    Dear Malware Special Ops,

Please help. I've worked through the Malware removal steps without kills. Used AVG Antispyware but don't remember where i put the text file. any suggestions of the default location it would ask to be placed?

other than forgetting that file's location, i followed all the steps as written, but the mal-enemy is winning.

A new college grad installed a few 'upgrades' on my computer and it came with a price. Can you find the waldos, i mean, maldos, in any of the attached files? Thank you in advance for looking...
will send part two of attachments next.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

It is where ever you put it and it is named whatever you named it. You need to keep track of what you do.

Run this Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal and do not attach the requested log right away. Run it multiple times until it comes up clean and then attach the final log.

Now attach the below new logs

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
    4. Don't forget the VundoFix log
We will have more to do so don't expect things to be perfect yet! ;)

    Dear Chaslang,
Thank you for your clear instructions. I feel that there is some hope at the end of my malaligned laptop tunnel, which i feared going through!

I ran the VundoFix until it came up clean. Its attached here along with two others i ran afterwards. I'll send a new hijack log as well, in the next message.

Much appreciative. Actually, its nice to be able to do this myself instead of chickening out and giving it to others to do.

    Your advise is MUCH appreciated.

    You're welcome!

Now let's continue by removing a malware service.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to CRHE
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service. If already Stopped, just continue.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'. If already Disabled, just continue.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteCRHE into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Now re-run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {017824A4-1EF8-45FB-8277-A2A6ABC32C7F} - (no file)

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljgg - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljgg.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    almost, chaslang!!!!

Done as suggested up to the avenger reboot. i'm stuck right now. After avenger rebooted my PC, a window, c:\windows/system32\cmd.exe

The system cannot find the file specified.
    could not find: c:\avenger\*.reg
    1 file(s) copied.
zip warning: c:/backup.zip not found or empty
    adding: avenger/26.tmp (188 bytes security) (deflated 66%)
    adding: avenger/avenger.txt (188 bytes security) (deflated 79%)
    adding: avenger/backup.reg (188 bytes security) (stored 0%)
    adding: avenger/ggjlm.bak1 (124 bytes security) (deflated 70%)
    adding: avenger/ggjlm.bak2 (124 bytes security) (deflated 46%)
    adding: avenger/ggjlm.ini (124 bytes security) (deflated 47%)
    adding: avenger/qtutv.ini (124 bytes security) (deflated 33%)

another window, labele "Windows - No Disk"
    has a RED 3d bullet with a white x in it, with "Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf9c 4 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c"

and three buttons: Cancel Try Again Continue

    what do i do now?

my computer restore button was off. did that cause some pain?

I'll keep my windows = no disk error message open until further notice.

thank you thank you thank you,
    azumi

You are not following directions properly! The fixme.reg patch has nothing to do with Avenger! The Avenger procedure is totally separate and you are not doing what the directions say to do. That is unless I'm not reading what you posted properly??

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

I think I did read your message wrong! I also think the problem may have been due to the fact that the C:\26.tmp file was almost 1.5 Gigabytes in size. Avenger probably could not compress it into a backup.zip file.

Does the C:\26.tmp file still exist?

    Does the c:\avenger.txt log exist?

hi chaslang. i followed your good directions to the T and after completing the avenger instructions, the pc rebooted, and a cmd.exe window is open. another window, with light blue top and grey body, with the title 'windows - no disk' and the exception notice described above. its waiting for my decision on clicking:
    cancel
    try again
    continue

i did everything as described, read it over three times before doing anything, afterwards and now again, retraced mentally what i did and all things check. i just don't know what to do with the windows no disk message. do i ignore it and proceed to ccleaner? thank you for your patience.

please advise if you have time,

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Dear Chaslang,

Thank you for all your help. I have performed steps 1-9 and started on step 10. The first point of step 10 is to update windows, which i cannot perform.

