    Hi everyone,

My computer is starting up much slower than usual lately, so I came here and completed the "READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide." My computer still seems to be running slowly so I'm wondering if you guys can check it out.

I have an HP Pavilion DV9000 laptop which was purchased only a few months ago. I have Norton Antivirus running and my OS is Windows XP Media Center SP2.

Unfortunately I'm not very good with computers so I wasn't able to get ALL of the log files; partly due to frustration, but mostly I wasn't sure how to do so on some programs.

    What I do have is my HijackThis.txt , ActiveScan.txt , RunKeys.txt and NewFiles.txt logs.

I'm going to go ahead and attach them and hope I've done everything right  If you need anything else I'd be more than happy to get it for you.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

As stated at the top of the READ ME, it is not a cure all for slow PC issues. Most PCs are slowed down due to what the end user installs and runs. Especially when you allow unnecessary items to load at startup. I will give you a few things to do and also make some suggestions at the end but your problems are not due to malware.

Uninstall the below old versions of software as requested in step 6 of the READ ME:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Also uninstall CounterSpy now since we are finished with it.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Reminder] C:\Windows\CREATOR\Remind_XP.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

After clicking Fix checked, exit HijackThis.

    Now reboot in normal mode

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

If you PC is still to slow for your like consider the below:
    1. Norton Internet Security is a big resource hog. There are free alternatives that will not kill your PCs performance
    2. Ad-Aware 2007 has a service that runs and cannot be stop. It is a massive resource hog. Until the fix this, I don't recommend using Ad-Aware 2007. It is too large a price to pay for a scan only function especially when their detection and removal percentages are not too good.
You should also look at the below link which was given at the top of the READ ME after stating slow PCs are rarely due to malware:

Basic computer maintenance everyone should do

Well that helped part of my issue so thank you. I'm also concerned because my network seems to be the last thing to startup. Lately it loads a couple minutes after everything else. Before all this started happening my computer would be completely loaded and ready to go just 20 seconds after the welcome page cleared. Any ideas?

Here's what you asked for and thanks again

Already stated in the first paragraph and in the last section of my previous message (especially Norton). Also why do you need this: O23 - Service: Vongo Service - Starz Entertainment Group LLC - C:\Program Files\Vongo\VongoService.exe

You can also have HJT fix the below which is not necessary to load at startup.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe

Any remaining issues you have are not topics for this forum. You must realize that ALL protection software installed will have to hook in to your Windows OS as the PC boots up and this will slow down boot up. This is normal.
