DRINK AND DRIVE DON'T DO IT

hi guys n gals over a period of time i have looked at a number of forums but now have decided to stop and settle here some of the others will insult and ridicule members who have less geek sense than they(sometimes ADRYN can be a bit acerbic but he obviously does not suffer fools)SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRY ADRYN, that's me in the :crap for a while.
there are some members who post just to get the numbers up it seems having some sort of rank under the avatar is important, they know who they are and i do not wish to upset them but as they say IF THE CAP FITS WEAR IT i do tend to speak out somtimes, having said that there are a lot of very clever and astute members here who Know what they are talking about 2or 3 spring directly to mind no names to spare the blushes and comic retorts from others, some are very open and allow us to learn something about them CALLTAKER came directly to my thoughts as for all the rest who just like me enjoy spending time discussing topics of interest i salute you all MAJOR A and CORPORAL P did you have any idea of the successful tool you built.

so to the story, a long time ago (1965) this young guy left high school and joined the military he served long and with honour visiting many lands, doing disagreeable jobs but making many friends along the way.
he married and had a daughter who was his life.

when the time came to end his service he left with a good rank an honorable discharge and a large lump of cash.

with the money he bought a second(or third or fourth) hand truck he worked all the hours available and some that were not in time he had enough to buy a new truck, this went on over a number of years until he was the proud owner of ten rigs.

he considered himself to be a success and enjoyed the life wealth brings, JAGUAR and HONDA GOLD WING for him a LEXUS for her, they often would eat out with friends and attend numerous functions where alcohol was freely available.

at no time did he think that he was becoming dependent on alcohol even when he looked forward so much to that first drink of the day, he never let it effect his work(so he thought) he was always in the office on time and very often left late having had a couple of large whiskys, others began to see it but he always put it down to having to work so hard to support their lifestyle what a lame excuse (YOUR A LONG TIME DEAD)

the time arrived that they were due to attend a function he had to wait in the office for some papers to be delivered but said he would come direct from work(you can wear a suit on a Gold Wing) he arrived at about 9.30 and soon got into the party mood at around 02.30 it was time to leave, his wife had been drinking lightly and offered to drive them home he said he could not leave his GOLDIE as it may be stolen.

not too far from the family home an accident occurred and tragically the other driver did not survive, he spent a long time in hospital.
when he came out he was facing criminal and civil charges (and to any of you d***HEADS WHO DRIVE AFTER DRINK YOU HAVE NO INSURANCE) the charges ruined his business, his family and his life.

the shame he has to bear thinking of a family out there without a father/brother/son is impossible to put into words, so next time you say one more for the road think well on the comments here and remember IT COULD BE YOU.

as some of you know i am at this moment in hospital recovering from surgery an have seen some seriously damaged people coming in here after auto accidents many caused by drink, i try not to be a hypocrite and deny pleasure to those who enjoy a drink (i do not drink at all) what i am saying is remember you could kill someone else with your stupidity.

as for the man in the story you can not judge him harder than he judged himself and he must live with it.

I hope i have not offended to many folk it is just me in my drug induced state ranting on but this is what i think should be the punishment for drink drivers.

Bill, I hope your story hits home to those who can avoid such unnecessary tragedy and ongoing suffering. Overseas friends consider our driving policies and police as "Gestapos" due to the severe penalties for the same offence you speak of. If your story opens the eyes of at least one, then your sharing has not been wasted.

Thank you for putting the time and effort to record this for those who need to understand the effects of such senseless stupidity as drink driving.

*Now get off the #@!% computer and rest up! We need you to come back strong and healthy to amuse us with your posts!*

    And get well real soon!

bless you bill. we all fail, all the time. we have all made some bitching mistakes and some have learned from them. every day is a brand new start to this game. which is fortunate, coz the game has no rules, or to be more precise the rules can change at a moments notice. (i am reminded of nelson's 'the point' "a point in every direction is the some as no point at all"). i try to live my day to the benefit of those around me. sometimes i even succeed. i feel from your writings that you do the same. to say that you would not be the man you are now without those experiences is trite, and undervalues the trauma we can suffer. what i do know is that those that find themselves still standing get to have another go. my aloha to you.

