    Hi,

Suddenly now nothing I do will make my Desktop Icons stay where I put them! Even sometimes while I'm still logged on, as in not restarted or turned off, they will go back to the left side position.

At the time this started, my start menu/taskbar started not keeping my 'SHOW Quick Launch' box checked and every time I log on I have to manually reset it!

    Any ideas?confused

    THANKS-- A-G-A-I-N!!!

Often this issue is related to web content being activated for the desktop. Under the desktop tab of the Display Properties dialog, click "customize desktop." Uncheck everything. Some installations have two tabs. Uncheck everything from both. Re the quick launch problem: get Taskbar repair Tool Plus :http://www.majorgeeks.com/Taskbar_Repair_Tool_Plus_d4307.html Taskbar/notification area problems are so common, we all end up using it eventually.

Another solution that will fix it, but not solve the problem, is to install "Restore Desktop"

It is located at http://www.softwarium.com/rdwin.html (not on MG). :cry

There you will find the version number of the latest release and links to download it.

Works a treat, but it is only a workaround to the problem.

I have something that persists in turning on "Align to Grid" every time I startup, despite me turning it off every day, so use this program daily.

I will check out the earlier links posted to see if they address my "Align to Grid" annoyance.:major

Forget that link I listed, as it takes you to another program by the same company, with no mention of Restore Desktop.:cry :( confused :p

    I will investigate further.;) Bazza

WEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLL...I'M BACK. Desktop Icons go back to the left again. Show Quick Launch on Taskbar still will not stay checked even after installing and using the Taskbar Repair tool program repeatedly. This isn't a huge problem like my infection problems but :tas I'd like one dang thing to work the way I WANT IT on my NEW COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the ongoing help...let me know if anything else comes to mind?

Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer. There needs to be a folder there named "Quick Launch." If not, create one. For general help with your system not "remembering" your choices, open regedit and navigate to:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. Find the entry for "NoSave Settings" and make sure that the D-Word value is zero. If your system does not have such an entry, apply the Registry edit from Kelly's Korner: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/savesettings.reg Copy the entries to Notepad, including the header. Save as.. "NoSaveSettings.reg" to your desktop. Then right click the .reg file and choose "Open with..." "regedit." Answer yes to the confirmiration dialog and you are done. The D-Word here is "0." that means that the "No save " function is disabled. This should correct the problem.

    I have 4 sub folders C:\Documents and Settings\..........\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer.
Please advise what sub folder (the missing dots above) I need to check for Quick Launch. Bazza

My PC already has HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. "NoSave Settings" and the D-Word value is zero.

I, also, have trouble with my very few Icons not staying put (bottom right). Bazza

Sorry--"Yourname." That is, your account profile designation.

At this point I've got to believe that something on your system is controlling this stuff. Do you have Google Desktop? That one often causes trouble. Do you have an Explorer "replacement " app? A specialized search program? How much stuff is integrated into your Explorer right click?

Finally, does the problem manifest in a newly created admin account? If all is well there you can switch: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151

    Hi All,

Well, I've got to tell you...I am at a total loss. I've done all you described except what the Microsoft link suggested because I quite frankly couldn't figure that one out.

I still have to start my 'Show Quick Launch' everytime and Icons still will not stay where I put them. This really irks the crap out of me.

I know it's not a big deal but I want this new PC to do SOMETHING MY WAY! :***
Well, I'm going in for surgery in a week and won't even be using this bloody thing for about two or three weeks...maybe I'll be able to stand starting over with all it's bugs and crap by then!:tired

    THANKS SO MUCH!

    Sorry for the delayed reply.
    I don't use Google Desktop
I use AOL which uses a skin over Internet Explorer v6 (that I have loaded).
I have used AOL for years :p so don't think this is the problem.

I often use Agent Ransack v1.7.3 for my searches. Why would that have an effect?
This program has a few unusual weaknesses, but I do not use it daily.

I have a few added-in stuff into the right-click context menu.
Any ideas if one of them might be the cause?

No recently created accounts. I am the sole user.

I'm baffled, I thought bigbazza was helping me? Now it looks like bigbazza has the same problem? Am I reading this wrong?

No, you are reading this right.;)
I am trying to help you by finding out why my bl**dy icons move each time I bootup.

I only have 3 icons that are causing me trouble so it is no big deal but, like you, I like to control how my PC runs. :D Bazza

Bigbazza- you've been around enough to know the confusion that this sort of thing causes. I did not notice that you had jumped in.

Me-again-- did YOU check your registry for the "NoSave Settings value?

To both--try disabling the programs that hook into explorer one at a time to see if the behaviour changes. Shellxview will give you the tool.
    Description: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Download link is a good way down the page.
Finally, it is not to difficult to transfer all your files to a new admin account. See Microsoft:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151
Sometimes explorer just will not behave. If things work right in the new account, I would just switch.

I am going on the road for 2 weeks so my presence on the net will be spotty at best. For what I have learned about basic XP use, you may find my Vox informative. This subject is not involved, and Bigbazza will likely not find any suprises, but for what is there, it's quite solid. To visit the Urls just copy and paste to your browser address box in a new tab and "Go." http://doc1101.vox.com/

Good luck to you both. -Doc
