Followed instructions, still have virus

    Hi all...

I have the Smitfraud virus and others as well...

I followed all the instructions in the Read & Run Me First sticky, as well as the special removal instructions for Smitfraud. Spybot keeps finding Smifraud & it can't get rid of it.

I'm attaching all the relevant scans to this post & I will do another post after this to include the remaining ones.

The only scan I don't have is BitDefender. I did it but saved it wrong, so it's in html, not text. Obviously I will do it again & save it correctly if necessary... just let me know. If it helps, when I look at the html page, it tells me that my TrendMicro PC-cillin keeps finding Rootkit.Agent.DP and can't disinfect it.

Also I couldn't use CounterSpy so I did AVG instead.

Thanks in advance for your help!

That's what the READ ME instructs you to save. Then you are just suppose the change the file name to have a .txt extension instead of .html and then you can attach it. So please do so.

Also you need to install HijackThis into the proper folder. You have it installed exactly where we request that you not install it. You have it here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Megan Page.MJP-XPS06.000\Desktop\Malware Stuff\analyse.exe

You need to have it here:

    C:\Program Files\HJT\analyse.exe or even C:\Program Files\HijackThis\analyse.exe

Is your copy of Spy Sweeper a paid version or a free trial version? If free, uninstall it now.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

You have a very nasty infection which is more than likely going to require having your Windows XP bootable CD. Do you have it (just in case we need it) ?

Now let's get started on your clean up.

First uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Now Download this file - combofix.exe
    1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    2. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    aebaaeb.dll
After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    aebaaeb.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    aebaaeb.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6AB5B7CB-FBCF-441E-945E-3B145B2B62CA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhff.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. ComboFix
    2. Avenger
    3. GetRunKey
    4. ShowNew
    5. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Thank you for your help.

Ok so far I have reinstalled HJT to Program Files, uninstalled SpySweeper (it was a paid subscription that I let lapse months ago) and removed Windows Messenger.

I am attaching a new HJT log (in case you need it) and the text version on the BitDefender scan.

I do have the Win XP bootable CD.

I'm going to move on and do the rest of your instructions and will post again when I have completed them.

    Ok I completed your instructions.

Everything went smoothly except HJT said there was an error when executing the fix... I attached the log that it created when that happened, in case you want to see it.

So far my computer seems to be ok... The main symptom I've been having in the last 24 hours or so (after doing the instructions in the Read & Run me sticky) has been my TrendMicro PC-cillin icon telling me that it is "scanning outgoing mail"... this happens almost constantly, even though I am not sending any outgoing mail! But as I type this post, it hasn't happened yet, so that is a good sign.

Avenger did not run properly last time. I'm going to post a new fix below. Make sure you follow the directions EXACTLY as written. When I say to download and extract to your Desktop, you must do this.

Make sure you shutdown/exit your TrendMicro Antispyware and AVG Antispyware programs before doing the below. Also make sure you select all lines with HJT and don't forget to click Fix Checked after all browsers are closed.

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: rbwlxqwx - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\aebaaeb.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

After clicking Fix checked, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