Fully understand mate - if I'm going out and know I'm driving back I won't touch alcohol. Just a habit I've got into and will always stick with, not only because I'm inexperienced when compared to other people (like my parents) but because I want 100% control of the car.

It is not until someone is injured/killed (through drink-driving) and you know that person; then you sit up and take notice. Commonly, in my opinion, you think that 'it will never happen to me', so take your chances.
Incidents involving drink-driving happen every day all over the world and have been happening for many decades.
Maybe time for changes in the law and very severe punishment for the guilty ones.

Please forgive me for resurrecting this thread but it saves me having to explain the story to those members who missed it please read post 1#

things have finally come to a head this morning i received an official notification that the criminal proceeding are at an end and my fate has been decided.

i have to pay 450,000$ as final settlement and 3 months in jail so it looks like i will have christmas behind bars,my lawyers are trying to get the prison term suspended but are not hopeful.

this is not a plea for sympathy but posted as a warning to those who drink and drive i am definitely not proud of myself.

under normal circumstances i would not divulge this information as it is not a thing you tell everybody but let it serve as an illustration of the consequences of drink driving!!!!

no one on here can judge me harder than i have judged myself and if this post makes just 1 of you guys n gals think before you drink then it worth the shame and humiliation i must bear.

    Such proceedings take time.

I know of your circumstances and am so sorry of what may come about. I just hope your lawyers can put forward a good enough plea for your case to take into consideration your current physical situation. From your information, I can only guess that judgment is following the letter of the law as it applies in your country/State.

You are to be admired for putting forward your story, it takes intestinal fortitude. Hopefully, at least one reader with any potential of falling into the same situation will take heed. So I sincerely thank you for that.

Take care and what cheer I can offer you my friend. My thoughts and prayers for a better and more viable outcome are with you my bionic friend.

Thanks for having the courage to share that message, Bill. Having lost my mother at five, and my wife disabled for life due to drunks on the road, I can confirm your message - I won't go into details here.

Take care Bill, and remember we'll be thinking of you and be here when you get back. I don't know what personal spiritual/psychological beliefs you have, but no one can take that strength from you.

As said, it may not come to the worst, but we'll look forward to seeing you post when you can.

    Amen.

Take care of yourself, and come back after. You will be missed while you're gone.

I was lucky, I got through several years where I drank and drove very regular. Alcoholism runs in my family, and I could see where I was heading, so I stopped. I'm not a teatotaller, but I usually only drink maybe once a year, and stop at one. I keep it completely social.

Bill...thank you for sharing such personal stuff. I feel you have relived this so many times already and not knowing your punishment to come has probably been a greater punsihment in itself than what you are about to go through now. You so obviously have huge regrets and remorse - some don't. Some continue to drink drive. Tose are the really terrible mistakes - the ones you do not learn from. Each has their cross to bear, each different - some heavier than others. I wish you the best in facing your burden and look forward to you coming back here soon :)

Everyone has done something to hurt, if not others then themselves, A lot of us are locked away in a space of grief if only in our minds. You must have been going through pure hell due to guilt. Hopefully the courts will take into consideration your suffering and be lenient. I am so sorry you have to go through this in addition to your pain and suffering. I will be saying a prayer for you and your family, there is a purpose here somewhere. God Bless

Like LauraR, there is nothing I can add that has not been said better by others in this thread.

There isn't a soul on this earth that hasn't done something they are ashamed of, and I admire your honesty and courage in sharing this with us.

Good luck, and if turns out you must spend some time away from us just know we'll leave the porch light on in anticipation of your speedy return.

When I was seventeen, every Friday night all summer a girl and I would drive around in my car and split a micky of vodka. We didn't think anything of it. Over and above that there was many other times, up until I was about twenty. This was the mid seventies. My friends and I are fortunate we didn't kill anyone. Sheer good luck, I'm sure.
Good luck Bill. Times will get better for you again.
