"Bangers and Mash, luverly grub!!..." :drool

"Bangers" can be any kind of sausage that is pan fried, (usually beef or pork). So-called because when cooking, the skins can go 'bang', or 'pop'.

..Anyone had 'Toad in the Hole', lately?..

I have no idea why, but your post made me laugh. I was trying to figure out what fried breakfasts we have....waffles? As far as sausage, you can get absolutely awesome kielbasa and peppers if you are in the right city.

I just went to London for the first time in February and tried a pie with meat and vegetables in it (is that yorkshire pudding?)...it was really good. Sadly, if there was bangers on any of the menus, I had no idea what it was and didn't order it. My favorite thing though was a dessert I got...sticky toffee pudding (? I think)...omg... so good. We stuck to the pubs though. I like your pubs. :D

There are different variations to a Full English Breakfast. Different cafes, hotels and people put differents stuff in. I would say the following is a Full English Breakfast...

Sausages, Bacon, Spam, Fried Eggs, Beans, Fried Tomatoes, Fried Mushrooms, Fried Bread, Black Pudding and Toast. And of course, served with a nice Cup of Tea! ;)

I think you are refering to either a Shepherds Pie or Cottage Pie. I beg to differ with Wikipedia however as it says they are the same. Where I live a Cottage Pie is what we call it with cheese on the top, and Shepherds Pie is the same but without the cheese. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepherd's_pie

We eat loads of Pies here however so it may be a different one alltogether.

A Yorkshire Pudding is basically just a pastry thing we serve with our Sunday Roasts, they are easy to make and taste lovely. Give them a go! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire_pudding

And as for our Pubs! Were a country full of drinkers! Nothing much else to say!

Come on LEAGAL you have to live dangerously some times and a good English fry up is the next best thing to sex.

i was born in the UK (not far from WAYNE82) in the north of England where the breakfasts are legendary also the Fish and Chips although now a bit expensive are still delicious(they don't know how to make the batter here)

all this talk of English food has made me homesick for the first time in ages :cry

Not sure a "good English fry up is next best thing to sex". I enjoy good food, good sex, good health (not necessarily in that order ;)) as much as the next person - contributes towards pleasures of life - but can't cope with unnecessarily fatty food types. Sorry - I need good energy foods. But then what can be pleasureable for one not necessarily pleasurable for another.:p

    Cheers

Each man to his own (sorry i misspelled your title in the earlier post) i have no problems with people who will eat healthy food, i am not a junk food addict but there are some thing that really give me pleasure and full English is one of them.
my wife is Flemish (from the north of Belgium) and every Saturday morning i cook a full English for her she is also a healthy food person but does look forward to a blowout on Saturday here normally breakfast is croissants with cheese or preserve.

Nothing wrong with an occasional blowout (I'm guilty there too, sweet toothLOL). Lost Dad at 16yrs - (great physique and hard worker - but wrong foods led to massive heart attack) - makes me that extra cautious. Still the workaholic, but play just as hard:D

there are two ways to look at it from my side, i have had the good fortune to be able to eat anything and not put on weight but last year i had a fairly serious accident and damaged my neck and back so i am now very inactive so it's not too good for the heart i have to try to balance pleasure with common sense. :yum

Understand where you're coming from. Moderation is the key.

One thing Dad taught me was stomach crunching exercises that can be done easily, anytime, sitting, standing, walking...(Explained his good physique/posture.) It's part of my own pain management exercise regime as I've suffered back injury/op, and need to maintain ongoing fitness level for demanding work and leisure. Health is pretty important. (Hated losing Dad so young.)

Bill, you've had it tough. Hope you're going to have aqua therapy (@ 30 degree celcius water) lined up after back op during rehab...good way to strengthen and lead up to land exercises.

You could always request fish and chips at hospital...but it won't be the naughty way you like itLOL

Actually, we do cook a lot of variations of chicken at home and when I go out, I usually order a salad... or if we go to Denny's, I get a burger with a Boca veggie patty instead of the beef. I actually do make an effort to eat healthy... even if I don't look it. I know I could stand to loose a good 50 pounds, but by the same token, I work full time night s and part time days, doesn't leave me a whole lot of time to do much else.

Just to give you an idea, I work 12 hour nights, 3 nights on, 3 nihgts off, then I work part time days (~30 hrs a week) on my 3 days off, the afternoon after my last nihgt shift, and the morning before the first night shift. Talk about lack of time. if anyone has suggestions how to fit a heathier lifestyle into that, I am all ears... I barely have time to keep up on the housework.

A Full English Breakfast is a coronary on a plate, I agree totally. Eat that every day and your asking for problems. Like you guys have said moderation is the key. I have a proper full breakfast maybee once or twice a fortnight.

I have cereal about 3-4 times a week. And the other 3-4 days I have Plum Tomatoes, Grilled Sausages, Boiled Eggs and Toast. Which I think you will agree is a lot healthier!

