It's bad enough most of their parts are made in Japan & Mexico, next they will be built there

Maybe they will make a bike that will run smooth and quiet, no need for you to bring the bucket along to pick up the parts that fell off

Are you refering to the AMC fiasco? That was early 70's, before the HD employees retook the company.

And as far as Harleys being loud or unreliable, that is up to the rider. If you take off the stock exhaust, of course it will be loud... duh huh. Same goes for maintenance and upkeep. If you beat the crap out of any machine and don't maintain it, of course it will break down. I had a friend with a '49 Panhead that always ran fine, no breakdowns or anything. That is until his buddy who owned a shop talked him into a massive rebuild. It never ran right after that. Not Harley's fault, but due to a dipstick modifying it with after market parts.

Harleys are just as reliable as any other machine, provided you have common sense.

Maybe, that has something to do with it.
Harleys, retain, or increase in value through the years.....THAT says it all.

 

I believe AMF, the bowling alley manufacturer, bought Harley in the 80's, and the company had troubles. Then the family got it back. The Honda I own had Honda sued by Harley, almost every one who sees it thinks it is a Harley. I bought a Honda due to lower maintenance costs, the same reason I still own and drive an 11 year old Saturn. If the deal does go through there will be strings attached, and you can believe that Harley Davidson Motorcycles will still be manufactured in the US of A. The way the global economy is today a majority holder of stock in a company usually has the say in how the company is run, so watch out for the Chinese, our trade imbalance with them is staggering, although their reputation has been tarnished recently over tainted food stuffs, and just recently poorly manufactured automotive tires.

Nooo... not the bowling ball people, American Machine and Foundry. And it was indeed the 70's. The sweetest bike to come out of that crapfest, was the Nighttrain, and maybe even the XL1000.

Yes AMF. I thought it was the early 80s. I was pretty young in the 70s but do remember all of the Harley dealerships having problems with store fronts being defaced. Signs being destroyed by rocks/bullets.
I am sure the Harley purists will have issues with this also.

 

Oh, I'm sure there are a bunch of hardcore bikers crapping themselves over this. As far as AMF, it was what it was, much like the Pinto is forever a part of Ford. Like I said though, there were one or two decent bikes that came out in that era.

 

A quiet Harley. I'd like to see that. If motorcars made the same racket they'd be booked and banned. The noise they make is deafening and not tolerated in any other brand of bike or car. I appreciate a good exhaust note, but not an ear-piercing racket. Bazza

This is off topic but; does anyone know the name of the company that makes Boss Hog motocycles? My wife's company is rumoured to be getting a contract with them and I want to look up some info on them. Can't find anything on google except pics and Harley's.

 

No, I mean the 1%ers. I don't consider the weekend warriers as hardcore anything.
