Ever emailed your boss for a raise...

In all honesty, my boss's cell phone goes off about every 5 mins or so, so it can be hard to have a serious conversation with him. We seem to 'talk' better in emails. So what the hell, why not email him a request for a raise?

Well, not sure how this will work out, but here is my email, in all it's beer inspired glory!

To be honest with you, I think I deserve a raise. When I took the Service Manager job, you knew what I knew. I have learned a lot since then. I can run computer diagnostics on the cars, at least the basic quick test, and then you or John can take over, but that saves you time. Heck, I diagnosed the red CLK that needed a lateral acceleration sensor. I do, and am willing to do very minor mechanical work on the cars. Hell, for a couple of weeks, I mopped the damn floor. How many parts people or service managers have you had that are willing to do that?

It has been a while since I started that aspect of my job, and I think I have learned a lot of stuff. I am halfway decent with EPC, I know what a 163 (ML) 203 (C class) 210 (E320 I think). My point is that I have learned, but have not gotten a bonus in a while, and still make the same amount an hour.

If you want to say, well, that is it, that is what I am paying you, I can deal with that. If I find another job, I will give you at least one weeks notice. This is not an ultimatum, just need to know if it is time for me to start looking for another opportunity.

And hell, I will post the bad with the good, I think I forgot to order the pulley for the Ford Auto folks C class. My bad.

Hope you had a good weekend. I did.

    E

Just thought you might get a kick out of it! And yeah, I am working on a deal with another company, I am not a total idiot!:D

Actually, yes I did. I have a rather odd job. Things are not done normally around there. If you have some information on why that is a bad email, please share.

Well for a normal office type job it would be, but sounds like your job it would be perfect as your presenting you case decently, but leaving it up to him to read it when he is free.

I don't know what your relationship is like with your boss, maybe the way you've written it is appropriate. If that email was sent to a regular boss... Personally I think it reeks of attitude. Don't be offended I'm just trying to describe how it came across to me.;)

Its not bad, its just forceful and kinda blunt (I can smell the beer from here :D )

depending on your boss, it may be the best way to go (no point *****-footing around) (edit- stuffing around ;) )
If it works, all power to ya

Having to ask for a raise is a very personal thing, no-one else is going to know what is going to work in your situation

    Good luck

Well, I did not get fired yet! I do see what you mean about the attitude part of it though. We were too busy for me to talk to him today, so we will find out one day soon. There is a lot in the email that me and him know about.

Knowing a ML 320 means a 163 chassis is very job specific, and I have gone out of my way to learn. When I got hired, he knew I had no background in the automotive field, and we agreed to talk about pay after 6 months. For the first 6 months, I got some cash, a nice widescreen LCD monitor, buy one get one free 320GB hard drives. 6 months later, I have learned, but no bonus, no pay increase.

In all honesty, we send some brutal emails to each other on a regular basis. I had an attitude on purpose. I don't make enough cash for my world to end if I loose this job, and I feel I am way underpaid. And most employees think that.

I just am at the point where I have learned enough background stuff that I am ready to really start learning stuff for my job. But I want to be compensated for my efforts. And trust me, I am not making enough there, even in our economy, not to find something else.

With it being drunk mail, I reread what I sent to him, and I do not think I would change anything. I need more money, or I need to find a new job. I need to know, why beat around the bush. Now sure, if this was a normal buis, my email would be inappropriate.

Well, if it is a matter of either a pay increase via your current employer or a pay increase via a better paid job, then fair enough. I would suggest that some kind of promotion/pay-rise with your current employer would probably be better (better the Devil know, and all that).

If i was your boss and i read that i would think it was hallarious, its the attitude which makes it so funny, its not really disrespectful, and atleast its honest. I espeacilly like "did you have a good weekend. I did." It wouldnt piss me off and to be fair i would consider it. But then again ive never been the boss of anyone.......:cool

I don't know if this is good or bad. The bosses have 2 new people, they had a meeting with them, then a meeting with the mechanic, I heard part of the first meeting, funny stuff. Dang, they went to the wading section of the Gene Pool to find these folks...

But they seem like nice people. One of them is good a fixing 'puters. He might be my replacement. He called an ATX case the boss bought recently "That's one of those 64bit cases."rolleyes

They did not have a meeting with me. Looks like the games are afoot. I anticipated this, I have known the bossman for a long time. And if I am being replaced, no problem. Well, I will make sure I post the results.

Yes, and he ignored me. Then again, I try to ignore the voices in my head, so that explains that.

Well, the game is on. I am going to meet with both of the bosses in the morning. Problems with my job, pay, and all that is going to talked about. Heck, I may be unemployed Friday, but I can't go on like this. I do not get paid enough for this much stress!

I have a pretty good job lead in a totally different type of job, so what happens happens.

    That is too funny! Here's my advice;

Dude, if you read this before your meeting, make a list of everything you do on a regular basis that is part of your job description and another list of the things you do that are over and above (include mopping the floor even though that is below and beyond)!

Tell the boss how much of a raise you would like to have, and if he says no...ask him when you can expect a raise. Don't mention the job hunt until you are putting in your notice.

Stay cool (calm your mind), think strategically (your worth and value as an employee), be open to negotiations (win/win position), be positive (thoughts become things). This is still a business matter no matter how personal you think it is or how openly you have dealt with management in the past. If you end up leaving for whatever reason, try to leave on good terms because you want a good referral from management when requested from a prospective employer.

Good luck...our best wishes go with you.:)

    Cheers, LS

Well, no raise for me. Cheap B@@tards! But I am still employed, and my stress level will be much less in the future. Many changes are going to occur next week, and more in a month or two. I am still considering a job change, depends on what happens. In a month or two, I should be out of the auto repair buis! :D They are supposed to transfer me to a new buis where I will be working with/on large format printers (they just got an 87" pinter in the other day.)

If I stay with them and transfer, I get my current pay plus commission. Oh well, I guess it never hurts to ask for a raise.

Thanks for the advice, and a place to blow off some steam sometimes.

I like commission a bit because then it becomes all about how hard you work to sell, plus to me its a nice challenge.
