Serious RAM power... 3Gb!

At the moment I have 1Gb of RAM in the home PC. I've kind of tossed around the idea of upgrading to 2Gb then read somewhere about PCs with 3Gb of RAM. Holy crap! Talk about RAM power.

I use the home PC for MS Office, emailing, surfing the internet, downloading songs and mpegs, all the usual stuff. However, I also use Photoshop, Videoredo, DVD Shrink and other video editing software a fair bit.

So what da'ya reckn'... does my PC usage justify an upgrade to 3Gb... guess I'm after a reason to spend money and get it!!!:D

What would you expect a PC with 3Gb of RAM to do quicker then a PC with 1Gb of RAM?

What are some of your other specs? The money may be better spent elsewhere: like add just 1gb RAM and get a bigger hard drive (or external), maybe a better video card, new 20x DVDRW w/ lightscribe? Or maybe everything is cool, and the 3gb is the way to go.... post some other specs and we'll try to advise....

I have 3gb and it doesn't do anything more than 2gb would. Most servers only have only 2gb. Got an extra gig for free so decided to put it in, otherwise i wouldn't have wasted my time.

What about transcoding videofiles. I guess that would apply.

EDIT: Hehe, answered my own question.:D

OK will do. But have to do it tomorrow because the PC is at work, I'm in the process of cleaning it out and reinstalling XP (what a HUGE pain in the a..!).

I've been having some serious issues with it lately, crashing randomly, freezing up and not being to turn it off. I tried the Malware help on this forum but that didn't fix it so I sent it into a PC repair place... $50 later and still no change.

Sorry.. I'm starting to motor on.:zzz

BTW, what is a lightscribe? Don't know why I'm itching to spend money on this bomb.

Will post again tomorrow with more specs.

Lightscribe allows you to burn an image on the top of disks. You need the lightscribe disks which are more expensive.

Yeah- LightScribe is a way to burn 'labels' directly on the DVD. You just get shades of black and grey, but it's pretty cool. More of a luxury than a necessity....

My PC is used for most of the stuff that you use.

And I have similiar specs for my PC. I have a Nvidia 128MB video card with 2Gigs of RAM. I've monitored my Memory usage and I believe I have never even came close to using 1Gig. Even after playing some games.....can't remember which games though. confused:)

Instead of adding 2gb RAM, personally, I'd add 1gb of RAM and invest in a good video card: like an ATI X1650 512mb. It's a great card for the price and it will definitely help when you do anything video or graphic intensive like gaming or video editing and the like....

Lucky I checked this thread or I would have thought no one is replying anymore to it. I was under the impression that once you subscribe with 'instant email notification' that any replies would be emailed to my email address. I didn't receive notice of the last two replies. Anyway...

By the sounds (advice) of it. Think I may spend the money somewhere else instead on the RAM. Maybe a new monitor, love the looks of the 22" widescreens... they're SWEET looking!!!:D Or a new graphics card like the one mentioned in the last reply.

Actually, does anyone use a HDTV card to record stuff onto the PC then burn to watch on a 'lounge room' DVD player? Maybe I'll get one of those. This is one of the reasons I was after more RAM in the start of this thread. I download shows from the set top box in the lounge onto my pc then edit ads out and burn onto a dvd disc.
