Need to UN-format a pc that has stuff on it

my dad is a cpa and has 3 years of tax data lost due to my mom's stupidity and disrespect for other peoples things. she formatted his harddrive and put windows on it. i need utility software that can allow me to at least access the old data so that i can move it to a new harddrive. i understand that with things being installed afterward that there is a good chance it's been overwritten, but i have to try...its my dad's livlihood at stake.

 

even better news, i just realised my moms an idiot and put windows on a seperate partition. how do i access the old partition from an external usb enclosure?

I could say it is more idiotic to have such vital information on a computer without backing it up!

It sounds ultimately like your mistake, not your moms.

If you put the drive in an external USB enclosure it should show as two drives (first partition and second partition) in windows explorer, just click on "My Computer" and it should show up. Once you have accessed the partition you should be able to coppy the files that you need over to another drive.
