I be good BCGray, OH and dry apart for a cold *achoooo* developing ............. thanks for the concern :)

You'd be mistaked to believe a country that has rain a fair bit would be prepared for this, but sadly we need at least 4 of 5 disasters before we act!

Great to hear that all the UK MG'ers who've replied seem to be OK. We get lots of rain, but usually a few days notice (from cyclones) so we can get ready in advance. Still Nth Queenslanders get flooded out yearly, particularly our #1 highway heading south. Bazza

Yep, just the odd puddle here on the South coast. It seems to be the Yorkshire area that has been hit the worst.

Heavy rains here in outer and rural areas during the month caused floodings also. There was even a highway washed out/collapsed causing deaths. So I can understand what those in UK must be experiencing.

Great you guys get all the rain you could need and we get droughts.:(

That's where it gets funny. For all the rain some parts of the UK are getting right now, it's highly likely that by the end of the summer they will be on a hosepipe ban for various things e.g. car washing etc. And it isn't because it is going to get incredibly hot either. Water management is pathetic, even after years of awareness around the changing climate.

Very true, where I am is lucky as we dont generally have water bans, but Thames water Londoninium is the worst offender, it has bans in times of heavy rain, and for the reasons Lev stated bad managment and lack of investment in the infastructure, yes we have a Gov body that oversees Water, but Thames get around the water leaks in the pipes by turning down the water pressure, thus the leaks are not noticeable.

Why, we've always had rain? and much heavier than this..... just seems to be more newer houses built in the wrong areas that are prone to flooding and adds to the damage sustained, old towns dont have good drainage due to water companies not giving a hoot.. over if they can leave crumbling infastructure and not have to replace they make big profits, then we never take preventative measures until things go wrong at least 5 times for the Gov to act,

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6564173.stm

Then if you look back at the 1947 doc and look down a few pages, we had Heavy snow in Feb 8th this year.... I think not, a few CMs is not heavy to what its been in the past?

And then we have Global Cooling to contend with, while I'd agree to some extent industrialisation hasnt helped, also are we just not going through a natural climate shift of this earth of ours, dont forget we not been around much.

I digress on Global Climature change tho as the main issue is now the poor folk without homes, lost possesions etc this and the lack of proper prevention in areas deemed to be @ flood risk will cause £b to fix, not to mention the offshoot to this of rising insurance premiums.

Enviroment Agencys Webby, where if your in UK you can enter your postal code to see if your in a risk area http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/flood/?lang=_e

How so very true! Take Tewkesbury, Glos., for example. They went and built this town ON the flood plain, and wonder why EVERY year it floods out, homes are destroyed and getting home insurance is almost impossible now. I have driven by the river so many times and wondered where the river actually is. Often you can only define the river bank by the boats that were moored along it before the rains came, but now require another boat to be able to get to them!

Yeah but I live in Australia, and as everyone knows we're the water management kings.:major

Oh wait, that's a different country, we use more water per something-or-rather than any other country. So much for the Bedouin Theory.

Same in Australia, Halo. No one wants to build any dams or infrastructure that would be expensive, and 'prolly not finished in their political lifetime (hence, no credit - Duh!).

Yeppers on the rainfall. Even Perth gets more rain (usually), than some counties in the U.K. We just get it over a much shorter period, and then there is the 45+ deg. C Summers.

Those are called sucker holes. You'r a sucker when you see one and think it is going to brighten up ;) We get those in Oregon too :D

5 people died in the rainfall. One bloke got his foot stuck in the grid and drowned. And a teenage boy was swept away. It was very serious and a really bad thing to happen. There was billions of pounds of damage people. Hundreds lost there homes and personal possesions. My thoughts are with the people who have worked all there lives to get what they have got, to have it taken away so suddenly. And with the families of those who have lost loved ones in those horrible circumstances.

  29. Anupu

    Anupu Private E-2

Yes, it's clear that it was serious and painful for those involved, but thinking about it isn't doing any good, and for some of us the only way to deal with situations like this is to laugh about it.

If you want to help them you can send them money, anything is more productive than reminding us how tragic the disaster was.

  30. DavidGP

Send them money where? I not seen any charitable organisation setup yet on this to help victims.

Sadly that doesnt happen in the UK, as if we have a disaster no other country hands us money to help, but if other countries have disasters then its us who do the large handouts of cash to other countries who have such disasters!

The UK gov carries the cost of all of this, as well as the insurers.

I think Waynes thoughts were well founded and shows compassion for others, for telling him to send money over thoughts, you have no idea of his monitary situation, he maybe fine or not for spare cash!

LOL Didnt see this till now LOL

@ Anupu, I was not dissing anyones comments here. And didnt mean to offend. I was just stating that it was a serious matter. And to be honest mate, I wish i did have money to give to charity. But the way I see it 90% of the money you put into a charity ends up going on running the thing. And as Halo mentioned my income is pretty much a joke, and i have a child on the way which is my priority.

I was just commenting because the place is not so very far from where I live. And i thought it was a sad occasion. I wasnt asking for people to cry and have pity.

    Anyway forget it :)

Oh and btw, I apologise for the bad English used in my previous post I just re-read it! Someone needs to go back to school

Working for a non-profit organization myself, I wanted to just address this statement. This is not to disagree on what Wayne has said for the specific incident of the flooding in the UK, because in that case he is most likely correct, as there is no specific agency set up to deal with this. But charities and non-profits in general is what I would just like to make mention to, and general daily/monthly/annual charity giving, so that people do not get discouraged and quit giving altogether, which would be a disaster in itself.

Registered organizations are held accountable for their indirect costs through auditing, and this has to be declared. Often a rate is set that is permissible and in the US is usually between 10-15% maximum, just for the record.

Speaking of floods - big floods still in the south east of Oz. No lives lost, yet (A.F.A.I.K.), but a lot of people in affected areas have lost everything they own. Not good, - pretty ironic since a few months back they were in one of the worst droughts in history.

That's Australia for ya, either drought or flood, eh.

As Phantom said, it's either a feast or a famine, of water, here in OZ.

In Cairns we currently have 4" (100mm) of water flowing over the top of the spillway continuously as we have had plenty of rain this season.

Wish we could pipe water to the South of Queensland state from North Queensland, like the pipeline built from Perth to Coolgardie (Kalgoorlie?) in the early 1900's.

They had vision then, and the guts to build it, in spite of all the political and physical difficulties against them. Bazza

Maybe, but in the end thinking about them helps no one but yourself, at least if you send them money, any amount at all, or even just belongings you don't need it will help. If you just think about them they wont know, their lives will still be just as hard as it was before so my point is get out there and do something if you want to help them instead of wasting your time making other people feel bad.

Sorry if I've just resurrected this Thread after a long time, I've been playing a lot of NWN2 lately.
