Hello, to all. I have a Linksys WRTG54G router connected to my new pc which is running Vista. My older pc has a Linksys a PCI wireless card running under Windows XP. I purchased and installed this PCI card when I got the new PC last week. They are sharing the same broadband connection and this is running smoothly. However, and here is the big however, I can't get the two computers to network.

I've changed the the workgroup names to be the same, made the network private, and followed all the recommended settings to no avail. I still can't get the two machines to network. When I run the setup network wizard the vista machine "sees" the other wireless hardware but won't configure it. The wizard tells me to do this manually then automatically directs me to the Linksys web site, where everything is already set.

I'm not a real techie ... I can configure and do some things, but this has me totally stumped. Anyone encounter this problem. I'm so frustrated!

    1. network my pc's
    2. figure out why ...

then yes, I am saying what you hope I am saying :D

Now, I am hoping you can help ;)

So are they both getting Internet access? Or can they not share files/printers/etc?

Could you check the IP addresses of both computers? Should be found by going to Start>Run> type in "cmd" (no quotes)> type in "ipconfig /all" (no quotes). If the IP address (only first 3 sets aka 192.168.1), [all 4 sets for these] Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS server, and DHCP server numbers are the same, then we are close.

You may also want to check the network connection settings on both computers to see if Obtain IP address automatically is selected or not. Start> Settings> Control Panel > Network connections> right click on the connection you're trying to fix/look at> click Properties> select TCP/IP> click the Properties button to find that info.

So report back in, and we can go from there.

I have the same issue (internet connection is working on all pc's but files and printers are not being shared). I verified everything is the same as mentioned above and that ip addresses are obtained automatically. The only thing that is different is the ip address: my desktop reads 192.168.1.101 and my laptop reads 192.168.1.102.

Thanks for any help. This has me stumped.

It looks like you may be in better shape than the thread creator. Have you enabled File and Printer sharing? You can right click on the folder to share, click Properties, and then the Sharing tab. Change the button to Share this folder, and that should be a default, somewhat insecure share. To share a printer, right click on the Printer, click properties, sharing, change to share printer, give it a name, and then go to the other computer and go to Add a Printer, then select Network, and use the second text box to enter \\computername\printername and then continue with the installation wizard.

For future reference, the admins prefer users to start new threads for similar issues from different users, so that each creator can get personalized responses to their issue(s).