Sorry your missing the good old Fish and Chips Bill, I like that but from the chippy the best has to be, Meat and Potato Pie, Chips, Peas and Gravy! :yum

My earlier post wasn't meant to offend anyone...my apologies if it did. I simply have a problem with fatty foods (I have weak moments also - I am human).

Calltaker, I'm more worried about your range of work hours which besides putting your body clock out of balance (ie with sleep patterns, fatigue, stress) appears to also control when you eat. You do need to find what suits you best.

I have erratic and long work hours dependent on workload which cuts into private time. In trying work/health balance (does not include leisure time outings which I can still fit in) here's my routine:

    Food
    • Fibre breakfast with fruit, if rushed then 3-4 fruits with half cup soy milk into a blender for a delicious smoothie drink.
    • Always have fruit or nuts/dried fruit mix for small snacks to quell hunger urges (I'm a "browser" and eat throughout the day - but maintain a consistently low weight)
    • Sandwiches or a meal container (left overs) from home for lunch (take extra if I expect late nights). Lunch is prepared the night before and fridged.
    • Lots of water throughout the day, (@ 8-10 glasses)
    • I spend 2-3 hours per week preparing 3-4 different dinners, divided into 7-8 containers and put into freezer - so dinner is ready at night for reheat
    • Always try to have combination of (portions and part of that is) 3-4 fruits and 4-5 vegetables per day. These work as antioxidants and actually provide body needs while ridding it of unwanted fats.

    Exercise

    • Everything is an exercise by manner of lifting, bending, stretching - a must for me to help back injury. When possible, I use the stairs rather than the lift.
    • At home with computer, sit on Swiss ball so exercise by movements while working strenghtens abs and back .
    • Always do stomach (tummy) exercises sitting, walking, standing, even in company. This can be done so subtly people don't know even when talking with them - helps posture too while strengthening abs and back.
    • When on extended phone calls, at computer or client sessions, I manoeuvre subtle stretches, stand and walk a few steps in between sitting (calmly particularly with clients).

    Housework
    • Maintain a "clean desk/work area policy" eg tidy up after any job/clean up as I cook.
    • Spread out housework over the week eg laundry done whenever enough for 1 load - sometimes done as a break from job related work at night if brought work home;

When I was studying law part time at night while doing an average of 60hr+ week full time job, I quickly learned to organise times. My times then were work, go to uni (drive 50 kilometres from work North West to East of City) for evening classes, then home or back to work to complete work priorities, then fit in a couple of hours study time before going to bed. Weekends I tried to allocate some free time for R&R (Rest & Relaxation) and quick catchups with friends.

For me, it meant being organised and disciplined with my times (with understanding friends) - and it worked. Perhaps there's something from what I've contributed that you can apply with your hectic work life. Hopefully that's been of some help.

    Cheers

    LS

Oh yeah, for those that want to know the difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie. Cottage pie is made with beef mince and potato, Sheppard’s Pie with lamb mince and potato - hence the Sheppard’s bit. ;)

@ L.S. I do agree with you your opinions, here, but also consider in cold climates outside of Oz, a much higher fat content is required, just to keep warm. An estimated 80% or so of total calorie intake is utilized just in heat production by the body. Inuit ('Eskimos'), for example have to eat plenty of fat just to stay alive. An extreme example, I know - but you get my drift. That said, with modern central heating and reverse cycle aircon, 'prolly not as important as it used to be, even in the U.K. Trouble is, a lot of us (me included), get used to cold climate diets, then move to a (usually) warm climate and need to change diet and lifestyle, eh.

I thought the EU was trying to remove that designation. Something about less than 50% meat? I remember having them for breakfast as a kid, excellent!

White gravy with liberal amounts of hamburger in it, all put over a piece of toast. A favorite with the US military for breakfast. SOS :crap on a Shingle.

Also a diriviation of southern breakfast (but this is not called SOS), bisquits and gravey, the gravey being made from bacon or sausage grease, no hamburger. Yes, it's taken at least 5 years off my life, but it is delicious, especially since we eat it from the time we're babies.

@ LS - no offense taken, just an issue with me. I grew up in an Italian/Irish home, with regular trips to my dad's side (Italian) of the family for Sunday Dinners.... Let me tell ya, Italians know how to eat. I was fortunate enough to have a great metabolism until I hit the mid 20's, when it pooped out on me and I have been fighting the 'battle of the bulge' ever since. At my heaviest, I was over 400lbs, so I guess I can' really complain about being 250 now, but while I am not afflicted with self-image issues, I do want to be healthy as heart/cholesterol problems run in the family. It's just this last bit of weight that I am having a heck of a time getting rid of.

What can I say, I love good food. I try to eat healthier, but it doesn't always work.