I use firefox, and went to the update windows page, which loaded fine, and it says to update using ie. i opened i.e. and its default page was set a google, but it attempts to load 72.14.253.99 and never completes. i then stopped the loading of that site, and hit home, which would go to google. but it won't load. neither will anything else load in i.e. so, i am unable to update windows.

i downloaded, updated a-squared free and ran a quick scan last night, which was not that quick. it had detected 8 objects and was still running before i fell asleep. when i looked at the results this morning, the software had quit and there was nothing in quarantine and nothing in a file called infected.txt. it had detected something called trace.directory.spysubstract in c:\program files\intermute spysubtract.

i started a deep scan this morning and it found that same item immediately and a few others that were in the first scan. unfortunately, upon the restart of the software, the infected.txt file disappeared.

l leave the scan running today and hope it will stay put until i return later today.

any additional suggestions will be taken and implemented.

finally, chaslang, i do appreciate all your efforts to help me out. is there anyone i can write to, to tell them what an excellent job you did, or where or to whom, majorgeeks?, i can send a small donation for your assistance?

you're the best and you made my self esteem go up regarding fixing my laptop. a venture which i thought i could never accomplish.

As stated in many threads in this forum and in the Software Forum, you must use IE to get updates from Microsoft. And even then there are dozens of issues with Microsoft Update. Those are topics for the Software Forum.

SpySubtract is not malware. It is a valid antispyware program that you may have had installed at some time. There could be traces of it leftover in your registry and file system. This happens just about for any program ever installed and then uninstalled. Most if not all uninstalls are totally incomplete.

thanks chaslang for the email info where i can send a good word for your excellent advise and assistance, for the link and software forum tip regarding i.e..

i've hardly ever ventured outside malware... unaware there are other worlds! :)

i mentioned the ie issue because i.e. worked fine before cleaning up my pc of malware. i can't upgrade squat.

i ran into another immediate problem; the deep a squared scan ended, found 9 items which were deleted.

followed by an ad-aware scan, which midway, a blue screen popped up stating:

windows shutting down because file: ati2dvag
device drives in infinite loop because problem with device itself or with the device programing hardware incorrectly ... hardware driver updates.
    ...
ati2dvag beginning dump of physical memory

i turned my pc off, writing from a borrowed machine. did i delete/something important but reversible during my malware special ops session? i never saw this screen before.

is this the kind of thing to present at the software forum as well?

newbie azumi still in boot camp.

You may find the other forums to be quite helpful. Especially for your issues with your ATI drivers mentioned below. This may be a subject for the Hardware Forum.

Please clarify what you mean. Does IE work at all? Are you only saying you cannot update Windows software from Microsoft or are you referring to other software.

I repeat, SpySubtract is not malware.

Not while performing any instructions that I gave to you. All you did was remove a Vundo infection and some other unnecessary items which have nothing to do with your video card. Perhaps you are having overheating problems. Is this a laptop? Searching Google for ati2dvag.dll - infinite loop problem will bring up a lot of hits. I don't have time to read thru all of these but it seems you are not the only person to have seen this issue. You probably should post a question in the Hardware Forum and also start reading some of the links from hits on Google. You may not find a real solution for the problem and should proceed with caution. You cannot always believe everything you read on the web and your hardware could be different that other's that have a similar error message. I did see a load of references to a fix by changing to PCI-to-PCI bridge like mentioned here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic15393.html This is not something that I can say will resolve your problems. This is why I say the Hardware Forum would be a better place to work the issue.

You should check it your PC runs from safe mode?
Also does it work at all from normal boot mode? DO NOT RUN ANYMORE SCANS which could cause issues if your problems are related to heat.

I also have to question what you allowed someone to do to your PC. You made the below statement in your first message:
    Exactly what does this mean?

As stated above, for you ati2dvag problem, the Hardware Forum would be more appropriate but if you do not get any help there, you could try the Software Forum. You should make sure that you indicate what kind of PC you have, the manufacturer, the video card model and the video card driver versions.
