Hello, I deleted this file on my own computer, and restarted my computer. Now I can't get to the login screen of my computer. I am currently on my brothers computer trying to find out how to fix this. Can someone please explain a method that someone who doesn't know anything about programing can understand? I can't log in so I don't think I can use my own computer to do anything.

Edit: After looking around, I see some people had a similar trouble with NetGear. I have that on my computer, but it wasn't related to how I deleted the file but I do think I can access it

All I can suggest is to find the file you deleted on your brother's PC (both PC's must have the same version of Windows) and copy it to a floppy disk. Then boot to a Windows XP CD, go into the Recovery console on the messed up PC, and copy the file from the floppy back to the location it should be. Be sure to make note of the exact path where the file was on your brother's PC (for example- c:\windows\system32) so you can copy the file into the right location on the messed PC's hard drive. Use this command in the Recovery Console with the floppy disk in the drive (you should be at a prompt that looks something like this C:\WINDOWS>): copy a:\MrvGINA.dll c:\windows\system32 if that's where the file was copied from. I searched my PC and have no file named 'mrvgina.dll'. Anyway, you get the idea....Good Luck!

EDIT: I searched Microsoft's knowledge base and they have no references to mrvgina.dll... Are you sure you got the filename right? The file isn't on my PC (XP Pro SP2) and not found at MS Knowledge Base.....

Thanks for that. I got a few problems with that. The quoted sentence above, I don't know what you mean by that. And also, my brothers PC doesn't have it, nor does my mothers.

Their is a possibility that the file was put in through some virus I think I contracted yesterday. Some malware got on then. Can someone else see if they have this file or else I have some problems.

    Thanks again

Ok again, but I'm getting worried. This is the message that comes up when I turn the computer on.

The Logon User Interface DLL MrvGINA.dll failed to load.

Contact your system administrator to replace theDLL, or restore the original DLL.

Btw, I don't have a system adminisatrator, and my XP was loaded onto my computer by a computer technichan (sp?) who owns a XP free loading disc which has unlimited uses.

Edit: Is this in anyway related to me having NetGear on my computer?

I'm not sure what you don't understand in my above post... boot to a Windows XP installation CD (start the PC with the CD in the drive) and enter the recovery console by pressing 'r' at the screen where it asks if you want to enter the recovery console.... that's all moot now anyway; it doesn't matter 'cuz the file isn't a Windows file. I did some quick research and it's either a NetGear driver file, or (probably in your case) a trojan/keylogger/spyware. Visit the malware removal forums for more help. You may have do perform a safe reload of Windows first so you can at least use the PC. Can you boot in safe mode? Have you tried booting with Last Known Good Configuration? Right when you turn on the PC, start pressing the F8 key repeatedly until you get a 'Boot Options' menu. Choose Last Known Good Configuration first, if doesn't work, try Safe Mode after restarting...

I think I understand what you mean. Getting a bit clearer for me. One problem I don't own the Windows XP installation CD, and I don't think their is one in my house.

Thanks anyway, I think I might be able to get somewhere now.

If the file is related to your NetGear device, you should be able to boot in safe mode and remove the drivers/software for the Netgear device in question. And, there is no such thing a an XP CD with 'unlimited uses'. Chances are, it's abootlegged or pirated XP or a volume licensed copy. If you paid this guy to install the XP, you should have received the CD with it's own unique product key. If you didn't get the CD, you might be dealing someone of questionable character. Anyway- boot in safe mode as I posted above, and go into the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and look for anything with Netgear in the name and remove it. Then go to Control Panel > System > click the Hardware tab > click the Device Manager button. Go to Network Adapters, click the little plus sign. If anything Netgear is shown, right click on it and select uninstall... reboot in normal mode and you should be able to log in....

Oh yeah- you don't need the XP CD to boot into safe mode or to get to the Boot Options menu... just press F8 repeatedly upon turning on the PC and you'll get the menu after a minute or so....

The guy with the CD is not shady or anything, and I think its the volume licensed copy I believe.

I've pushed F8 repeatedly and got the boot options menu. How do I get into safe mode though? Do I go to the boot options menu? If so, then where?

If you got to the boot options menu, the top choice should be safe mode. Use the arrow keys to move up to it, when it's highlighted, press enter. Another screen should come up with your version of windows listed. Press enter, and let the PC boot...

I don't have that option, which is very worrying. I get the options Floppy, HDD, CD-ROM and LAN. Tried them all, none of them doing anything.

I must be getting annoying, but thanks again.

OK- select HDD and keep a finger on the F8 key(don't press it down, just keep your finger on it). Immediately after pressing enter to choose HDD, start pressing F8; and I mean IMMEDAITELY! You'll then get the boot options menu with safe mode, last known good configuration, and lots of other choices. Try last known good config first, if it doesn't work, reboot, and try safe mode, then follow the steps posted above.....

Yes that worked. Thanks so much, saved me a lot there. Will probably see you around, this site looks good for computer support stuff.
