I am having some problems with malware, including but not necessarily limited to Vundo.

I have diligently followed all of the instructions in the "READ AND RUN ME FIRST" thread, and I found that information quite useful. However, I was unable to attain log files from certain scans.

I have the following log files:

    activescan
    bdscan
    runkeys
    newfiles
    hijackthis

I also proceeded ran the specialized Vundo removal tool referenced in the "READ ME AND RUN ME FIRST" thread. This tool found and removed 3 dll files, but in one of the scans (Panda I believe, as it was near the end of procedure), it returned 7 incidences of spyware and 2 of hacking tools/rootkits. My apologies if the terminology is off.

I will attach all of my log files and very much look forward to receiving help from a knowledgeable person.

I ran another McAfee AV scan, and it returned 4 additional infections in the C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E1A59FB4-BB67-4D10-B4FE-07A7D6363E61}\RE597 (and RP598) folders. Three dll files and one exe file. I cannot access the folder through Windows Explorer. McAfee was able to delete these 4 files, but I'm not sure if they are recurrent.

I'm assuming this is has to do with System Restore, to re-infect upon a System Restore.

I look forward to your help!

EDIT! Following a reboot, I get a RUNDLL message saying that system32\vfuclnxb.dll could not be found. That, I believe, was deleted with the special Vundo fix tool. A second McAfee scan says I'm infection free. Is this popup from a registry key that's still hanging around?

Not infection free - I'm still getting popups in IE (using Firefox).

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Also Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_01
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_05

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Continue by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    jkkiihg.dll
    mljge.dll
    pmxyismj.dll
    vfuclnxb.dll
    wffnnoxe.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    jkkiihg.dll
    mljge.dll
    pmxyismj.dll
    vfuclnxb.dll
    wffnnoxe.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    jkkiihg.dll
    mljge.dll
    pmxyismj.dll
    vfuclnxb.dll
    wffnnoxe.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {08C134D3-087C-4139-A98C-3A078358DFDE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkiihg.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {92A444D2-F945-4dd9-89A1-896A6C2D8D22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmxyismj.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{ZN}] C:\Documents and Settings\khopson\Local Settings\Temp\TICHD003.exe CHD003
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ApachInc] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vfuclnxb.dll",realset
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljge - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljge.dll (file missing)
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I very much appreciate your reply.

I'm away from that computer at the moment, but I tried uninstalling the older versions of Java earlier and it would not let me. It said something to the effect of not being able to find ikernel.exe for both of those applications and would not let me uninstall it. What might I do now?

I thank you again for your prompt and thorough reply.

Cannot install new Java (different machine)

I'm working my way through the READ AND RUN ME FIRST section. I uninstalled an old version of Java and was trying to install the new version, and I received a Windows Installer error - "The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."

I was on my personal name (with admin rights) and then switched to the admin account (both while in safe mode) and was still unable to install the newest version of Java.

    What can I do?

Re: Cannot install new Java (different machine)

Please remain in one thread for your current problems!

Just continue on with the rest of the steps and attach the new logs requested when you finish.

Afterwards you can then retry uninstalling the old Java versions and then install the current version.

I'm having problems with Java on two separate machines, I figured two threads would be more beneficial so as to avoid confusion. My apologies.

I won't be able to get to my first machine for a few days. However my second machine (the one for which I started the new thread, and has System Admin issues for Java, despite having admin access), will let me install the new Java outside of safe mode. I'm assuming this needs to be done, and will not be problematic since it is coming from a safe source?

Yes this would be better but it was not really clear (even though you said two machines) as to which PC you were working on. It just looked like a second message about the same PC. It would be a better idea right now to focus on one PC at a time to avoid any confusion for us or for you. And yes we will work each in a separate thread. However just to give quick answer, yes install Java from Normal boot mode.

Chaslang, again thanks for all of your help.

I was able to re-format one of the machines without losing any data. However, I still have my original problem on the other machine.

There are two older versions of Java on this machine, but I am unable to remove either of them. They both give error messages about not being able to find ikernel.exe and uninstallation cannot continue. What can I do about this?

The last thing you mentioned about ikernel.exe is not an issue for this forum. It is part of Installshield which may have been used to install those old versions of Java. You need to get past focusing on Java now and run the malware removal steps which are more important.

Thank you yet again for your help, it is truly appreciated.

Process Explorer did not turn up anything on the list of files that you gave me. HijackThis came up with several hits and I was able to clean them accordingly and save the log.

Avenger was able to clean a few things, and did in fact save a log at C:\avenger.txt, but after the reboot, it disappeared. I subsequently tried to run Avenger again, but there was nothing for it to clean.

Attached please find the 3 logs that I was able to save.

You did not tell me how things are working.

Since your logs are clean, I will assume you are not having any problems.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I wanted to "test drive" it first before saying that things were 100% clean. I haven't had any of my Google searches hijacked or other strange popup garbage. It seems a tick faster now than when I knew it to be infected, which helped seal the deal for me.

Thanks a final time for all of your help. It has been greatly appreciated.
