i have a seagate 500gb 300speed hd as a primary. my old primary was an older model 250gb 150speed and does not support the 300speed. the 300speed came with a jumper to reduce its speed to 150 but i dont want to use it.

so i guess my question is; if i plug the 150speed into my second raid slot will it mess up my clock speeds if im not using it for anything other than data backup/transfer, or will i have to go buy an external enclosure to bypass the actuall sata plugin and convert it to usb2.0

Check your motherboard support - if it only supports 150, it will only run 150.

that wasnt even related to my question.

Perhaps I misunderstood your question, my apologies.:(
If the origainal hard drive, was only 1.5GB p/sec,(sata 1) then I was saying , will your motherboard support the 3GB p/sec for SATA II.
If it does not ,then the rest was not relative, ---but if it does then, I am sure you will find it will not affect the speed of the sata 1 drive, when using it for data.

Although I have found some motherboards will run with the jumper in sata 11 position, when the manual say it will not run sata 11, I have found it is o.k to connect in both modes, but it appeared to run in sata 1 (1.50Gb/sec.) from the sata plugin/connection.
