I have a few sigtags that I use in my Incredimail program & I need to change them from GIF extension to a JPG.What is the correct way of doing this? These tags are images that have my name on them & I can't use them in a storage bucket without them being a jpg file. Thanks for your help.

Open them up in MS Paint, file > save as > change the file type to JPEG.

If you have "Hide extensions for known file types" in Control Panel, Folder Options, View, unchecked so that Windows shows file extensions you can right click on the .bmp, choose rename, and change the file extension from .bmp to .jpg or vise versa. Funny I would never have done it except for reading your thread. Have only done it with .txt files and it worked there, I have always opened Paint, but not anymore.

Do you mean like Photobucket ? They allow .gif files.

I've used Paint as well for changing extensions. But then I read the next thread and decided to try this other way via control panel, but found a problem. Is it just me? lol

I tried this way, using uncheck in "Hide extensions for known file types" in Control Panel, but I get a message (see below) when I tried to convert from .gif to .jpg ?

Changing the file extension won't change the format (type) of the files. In some cases you'll get away with it but not in all. If you pick the wrong program to open it with, it will tell you that the file can't be opened. You can call a horse a cat if you like, but don't expect it to fit in your lap! :)

To change the file extension, you need to change the type of the file by using a program that can handle the current file type and the one you need.

(By the way, changing an animated gif to jpg means losing the animation - jpg can't do animation but they can do a better quality picture than gif using a smaller file size. You can test this by creating a bitmap picture in Paint and saving it, then using File - Save As to make a gif and a jpg from the bitmap file (Save as File Type). Reopen the bitmap version of the picture before saving in the other format then open them directly from the folder you put them in and you'll see the quality difference.)

If you have a lot of pictures to convert from gif to jpg, you would be much better off using a program that can do this quickly. Irfanview is free and an excellent program and can do this. After installing and opening it, you choose File - Batch Conversion and then poke around the screen you get and in the Advanced and Options sections to get a feel for what you can do - just make sure you note the settings before changing any and remember that they will be set exactly how you left them when you close and then next open Irfanview. The settings don't revert to a default between uses of the program. Also, use copies of pictures in a folder specially created for them while you learn the ropes or you may accidentally overwrite an original and still wanted file.

If you only have a small number, Paint would be quicker and easier than installing and learning a new program but I still think Irfanview is a "must have" program.

lol! Windows always warns you of this for very good reason - it's true! However, sometimes you ignore it because you know the reason for changing the extension is a good one, such as renaming something to file.old when troubleshooting or a malware expert said to.

See my previous post - I think it gives you all the explanation you need.

Thanks to All......I have the Irfanview & I've used it to resize photos so I never thought of using it to change file names. The Paint sounds as if its easier so I'll try that first.....These tags are not animated. When I go to the PhotoBucket to add my Photos all that show up in my folders to choose from are the ones with .jpg.All the others show up with no Picture on them so I choose just the one with a picture on them. They are the .jpg ones.
    Thanks again........
