I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, Windows XP, and the following perplexing problem. My screen goes blank for no apparent reason yet I can return it to normal by closing my laptop(this puts it in stand-by by) when I open it and log in all is normal again. Can someone help me track down the cause?

could be either the power saving options in wondows but sounds more like the little button under the screen that detects if the laptop is opened or closed is faulty. could be the spring in it occasionally 'sinks' down & touches the circuit, making the laptop think that the laptop screen is folded up when it actually is open....

I'll second that notion about the switch. A friends laptop was doing the same thing, but in her instance there was some kind of gunk in the switch - but it had the same result of once in the while causing the screen to go blank just as if the laptop had been closed.

    Was a pain to clean, too . . .

Thanks for the thoughts, although when the screen goes blank it's not as if it's off or in stand by, it's a bright glowing turquoise blue, with nothing else showing. No task bar, cursor etc. I've checked for updates for my video card and looked in the event viewer but nothing seems to give me a clue.

Are you able to re-install XP on it? If so - that would rule out a software problem if the problem vanishes. If not - it's on to hardware checking. I assume you have tried a restore point, if this option is availble to you?

I do that when I have a perplexing problem on my hands - I've found that the lion's share of PC problems I have had or run into are software/malware related, and by reloading the OS most of the problems go away. May be lazy on my part - and of no help to you at all if you don't have this option available to you.

Updating my help request, by using the event viewer each time this happens I've tracked it down to this - QoS [Adapter %2]
The netcard driver failed the query for
    OID_GEN_LINK_SPEED
There are no Microsoft Knowledge Base articles for this error, does anyone know how I can fix?
