My AMD computer seems to have crashed when I was trying to convert FAT32 to NTSF.

I was following instructions because I'm very novice, and was told the NTSF were safer from hacking than FAT32,

well, after a while with ONLY black and white screen showing with bottom 2 lines saying repeatedly "verifying, etc" ...the screen finally went all black...and after I waited aVERY long ,long time .....I thought perhaps it had crashed...

so I hooked up an old substitute puter a friend had given me, in case of emergency like this...it has win 98 SE and i loaded AVG free edition, plus free Lavasoft fire wall.

I can't afford to buy norton system works for this puter, so now I'm seeking a free program like norton's GoBback.

    what do you suggest??

a big thank you for anyone who takes the time to reply.

my e mail address is : REMOVED

don't know whether I can find my way back to a reply on this forum, as it's my first try, and I'm not familiar with this at all.

Welcome to MajorGeeks! You can set it up in the UserCP section(upper left side of the screen) to get an email when someone replies to your thread.

I am a bit confused about your question though. Norton's GoBack looked like a back up program, are you backing up a disk, formating, just converting to NTFS?

If you can add some info, I am sure someone can help you out.

I had/have two separate and unrelated problems.

the first one I encountered was with my XP, on my AMD computer.
( I tried to change file system.)

    I suspect that computer crashed
    -------------------------------------

    since I wasunable to resolve that;;;

    I switched computers.
    ------------------------------
now the major concern is :

whether I get my substitute computer (with possibly or probably less memory and HD capability, than my other one)

to download ALL the necessary BASICS to operate in relative safety.

    I have currently:

    . Win 98 SE
    . AVG free antivirus,
    . Explorer 6
    . Lavasoft free firewall
    . Winzip
    . Reader 5

SO I need something to "GOBACK...... for when I screw up .........and have to "go back" like I used to do with Norton Systemworks.

I am totally unfamiliar with the GoBack program. Can't help you there. As far as the AMD computer, you could attempt a WinXP repair or a repair install. What kind of problems are you having where you have to use the GoBack feature?

I was not having problems with the "goBack" program.

I was trying to find a free "goBack program" and download it,

Intention was to provide me a resource for when I did something ...and didnt like the results, so i could go back to a prior time and day, to erase in essence, what i had done..

A free program, similar to Norton's "GoBack" program on Nortons systemworks. that would do the same thing....namely...go back to the settings I had originally, before i made some change that resulted in something i did not like .

I usually dont have this much trouble explaining things....must be old age creeping up

    -------------------------------

    P.S.

on the OTHER computer, the AMD, ....the one I was trying to change file system from fat32 to (ntsf ?).....and everything eventually went black screen.......I'm not able to presently to insert the XP disc, to attempt for it to make a repair..........because many moons ago the door got caught on hubbies sleeve, and was hurled across the room, so at present My master and slave D & (E?) drives are kaput, as well.

eventually i'll have to try to take the thing apart and see if it's possible to replace/repair the door set-up. MEANWHILE...I'M ONLY ABLE TO USE THE OTHER OLD COMPUTER WITH THE WIN 98 SE.

I get an email when someone replies to a thread I start or reply to. Click on the User CP for options, but I think you have figured out how to find your thread.

As far as Win98, I do not think I can help you. Sorry, been a while since I used it. If your drives D: and E: are CD/DVD drives, then if one is toast, just make the other the master drive and you should be able to attempt a repair on your AMD system.

Sorry I don't have more answers for you. The night crew may have some info for you!

I've used GoBack on Windows 98 for correcting small installation or configuration problems. I'm not aware of a free version of this functionality (which by the way is similar to Windows XP System Restore), There appear to be trial versions of similar software but nothing free.

Note GoBack is retains only a snapshot of recent system changes using up to about 10% (by default) of your disk space. It is not a full backup or restore.

What I would suggest (assuming you have a CD writer on the Windows 98 machine) is to make a full backup using one of the products from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads3.html

    -------

With regard to your e-mail address, it is recommended that you do not display it in replies on the forum as this will attract spam bots. PM a forum administrator (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showgroups.php) to have the one displayed in post 6 removed.

What Fred_G is suggesting is that you set up your MG account to have you notified by e-mail of when people post to your thread. The means for doing this is under UserCP.

However, this is academic as you are able to find and reply to your thread.

    -------

Finally, your Windows XP system. I presume you are using the convert.exe in Windows XP to convert from FAT32 to NTFS? Is this the case?

If the conversion failed and and the format is still FAT32 then you may want to retain your personal files before rebuilding that system. You could try hooking the disk up as a secondary drive to your Windows 98 system and copy the files.

If the conversion partially succeeded then you may be able to try a similar action with another Windows XP system but in this case you would need to address any security issues.

If your Windows 98 system has a CD drive you may be able to hook this up to your Windows XP system and boot from a CD. Alternatively you may be able to boot another media such as external USB devices, e.g., memory stick. In these cses you may need to look at the boot order setting in your BIOS settings or order for the correct device to be used for boot.

    dear helpful folk;

I really appreciate your suggestions, and will try to understand them and try them.

some suggestions may be "over my head", technically speaking, ...but in several days, the steps might be digested by my brain.

    sincerely, carolyn
