Defeat/workaround of network content filters?

My network at work has an overly restrictive content filter to block access to unwanted web sites (porn, youtube, etc.) that the powers that be deem inappropriate or likely to be time wasters while at work. I'm shocked that this site could be accessed. Is there an easy way to defeat this or workaround it either permanently or temporarily that's not likely to cause harm to the secure network or be detected and defetaed by corporate "big brother"? I have no knowledge of these things or how they work so I'd need something simple and user friendly. Thanks.

I don't think we can help you on this one. You'll have to speak with the network administrators to lift restrictions on legitimate sites.

I've never had any problem in getting them to grant me access to "legitimate" sites that I need access to for work. The frustration sets in during night/weekend hours when they aren't available or when I want to go to a site that I can't justify accessing at work (i.e. youtube etc.) that are not really work related... like this one if it were blocked.

Well, the fact remains that we're not supposed to aid users in defeating security setups. Maybe this is an exception, I've asked for moderator approval.

If they deem those sites to be blocked then that is upto them, if you think you need to view these sites then you need to ask them if they will relax your access to them on a per user account basis, I would hazard a guess they will say no to the likes of YouTube etc as its a waste of companies bandwidth, they are paying for it after all and as well they are also paying you to work in work hours ( be that on your breaks or in time of slowness ) if the company has these blocks in place you can also bet they also have logs that will list your viewing on the network, so have to ask is it worth loosing your job over in trying to circumvent these restrictions?

I know this has happened where I work as they had large crackdown on not just websites visted, but what you have stored on your PC, be that local or network drives, plus emails, 5 were sacked for sending potential racist jokes around, and no these jokes were not ethnic based either.

I wasn't aware that it was against the rules here, my bad for even asking. I can find out elsewhere. Thanks.

I don't need the access, I just want it. I work on my notebook while connected to our network via VPN all the time on MY time, not the company's time on weekends and nights while I'm traveling on business. It's not that big a deal, I can log off of VPN and access whatever I want to when I'm not at the office, I just choose to stay connected so I can get work done as well while I bump around the web. I'll just have to access only sites deemed "work safe" while at the office until I find another solution. Maybe I should befriend one of the network administrator IT geeks........:p

I would be careful in trying to "defeat" the companies securities. Alot of things are considered when applying these restrictions. If you were to just take 15 minutes a day to "bump around the web" and translate that into a years time maybe you can see why this is frowned upon. Abuse of company time is widely considered as stealing. Certainly to be followed up by termination.

Also that IT geek may be contractually obligated to report such solicitation.
