Cheap Mouse has a mind of its own!

My Dell mouse packed up today, so in haste I bought 'cheapo' from the supermarket (£4.99): Trust MI-2500X Optical Mouse.
I thought it would do the trick in the meantime, but it tends to wander about the screen when I try to hit the 'start' button for my menu in XP.
I have installed CD Rom with driver/software and adjusted Properties in Control Panel, but annoyingly this mouse is not behaving as it should!
Question is: Is a cheapo mouse really 'that' bad? Is there a lesson to be learned here? Dont buy cheap products?

Probably just a cheap mouse. If it's skipping around try a different mouse pad (if you have one), even a pace of paper, etc to see if something works better.

Usually. As for mice, Logitech, Microsoft and maybe Kensington are the 3 larger names that tend to be reliable. Plus, just from an ergonomic standpoint, having a good mouse can help.

As mentioned above, an optical mouse needs a flat color to sit on. Try using it on a different pad, if your using one.

I have same problem with my Logitech opticle when it gets over the logo in the corner of my mouse pad. Moving it to a solid color area of the pad always seems to clear it up. I'd say they hit it exactly with the advice there.

I have a PC-line mouse here I use. Unsure of the model, its one of those proper tiny ones. Sometimes when I let go of the mouse it wanders along slowly to the edge of the screen, its not a big problem it stops if i move the mouse and stop again.

I think PC-line is probably a cheapo make so I guess its probably right what your saying. You get what you pay for.

Im sure this never used to happen with the ball-mouses. Saying that you ad to open them up every couple of months and clean all the crap outta them.

I've had similar issues when we got a free mousepad at an airshow. It had a hologram-type picture on it, needless to say it acted very bazaar with an optical mouse.

    Sorted !!
Mouse is fine now, here's what I did:
Control Panel - Mouse Properties - Pointer Options - Unchecked Enhance Pointer precision. Tweaked the Pointer speed and :)

Thanks for all input on the subject. :)

Always used a piece of blank copy paper with an optical mouse, still have a couple around with the ball and chain though.

Good to hear that you got your problem cleared up. Another cased solved, even though none of us hit the nail directly on the head. Sometimes even a glancing blow gets the job done, though it may not be as pretty.
