I am not very computer savvy so this may be a dumb question , but my pc loads very slowly and I am sure there are programs loading running that I don't need to run , is there a program that I can use to control or stop nonessential programs from loading at start up ?

    Unless you have windows 2000

    start>run>typein
    msconfig

    Look at the start tab

You can experiment with the programs listed there, including stopping them all, without harming Windows itself. All actions are reversible.

However the information is somewhat cryptic. You will find some things related to your antivirus and printer, which should be ok. The suspicious stuff tends to have blank spaces in the title or explanation.

If you like to post a text file try this

Copy the text between the lines
    ------------------------------------------------
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\tasklist.exe /svc >"%USERPROFILE%"\Desktop\Tasklist.txt
    -----------------------------------------------

    then
    Start-Run
    type
    CMD
    hit enter

Now rt click and paste the above and hit enter

There will appear on your desktop a file Tasklist.txt

Post this file as a MG insert (preferable) or copy and paste it into a post.

    May i also suggest:
goto start > all programs > start up. make sure that is clear.
After that, have you used CCleaner, it has an excelent tools section that allows you to delete "startup" options.
Word of advice, make sure the items there are NOT something you want or NEED. A good way to be sure is to ask here, or google the questionable startup to see what it does. Mant programs can do this, but CCleaner is very trusted here in Mgeek world and has a great backup system incase you oops:)
    Always backup:)
here is the link in case you dont have:)

    Hi Studiot,

Ever one to try something new and learn something, I tried this on my 2000 and only ended up with an error message and a blank text file. Perhaps there's something needs correcting in the instructions for the original poster? Here's the error message I got:

'C:\WINNT\system32\tasklist.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I tried it on my 98SE thinking perhaps you had put cmd instead of command and got 'Bad command or file name' as the error and no text file.

Sorry chaps I should have mentioned, the tasklist method is WindowsXP pro only. There was a downloadable command for NT/2k called tlist.

For XPhome and 2K download the attached file and change it back to a .exe file. Place it in the system 32 folder.
Just call it with tlist at a command prompt.
