Humpback whales spotted offshore of our Northern Beaches this afternoon on their way North. Always a crowd drawer.

Whale watching season has already started around here. Nothing like seeing these beautiful creatures up close, particularly when the young are with their mothers.

Anyone ever experienced seeing these magnicent animals eye to eye?

    Hey Bill!

Belgium has lots to offer. It's beautiful there.

Haven't seen Killer Whales - fabulous looking creatures.

So cool out on the boat with the Humpbacks in the waters. Last time up North during full season, the females were pushing their young to the surface as if to show them off. The juvenile males were cheeky little buggers by going under the boat then nudging it. It was a game for them, and a thrill for us to see them so close.

The older whales kept their distance, many scared. Given our shameful past whale hunting history (now prohibited) it was as if they were still wary.

it has to be said i live in a really beautiful city maybe sometimes we take it for granted it is now just beginning the tourist season so we do not go into the city very much from now until October when the tourist(ripoff) prices finish.

the building that you can just see the roof of at the top of the page is our newest white elephant,it's the concert hall it cost millions and took 2 years to build and then all the tiles had to be taken off because they were the wrong colour(unbelievable) but we have some houses and official buildings that go back to the 1300s. http://www.smileyhut.com/medieval/medieval_rune.gif

How lovely Bill. Thanks for the glimpse. Brugge is so picturesque. When I was last in Belgium for 3 days I was so exhausted that any spare time I had was spent sleeping, so missed a lot :banghead.

Well, at least we have our Humpbacks to enjoy while you have that fabulous historical city and Killer Whales.:)

Those are awsome animals to watch. I used to watch the whale migrations from on top of Point Loma in San Diego. They have a powerful and gentle presence. I even got to see a few closer up out at sea, while in the Navy. I also used to love to watch the dolphins play in our bow wake. They are such comedians.

Not that long ago. In 1978 the last whaling station in Australia closed down.
Now its one of the major (and the smelliest) tourist attractions in my home town.

Still good to have that type of historical reminder for our youth...tempers their spirits towards protecting these intelligent creatures.

At least it's bringing in tourist money!LOL

On occasion we've had strandings of whales and dolphins on Australia's beaches - amazing watching rescuers at work. I know there are occurrences overseas as well.

i love watching the whales play. i am so blessed to live in a place where this is the 'TV' during the winter months. i really miss them when they go to wherever they go. they come so close to the shore line here. our waters are real deep, real quick. and they do show off!! we have a whole variety here...i am not sure what kind they all are. they dont all disappear in the summer either, but those that dont must stay further out. magnificent creatures.

Completely off topic, but while searching for Mingelou (the white whale--don't know how it is spelt), I came across http://www.yellowpageschina.com/33883/1
Chinese Yellow pages directory. Old joke: More Chins than a dozen health farms. :D

Mingelou (however it's spelt) has become his own tourist attraction.
He wont last long if whaling (sorry research) is resumed.:(

    @LS@
You've gotta stop burning the early morning oil, and spend more time down at those Northern beaches. ;) Bazza

Here's a link showing Hervey Bay (Queensland) where I last went whale watching...pictures show how close they get to the boats. Absolutely thrilling!

:(I've never had the chance to get to any oceans, and I live in the middle of the USA, so unless someone decides to dump one out in a lake somewhere, (Which, really, I hope that actually doesn't happen; If someone does do that, they need to be shot:guns) I'm not gonna see one for quite a while, if ever.:(
I've always wanted to go to Australia, LEGALSUIT, BIGBAZZA, and SHANEMAIL, and that's one of the reasons why, actuallly. To basically see the beautiful scenery and wildlife ya'll have down there, from the coral reefs to the Outback, and seeing whales out in the open ocean would just be awesome. I mean, it gets boring seeing the same thing every day, which around here, it's whitetail deer, turkeys, billions of squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, possums, and the neighbor's cats and dogs. Of course, some of the animals you have down there, I'm sure you feel the same way, since you live there.;)

Two Humpback whales were frolicking in our Sydney Harbour today (when most people were still at work:(),

Apparently they put on quite a show with leaps, water spouting, synchronised flip waving and the classic tail flaps (considered good luck when sighted). Those lucky enough to be on the water had a fantastic close up of this spectacular sight. *sigh*
