and it is poorly used, if at all by most regulars that have posted there heart felt concerns for G.T.

Hey this is a process that costs you absolutely nothing, and shows that you do really care, each and every week. Or you can throw ten/hundred/thousand dollars at "Cancer Research" and walk away and forget it...........that is until its your turn.

A suggestion MA, lets clean up the folding thread title to "Major Geeks G.T. Memorial Folding@Home Thread". This might just get some of us to make a Tangible effort towards "Cancer Research". Remember that a "Cure" lies somewhere in the Gene sequence and finding it will take massive computer power that the Cancer Research Organizations either have to "Pay" for or is donated through Folding, so come on gang lets get Folding.

Nice suggestion BCGray, but I would like first to know the reason the Folding@Home started. By changing the name it could diminish the initial and real reason that folding began at MGs, and in doing so cause offense. I personally don;t know the history behind it as it started way before I came to MGs. I'm sure it is the same for other regulars too.

Also by changing the name I feel it would simply be replicating the scenario in the Lounge that started this very discussion......... ?

A case of "Action, not Words"......through choice :)

    BCGray Guest

Guess I just prefer both "Action" and "Words" Lev, and most who Fold are doing so because, it does contribute so much to Medical Research...........Hey there isn't one of us that won't need Medical help sometime in our lives.......Now having said that I should in all honesty state that even though G.T. had Cancer he did not join the Folding Team, why I do not know, and I wasn't going to ask.

I think part of the reason that some do not Fold is the "Geek Intimidation" Factor. I was when I started, and I think you were looking at it about the same time Lev if I am not mistaken. I got some great help from some there, but was confused by the "Graphic Client" versus the "Console Client", in the end I chose the simple route the "Graphic Client". Hey I may not be the fastest Folder, but my little effort is helping, and I finally made the "First Page". Even sneaking up on MA, but don't tell him that. About a sticky with a In Memory thread, restricted by the mods while allowing one or two comments per person? That way the entire forum isn't affected, but we can keep our late friends ones permanently posted. We could even add links to some of the posts that most exemplifies why we miss the deceased.

    Just a thought.

I don't fold here because I've been folding for cancer research on another team for about six years, well before I ever heard of this place.

I can't fold because I am only on dial up still.

  19. ItsWendy

    ItsWendy MajorGeek

As I understand it, dial up isn't a problem for folding. Computing power is a big issue, I wouldn't bother with much less than a 1 Gig CPU (which still takes a week), but folding@home dials in, gets it work. hangs up, and chews on it for while before calling in again to swap work. No sweat.

Yea Gal 1998 Folding is still one of the few things that has no problems with Dial-Up, as it only accesses your Dial-Up to down load a small program, and then again to upload when finished. As Bill said slower machines take longer but the "window" folding gives you to complete is quite long so Most computers that are up to four years old will not have a problem completing assignments.

Sgt Tibbs folding for six years Wahooo :clap :dancer :highfive way to go Sgt, and yea anybody can fold for any team, the Medical Community depends on them all. I am just a newbie with folding here on MG, wish I had know about it long before. Again Congrats Sgt Tibbs

How about a memorial sticky or thread that is posted for Memorial Day. Then all can be remembered with a prayer, memory or kind wishes.

Also fyi a mod of a pvt card league I play in passed away of a heart attack last week. I had known him 3 yrs, a good soul. Others in the league (owner, mods, members) had known him longer 7+ yrs. I attended his memorial Sun., and was saddened that a tourney was not dedicated to him, only 1 game - lasted 40 min. then back to biz.

MG's donated to charity, emotionally tried to support his family, friends and genuinely showed their love for their member, that is true friendship and lasts forever in your hearts.

    Respectfully,

    Peg

I don't know about our timing being the same, but yes, I did look into folding. Downloaded the software and started folding with no problems, so would encourage anyone else with PC capacity to do so. It is simple enough to set up, so please don't all any "Geek Intimidation" Factor to get the better of you.......you CAN do it :D

I need to make some adaptations to my laptop to keep folding....kinda hard when you have to shut it down during transportation etc. I'm working on this so I can get folding again :)

Its really as easy as downloading a program, letting it run, tell it to use cpu cycles not in use, I think you can even set it to only run at idle. You can make a difference and it wont even effect your computer use, nor cost you a dollar. That is really incredible stuff. Most people live on a budget, so this is a great alternative.

Thank you Peg. I know others here were probably unclear and it came as a shock to them. I would love to make a note on these forums to my passed away grandparents (4), a friend who commited suicide in 1983, a cousin who had 3 miscarriages, yet contined and and just had their second baby 2 days ago and so many others who tragically died before their time that I can not begin to list them all.

I am called Major Attitude most of my life because of a misunderstanding of my brutal honesty. So here it is. I feel I treated his family and him with respect and showed him 2 months of love on a forum that has over 600 people on it at times. Putting someones name on a plaque or something does nothing for no one. It was suggested and I thought it would be a touching gesture, for you the regulars. But lets be real, if you bought some Listerine today and saw on the back, R.I.P Joe Blow, would you care who Joe Blow was, or would you do anything about it? Like that situation, this is a business and how I make my living. Most people saw it and I dont think one or two people who did not know him asked about it. Thats a lot when you realize it was seen by tens of thousands. It was just a little something for US to remember him fondly by, a pretty damn cool way to say goodbye. I think that we can tastefully make a difference in his name and words are just words.

Its not how their death effects you as much as it is what you do about it that counts.

IMHO, although I did not know the person, I thought it was a loving and touching gesture to have a period of time in commemorating a friend. To quote "Peg" true friendship...lasts forever in your hearts.

I am sure your friend would have thanked you all for your remembrance and would also want you all to now move on while remembering him as your friend and one that apparently touched those who knew him.

I specifically stayed away form posting in this thread until now because I know that, like MA, I can sometimes be brutally honest with people and it doesn't always go over well, especially here in this type of media. Tim, you nailed it on the head with your last comment, Believe me, I have lost more friends over the years than I can count anymore. Instead of raising memorials, I keep their memory alive with my work. I am very active locally in certain community programs that helped them live as long as they did and made their passing as easy as possible.

Actions speak louder than words, and taking action in someone's memory will make a more lasting impression. I don't go out there saying that I am doing this for these people, but when someone asks me why I do what I do, I tell them about the people I have lost. This way, I keep their memory alive through my actions.

GT's family has at least some small idea of what he meant to us, and through that we have helped to remember him and if we kept the name up there forever, it would soon loose meaning through complacency, which is the last thing you want..

Very well said MA. I guess to me it was just a shock to log in and see it gone.
I do understand and you are right in what you say.

I will be looking into Folding. I hope it isn't too complicated for me.

Just to say that I am still floating around, and I am still contributing to folding. Medical research into such diseases is something that I support a lot. If you want to help out with the folding, then read the stickies in the Folding forum - even if you don't want to fold for our team they'll help you get set up.
