Uninstalling OuterInfo Question

I am about to get started with dealing with outerinfo and possiblu vundo. I was reading over the Read First thread and noticed one of the first actions mentioned was to remove the malware with Add/Remove Programs. However, when I try to remove outerinfo it requests access to the internet to download an uninstaller (the request pops up via McAfee firewall). I didn't allow it because who knows what else may be downloaded. Any advice on how I should begin this process?

You could allow it and see if it works! Even if it does not, we can remove it manually later if it is necessary.

Thank you chaslang for your response. I will attempt it. I'm going to download everything I need including the latest versions of typical programs. No matter what happens I will eventually be back with my HJT log for you (or whoever) to anylize. You guys have helped me so much in the past. I appreciate everything you've done. If there is a way I can help or donate, tell me.

Make that all 6 logs requested. ;) HJT is the last thing we request. Without the other 5, we will not look at HJT.

Also, should I post future responses and HJT posts in this thread or a new thread? (Answer soon, please. I am starting the Read This First thread now).

Ok. 6 logs it is then. As long as that thread is recent and correct, you will get what you, and I, need. Your the best, chaslang.

P.S. - There are 11 kinds of people: Those who know binary; those who don't; and those who don't realize why they get it!

The current online copy is always current and what we want. The key is to make sure you have the versions in the download links embedded in the READ ME since the tools change. Sometimes they change daily, sometimes they change much slower.

    LOL!

I am still in the process of getting rid of malware. I ran Counterspy. It found a number of items, including Virtumonde. Spybot found Smitfraud - twice. Apparently, Counterspy does not give the option to view scan histories in Safe Mode. When I open it in Safe Mode I only have two options: Scan and Exit. After a scan (which took over 12 hours) I only have the option to see the results and then to Quarantine. I'll check to see if I can view the scan history when I boot back up in Normal Mode.

Okay if you are seeing Virtumonde, run the special procedure mentioned for it:

    Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal

Run it multiple times until it comes up clean. It will keep appending to the log each time run. You can post the final log from it when you return.

Ok. Here are the first three. CounterSpy, BitDefender, and PandaActiveScan.

Here are the next three. GetRunKeys, ShowNew, and HiJackThis. I had to change the name of the hijackthis.log to HJT.log because it said I already uploaded a hijackthis.log from a post long ago. I hope this doesn't effect anything on your end like it did on mine. Multiple .log files started opening up in Notepad (20 or so). I managed to get it under control, but I know I'm going to have to change the name back or delete this file.

And finally, here is the VundoFix log. I ran it several times until I discovered it wasn't working like it should in Safe Mode. I know the instructions didn't say run it in Safe Mode, but I thought it would be....safer! Anyway, there is a mention of older Java versions being vulnerable. I want to get rid of what I don't need, but I'm not exactly sure what to get rid of. Here is what Add/Remove Programs shows:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Also, I gave you the wrong hijackthis file. That's the old one (probably why I got the message). I don't know why I still have that one. Attached to this post is the correct one.

I'll wait for you to tell me what to do next and for the 'all clear' before I reset the Restore Point.

In step 6 of the READ ME, there were instructions to remove old Sun Java versions. Here is what you should have uninstalled:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

    Uninstall them now.

Did you change the below system policy registry settings?
Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2287C8ED-A05A-460A-8ADA-37D8F2D3BDD3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstr.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: PsapiAnalyzer Object - {320F26E1-8F10-4143-B433-B2DB14896D1F} - c:\windows\security\expxml.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E4A2F7B0-3351-4FA7-B833-57D66268BDF1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpm.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AceGain LiveUpdate] C:\Program Files\AceGain\LiveUpdate\LiveUpdate.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ApachInc] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\jrajjbyq.dll",realset
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [j1271533] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\j1271533.dll sook

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Everything seems to be working smoothly right now. As far as the Windows startup message, that was from a while back. A password is needed now. I figured I'd keep it up there just to throw off any unauthorized people. I know I should have asked you about the Java stuff when I came across that step, but I decided to wait. My bad. Anyway, here are the files you requested.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
