So, the FBI found a way to get the info they wanted without violating the 4A. Nice.

And all without forcing a private company to do their work for them.

So is the lawsuit dropped? Because according to the FBI, Apple did not comply to an order authorized by the All Writs Act. Thus Apple broke the law. Now why would the FBI drop the case?

Wouldn't you if you finally got what you wanted and knew Apple can't hold you back anymore? It's just not worth wasting your valuable time with them.

I have a feeling that you have not read Apples official letter, and have not read the actual warrant, or the actual lawsuit.

The link you posted is chock full of misinformation and misdirection.

The FBI dropped the case because it had no merit, and when Apple law team took it to the Supreme Court, the true agenda of using the archaic "All Writs Act" improperly would be exposed, and then the FBI would no longer be able to outspend smaller companies in court to impose their will (not law) upon business.

I seriously doubt that they hacked the phone. They can say what they wish, they can fabricate things and then go after other suspects and say they got the info from the phone, but they will never have to prove they gained access or cracked it, EVER.

Oh and my favorite part is about wether or not they would share with apple how it was cracked, so apple can improve security. Comical.

So you're calling the FBI "liars" now? Why would the FBI lie about hacking into the terrorist's phone? What do they have to gain from a lie like that? It makes no sense at all.

Let me help you out here. The way you phrased your reply comes off as telling me what I said, but not what I said. If you phrase it to "Are you calling the FBI liars?", I might have a better chance at making sense of this for you.

But then, maybe the FBI should turn over all their data to me. I mean, if they have nothing to hide, no need for secrets right? Are they supporting Terrorism? Fast and Furious?

I forget what the percentage of public record requests go un answered, you know, the freedom of information act.

Something like 40% get some of the records they ask for. How would I be able to verify any claim I make?

So no, I did not directly call them liars, but rather pointed out that if they wish to lie, they most certainly can lie and have reason to lie, and we have no way to check out the truth.

And I also stated my opinion that I don't believe they were able to access the Iphone in question, but rather are backing down from the pummeling Apple was prepared to give them. And I believe what they have said or leaked to the media is merely a face saving ploy. Can I prove it? Nope. Can or will they prove their story? Nope.

But if the FBI was so all about the law etc, they would not have dropped the case, because in their eyes, by their admission Apple was in violation of the court order they pushed through. AND, the claim was that neither party was going to back down, yet the FBI did, which is quite suspect to their original motivations.

Nice try with nothing but gibberish there. What you said does not do one thing at all to deny that you said "I seriously doubt that they hacked the phone." By the way you might want to call USA Today and CNBC "liars" too, since they are reporting this story. And yet the FBI is showing no signs of disapproval with it.

The gibberish is more about what the FBI wanted - a way to hack into any iPhone it wished, and using an archaic law to unsuccessfully achieve that - and saying for months, contrary to the industry consensus, that there was no other way to access the data.
The FBI has mud on its face and looks, as usual like it and the CIA looked posted 9/11, as incompetent.
I'm sure other enforcement agencies in all the countries targeted by political violence are also examining communication data but without the hullabaloo that the FBI has created unnecessarily. No organisation, least of all Apple, are sticking their fingers up to 'Uncle Sam' since they cooperate with them endlessly and seamlessly.
And I am sure an investigation will take place into what they knew about the suspects before, and if there was evidence, why their phones weren't already tapped, after all the laws are there to allow that.
Baseless (and rather funnily inaccurate) flag waving around 'patriotism' is neither very sensible or attractive.

I would say 70% of the media is total BS this is one reason why i don't watch the new's any more.FBI can not do it with out a hacker.

Well, gosh, that's shocking! Not one of us predicted it would affect any other phones and totally believed the FBI when they said they only wanted it for that one phone, and we were being so unreasonable when we said people should look at the big picture. How weird!

I really hope that's the case but I have my doubts about it since they first asked Apple to hack the phone.

They didn't ask Apple to hack an individual phone. They asked Apple to create a piece of software that would simply override encryption on any such phone. That is what Apple rightly and legally refused to do. That's a fact reported widely. The FBI knew full well that there was a clear industry consensus that the data on that phone in question could be accessed without the software requested. It is the dishonesty and incompetence of the FBI that has been revealed, not any 'unpatriotic' behaviour by Apple which was your central point in this thread - flag-waving based on numerous inaccuracies. That doesn't protect me or anyone else from risk.

And today I heard, (not verified) that the software they were trying to force apple to write by inappropriately citing and using the All Writs Act, would have left a live/realtime access to anybody using the Iphone. In other words, the backdoor was such that they could just listen in or read or intercept you conversations, communications any time they wanted---without a warrant.

I understand your point Tim. But words are just words here, I'm not losing any sleep over them. Whereas Apple in this case going as far to assist terrorists, I'm afraid I'm no fan of that. And I'm happy to see the FBI overcome it.

He's right, though. It's one thing to debate the issue, it's another to dismiss others as the evil supporters of terrorists, murderers and criminals. This is the third thread on the subject and it inevitably devolved into this sort of ad hominem character assassination. Perhaps this needs to be argumentum non grata.

I came here to post something similar. A debate is an exchange of ideas. Formal or informal, ideally the people debating are listening to each other's arguments and presenting counter arguments that support their own opposing view point, and they do it with a certain amount of civility. Personal attacks and insults have no place in a real debate.

    These are perfectly said.

Hint...if you want threads to stay open, do not attack anyone personally... or their ideas. Really its a simple concept. Argue your own point intelligently... with facts.
