    HI

    Avast Free

    and

    AVG Free

Both work well in Vista for Antivirus, My preference is Avast and have been running it for 8 months with various vista builds and the final RTM with no issues.

    Thanks

Do both support auto update, or do I need to manaually update periodically?

    Hi

I installed Avast and my IE & Outlook can no longer connect (even though I can still ping my DNS server, email server & various http addresses). Uninstalled Avast & all is well - reinstalled, problem back!!!

Is this because I still have McAfee installed? I am loathe to uninstall it until I have proved Avast works for me

    Advice gratefully received ...

Yes you should never have two antivirus applications running at once, they will conflict, giving errors like you noticed.

what I can say is I use Avast and have never had malware at all, but I alos follow most of the guidance here too as in what to install also http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

Thansk - all sorted now & working fine.

    Thanks for the advice

By the way, my work provides a free version of McAfee VSE for home PCs usually. They dont yet have a Vista compatible version (8.5) which was why I was looking for alternatives.

They expect to have it avaialble in a few months - would you advise I change to McAfee then or stick with Avast?

McAfees Enterprise versions are pretty good, so I would test Avast for now and see if you like it, however McAfees version will not be fully tested with wider audience and bugs removed as they are late in the game with Antivirus for Vista, which is why I woudl stick with Avast for now, then maybe change once McAfee is more stable with Vista.

Also does your company need you to install what they use if your using your home PC for work related jobs? I know some companies do.

No they give us laptops, so no need to use my home PC for work at all. I guess its just a sensible move to ensure employees home PCs are protected to avoid virus getting transferred to work PCs inadvertantly

Thanks for the advice - will stoick with avast for the forseeable
