Would It Be A Mistake To Place A Wi Fi Usb Stick Inside My Pc Instead Of Outside?

    Hey everybody!!!

I just recently purchased a Nintendo Wii a couple of months ago. The Nintendo Wii console actually has internet channels such as weather, news, Opera Browser, etc.

In order to use the internet on the Nintendo Wii console you must either have a router or a Nintendo Wii Wi-Fi usb stick which plugs into a pc usb port. The reason you need one of the two is because the Nintendo Wii only accepts wireless internet signal.

Well I don't have a router and don't need one so I bought a $30 Nintendo Wi-Fi usb stick for wireless internet connection. To use the net on your Nintendo Wii console your Wi-Fi usb stick must be in a usb port, your pc must be on with an active internet connection, and your Nintendo Wii console must be on as well. [ie: if your pc is off you cannot go on the internet using your Nintendo Wii console]

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/06/Nintendo_Wi-Fi_USB_Connector.jpg/250px-Nintendo_Wi-Fi_USB_Connector.jpg

The Wi-Fi usb stick came with a one foot usb extension cord which you can attach if you want added length or do not want the Usb Stick right at the back of your pc or right at the front either sticking out like a soar thumb.

Well I have an idea... I don't like the usb stick hanging outside of my pc. I actually hate it... It gets on my nerves, and is also very hard to take off at the angle it's at. Well I have 6 port usb pci card in my pc and only one of the ports is internal. I was wondering if it would be alright to put the Wi-Fi usb stick on the 1 foot usb extension cord it came with, and connect that to my internal usb pci card port. That way I can internalize the usb stick without having to ever deal with it really. I have a fully see through acrylic pc case by the way so I don't see why the signal wouldn't travel straight through. [Look at my sig/avatar for my pc case].

The reason I ask if this is alright is because I do not want to ruin any internal pc components. I have no idea if the Wi-Fi usb stick emits some sort of bad signal that can damage my hard drives, power suppy, processor, motherboard, or ram. I have no idea if it would harm anything. But if it did why would it connect directly outside of my pc case which is about the same distance? Makes no sense to me... I dunno maybe some of you know more. Personally I would just connect the Wi Fi stick to the internal usb port on my usb pci card and sit the stick down on the pc case floor. It would be close to components though of course.

    What do you all think.

More info of the Wi Fi Stick can be found here:

More then likely your case will cause lots of interference and problems.

His case is acrylic, so it should work fine.

I have have a friend with a similar case, clear plastic what not, doesn't work for him. Same idea.

    Hmm...

I'm getting a lot of mixed answers... @ "Colemanguy" was your friends pc case fully see through or just a window? Because my pc case is fully see through at every inch and every angle. By the way did he notice any harmful interference or damage to the components inside his pc? [ie: hard drive, processor, psu, etc]

Anymore replies from other would be helpful. Thank you to those that gave me their "opinions" already.

Well i wasn't clear and thinking properly. First we tried a steel case, which didn't work. Then a few months later he got a completely clear case, which didn't work either, we then removed the usb wifi, so i don't know of any lasting damage as everything appears to be working fine.

Its not going to hurt anything, so try it?

It wont hurt anything, and if it doesnt work, as Cman mentioned, its your case or your components causing problems. Any object in the way of a wireless signal, see through or not, diminishes the signal to some extent. Every electrical device puts off EMI, and there are many inside the case. There are motherboards with built in WLAN, but they have external antennas. This is probably why.

Uh, different usb devices put out different amounts of transmit power, you can't just assume 15 mW of power unless you have read the specs. Please keep information factual as possible.

    Nein,
Welcome to MajorGeeks. Your last post was removed, it was very rude. As a new member, try establishing yourself a bit, I think you will find were a good bunch and that remark was not neccesary. Your own thread says it cant cause damage, then lists scenarios where it CAN cause damage. Cant be both ways, then say your right :) Thanks buddy.

I don't know what Nein said but if it was something rude towards me I'm glad Major Additude took it off since that's unacceptable at major geeks.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm still searching the net for more info. etc... Any other replies are welcome.

If you have a signal locator thingy... forgot the name, you can try plugging it in, and then see if you get a signal. Not to mention if you have extension cord, you can probably let it hang out the side.

I've done it with as USB BlueTooth device before with no problems so I say give it a try.

Unless you are streaming video chances are your wifi will be faster than your internet connection even with some interference.

I do note this though - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Wi-Fi_USB_Connector. In Criticisms it does mention some users have complained that the USB device gets excessively hot so unless your case is well cooled you may want to keep this external in case it cooks itself.

If it were me I would use the extension. I have used USB flash/thumb drives internally without a problem, but with USB wireless connections (Ativa) I get a much better signal when it is placed on or above the desktop. Nothing ventured nothing gained though, it is worth a try. I also live with someone who hates all the wires, my sound system is at my brothers, although I did sneak in a couple of wooden cabinet Klipsh speakers. And with the multiple PC's in our house I get the wires lecture frequently.

Yes I have also noticed that recently... It gets really hot... Almost as hot as the back of a tv or monitor. Hmm I never thought about that but I touched it recently and noticed... I have supreme cooling in my pc so it may not be an issue. I have two intake fans, and two exhaust fans in my pc.
