Have you got your defaults set up to read a new thread from the earliest (#1) to the latest. Or do you have it in the reverse sequence, from the latest posted back to #1 (quicker, IMO.) Bazza

1st to last, as its wise to read what the original poster wants that way the wrong info and not what the original poster wanted is limited, this happens as some threads sadly end up with one person posting off-topic and suggestion an alternative app in which the OP didnt want ( Fixing IE is a common one to have "just use Firefox" posted in it ), opposed to fixing the issue at hand, once a thread goes off topic subsequent posts then tend to be off the original question too as others think its a suggestion thread over trying to fix an issue.

Just to be the opposite, I like to read them from last to first. As I am on MG daily I go back 24 hours on any thread I am interested in and then read forward. It is a lot quicker than reading from first to last particularly if there are more than 1 page of replies. Still that's just me. ;) Bazza

In Software, I usually only reply to 0 reply posts, if I think I can help or more info is needed for others to help, I post. Once there are replies I start from 1 - end to see if I missed something or might be able to still contribute something.

When reading a technical post that interests me I start from 1st-end to understand the issue and all opinions, resolutions. For me this teaches me the trouble shooting process for different types of errors and how to be more a self sufficient user.

In Lounge - I start with latest of threads like jokes, pics, long threads because I already viewed the 1-last day, wk or so. New smaller threads I start at 1st.

Bottom line; if it's technical I start at 1st, if fun latest.

    Smiles,

    Peg

First to last, skipping those with a lot of replies unless I'm interested in the subject unless I have something solid to contribute.

In the lounge, I usually click on the down arrow before the post title so I would go to the first unread post in the thread, be it the first post in the thread or whatever.

I have it set to latest post first. But I read it backwards starting with the oldest working my way up to the top...

    shanemail Fold On

    me too, latest first

    somehow makes sense

when I open the page, I just scroll down to the last post that I have read and work my way back up to the top.
If you login everyday I would assume that it is quicker this way.

The threads are organised from most recently posted in on down, and I read each thread from the first post down to the most recent post. Hope that makes sense... I've been up since 10am yesterday, ready to go home now :)_

How do you change to see the 1st post instead of the last? I cant find it? After reading this it makes a lot more sense to see the 1st post when you open up. I usually see the latest and click my way through backwards. duurr!

    Thanks ;)

User CP > Options and scroll down to Thread Display Mode and use the dropdown menu to choose your option which for you will be Linear Oldest First > Save Changes

Ditto, did not look at that b-4, many options in there. Very user friendly forum tools here, did they come with it or was it tweaked?

Part of the default software for the forum, their are many add-ons but some do slow forums down so we limit them.

Damn, I read the word post as thread, as in read the latest threads first. I should've been more awake lol, I switched it recently to have the first post come up first, otherwise you're answering a reply unless you scroll all the way down. Logical really! :p

  24. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Exactly.. which is why I notice many off-topic replies and statements that have nothing to do with the original post, in the tech areas mainly.

I sadly read nearly every post and thread, mainly for content and spam.

I guess the poll results will be up the creek as people do not know the difference between posts and threads.

Threads are each individual question asked, or thread started.
Posts are replies to those threads.

I prefer to read the threads from latest posts, to the earliest post. I usually only go back to my previous reply if it is one that I have replied to earlier, otherwise I go back to #1 to get the gist of the thread.
Don't know if this answer clarifies, or muddies it up further. :D

I'm confundled... Can you take that again, from the top, slower? :D

In that case, I read the "OLDEST" post in a thread first, so that I know what the heck people are talking about! :D

  27. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

TBH.. I'm not suprised as the queston was not asked clearly enough,

    Poll Question is about posts!

Threads first post is a topic question on threads!
Is it forum threads or posts in threads?

If threads I read oldest first, similar to malware forum, if posts in treads then I read 1st to last for the reasons I stated on getting the answer correct and on topic, I see too many off-topic replies due to the original thread post not being read properly, that I will be deleting off-topic posts as it makes the forum look bad.
