    Hi all
    Online gaming crashed last night.
This morning there is no sound from the AC97 onboard.
Device manager gives me a 'code 10 this device could not start'.
I have tried reinstalling drivers and updating them.
Still have exclamation mark in device manager.
    Any clues?
    Cheers.

uninstall the drivers in Windows. Restart, enter the BIOS, disable the onboard sound, then boot into windows. Restart again, enter BIOS and enable onboard sound. This time, Windows should detect the new hardware, and you can install the drivers.

If that doesnt work... lets just hope it does ;)

    Thanks for the reply.
    Tried it, no good.
It recognizes the device alright and it says the driver is installed and working properly. When i look in device manager it says the device could not start.
Is it possible that the onboard sound fried in the game crash??
    Cheers

Jormm, i wish i could hear anything at all quiet or not, i have nothing.
Have you looked to see if the volume is up full in control panel>sounds, speech and audio devices?

Otherwise if you give the motherboard details we might be able to help more.

The device could not start message has turned out to be a driver issue, with pc's that I have encountered it on.

    Hi baklogic.
    Thanks for the replies.
    It is now sorted.
After uninstalling and reinstalling many times i had no luck.
I then uninstalled using add remove programmes.
Is this the reason for my failures, should i have used add remove in the first place?
If so, what is the point of the uninstall option in device manager?
    Cheers.

The option in the control panel is to remove the device and get rid of driver associations, the driver is still installed it just isn't associated with a device. The option in Add/Remove programs actually uninstalls the driver (and any related programs) from the system so you get to start over with the driver fresh from the CD.

Even with the CD in the drive Windows will still reassociate the one it already has before trying to install from the CD. If the one already on the HDD is corrupted then just doing a remove from device manager just puts you back to the corrupted file when Windoze reinstalls the hardware, hence the return of the issue with the first try.

Ah, thanks tmiller, that explains it.
    Stupid bloody things :cry :)

Jormm, have you tried headphones to eliminate a speaker problem?

Pleased to see you solved the ac97 problem.
Sometimes the simple answer , (add and remove) will work better than uninstalling, the driver, and in the case of ac97, appears to be a winner.
jorrm14, -- sobeit has shewn you that it could solve your problem, too.
