    Hi,

Im currently running Norton Internet Security 2006 and have the option of renewing it or switching over to Sophos with Zonealarm (provided by the university I attend). Anyone got an opinion on which option would be more effective?

    Thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

We would choose the individual applications (Sophos and ZoneAlarm) over not just Norton Internet Security Suite but any Security Suite. They are all massive resource hogs and much of what they provide is not worth the impact on system performance.

When you say ZoneAlarm, do you mean just the firewall? Or is it ZoneAlarm Firewall + Antispyware. You do need to have a real time antispyware blocking tool to go along with your antivirus and firewall.

OK, thanks for the advice. The only spyware software Im running at the moment is Adaware SE Personal, and I was only planning to use the free version of Zonealarm (university subscription doesnt extend to the paid Zonealarm software). Should I be thinking about other antispy protection if I move over to the Sophos/Zonealarm firewall system?

One other question about the firewall, Ive been given the advice:
"Unfortunately, the newest version of ZoneAlarm, v6.0.667.000 has the problem that it logs every packet that it receives and in the process generates a huge number of nameserver lookups. Please use an older version, v5.5.094 for instance. " Is this still the case?

    Thanks
    JD

This does not provide any real time protection. It is only an after the fact scanner!

You need one realtime antispyware blocking tool installed. You can either buy one or use a free one. Choices are limited in free realtime blockers. Read this: How to Protect yourself from malware!

Not as far as I know but you would be better served asking that question in the software forum. However the page ( http://security.anu.edu.au/firewalls/personal-firewalls.html ) that you are referring to that has that information is two years out of date. In addition, ZoneAlarm is up to version 7.0.337.000 which you can see indicates that your info is also way out of date. The link I gave to you above also lists other free firewalls if you want one.
