33 hours to run BitDefender online scan?

I'm working my way through the instructions for malware removal at:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

I'm doing the online BitDefender scan. After 37 minutes, the estimated time left is 33 hours. Is this normal? (I have a Dell Inspiron, 2.4GHz, 30 GB)

If this is normal, I will need to abandon the testing till next weekend because I need my laptop at work and at home.

Is it OK to split the test process?

It's not easy to answer that. Yes it sometimes shows very long scan times and the number of files on your PC and the speed of your internet connection can affect this. Also if anything else is running especially if other programs are using internet access will cause it to slow down.
    • Did you change any options from default?
    • Are you sure you followed all early directions exactly. Like using CCleaner on ALL user accounts, emptying any quarantine folders and Norton Nprotect if you have one??
I'm not sure what you mean by split, but if you just mean run one part and then wait awhile before doing the next step, it is not recommended. It could basically make anything already finished a waste of time since some malware could have time to respawn itself or to even download more malware. The order of the steps is very important! The speed at which you get them completed ( and what are also doing on the PC while running the steps ) is also important.

Just skip BitDefender for now and see if you can run PandaActiveScan.

What malware problems are you having the prompted you to run the READ & RUN ME?

All checks before BitDefender were made, including CCleaner.

I made my post after 37 minutes, when the estimated time remaining was 33 hours.

I allowed the scan to run for a total of 1 1/2 hours, after which I was forced to shut down in order to go to work. The estimated time had dropped to 10 hours. So that would be manageable for an overnight scan.

After 4 years of using Firefox with no problems, I now find the googlemail and BBC sites very slow. (I have used googlemail since it was launched.)

This happens at home and at work, so I can't blame my ISP.

These two sites are even slower with Internet Explorer, so I can't blame Firefox.

I downloaded an Opera trial, and found the same slowness only for the same two sites.

(I have a strong suspicion that these two sites have speeded up now that I am half-way through all the tutorial checks, but I will hold my judgement on that.)

All other sites, and all applications, run at normal speed.

Irrespective of the results of the checks, I want to run the full suite of tests. So if a genuine show-stopper happens in future, I will know exactly what to do. I want to be able to analyse HijackThis files, but maybe I'm not techie enough for that.

I don't know if the forum volunteers are prepared to analyse HijackThis and other files for someone who might only be doing a "dry run". But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

It would be unlikely then that malware was the cause of your problems. Note I said unlikely, not impossible. There are many thousands of types of malware infections with new ones showing up all the time. And sometimes the creator will design it to only impact a very precise thing. Thus the reason I say it is not impossible. Running all of the steps, not only removes malware, it also does other general cleaning which sometimes help.

HijackThis logs are not an adequate representation of whether a PC has malware or not. They actually show very little of what could be on a PC. So while they can be helpful, the other scans and tools we run are even more important since they will find much more than a HijackThis log alone will find.

Attach all of your logs when you finish the procedure. Even if you do not complete the BitDefender scan, just attach everything and we will tell you what we see.
