I have been having problems for over a year getting into websites that use reCaptcha. I've tried IE 11 and Firefox (all versions). I suspect some program I have loaded is creating interference but which one. How can I find out easily?
Windows 7 64 bit operating system
Firefox 56 is my main browser
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What problems? Be more specific, please.

When I enter my userid and password I get a message telling me to update my browser even though it may be the latest one available.

There are newer versions of Firefox available.

Windows 7 64 bit should either be using FF Quantum v 57
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
click the green button that says Windows 64 bit

or FF ESR (Extended Support Release) v 52.5.3
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/
    download link on the right.
You do not have to be an organization to use it. I have it on my four Windows 7 home computers. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, doesn't offer a new version every 6 weeks but does patch any time there is a security issue.

I am aware of Firefox Quantum...in fact I installed it last month. After finding out that almost all my addons would not work in Quantum and I didn't like the format in general, I went back to the version of Firefox I use now. I may check out the FF ESR link. The reCaptcha problem started suddenly about a year ago and has persisted through several versions of Firefox as well as IE 11.

    Have you tried Chrome?

  8. firestorm1

No, I haven't yet tried Chrome. Something happened about a year ago to start this problem. Something on my computer is causing this on whatever browser I'm using.
Is there a way to bypass all the programs on the computer and maybe turn them on one at a time to locate the problem.....would starting in safe mode work that way?

You could try safe mode.....or right click start/run and type in msconfig

To see what is set to run at startup, in the search/run box type in
    Code:
    msconfig
    and hit the enter key.
Next click on the startup tab.

Do you see anything strange in there? Something that appeared about a year ago? Drat, I thought a starting date would appear. It looks like only a disabled date appears.

Nothing strange that I saw in the startup tab. Is it possible that AVG antivirus Free Edition may be interfering with reCaptcha? I know it doesn't play well with some other antivirus programs.

How many AV programs do you have installed?

  13. firestorm1

    firestorm1 Private E-2

Only AVG Antivirus Free Edition. I had this on Windows XP and liked it. When I went to Windows 7 there was a different program already installed that I didn't particularly care for so I disabled it and installed AVG. That's when I discovered disabling the other antivirus program wasn't enough. It had to be deleted from the computer altogether. I don't remember now what the other program was. Anyway, the trouble with reCaptcha didn't start until some time later.

Then do as suggested and try Chrome. See if the problem persists.

I apologize for not getting back sooner. I'm going to try Chrome but it may take awhile. I have to use a slow dial up internet connection to download it. I'll let you know.

Good God ..... dial up still exists?

  18. firestorm1

    firestorm1 Private E-2

Yes, it still exists and I still have to use it.....but that's another long story. I have tried and failed several times to download Chrome. The closest I got was seven hours before it stalled.....again....so no Chrome. Any more ideas to find out what could be causing reCaptcha to keep failing or better yet a program to bypass it?

Got a friend who can download it for you and transfer via thumb drive?

If you have a library with free internet access, you could go there, ask if you can use a USB stick to download the chrome browser and try it that way.

Here is a portable version with an offline installer
    https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable

It should install on the USB stick. Then when you get home, simply copy the Chrome folder to the desktop of your computer and you have the portable browser ready to go.

I run Chrome portable from a USB stick. It is slower running from a stick but I prefer it not installed or sitting on my dekstop.

Thanks, I'll try that. It may be a couple of weeks. I don't get to town often.

No hurry, the thread will still be here when you attempt to do this.

I got lucky and was able to get a copy of Chrome from a laptop downloaded to a thumb drive. I came back to my computer and booted Chrome up from the thumb drive. The reCaptcha problem still persisted in Chrome just like in IE and Firefox. I even temporarily disabled AVG just in case one of the virus definition updates was causing the problem.
    Any more ideas?

Is it all sites or just a few? If a few, please link them to us. It was suggested to try safe mode by the people on the Mozilla help site to you, did you do that?

The above website is the main one that I'm having trouble with. Not all sites protected by reCaptcha are giving trouble but I can't think of any at the moment that work for me. The above site keeps telling me to upgrade to a supported browser even though I've tried multiple versions of different browsers. I'll try to send a shot of the reCaptcha notice. How exactly would I try "safe mode"?

    1. Open Mozilla Firefox. ...
    2. Click the Menu icon. ...
    3. Open Help. ...
    4. Click Restart with Add-ons disabled. ...
    5. Click Continue in Safe Mode. ..

Please explain step number 5. I clicked Restart with Add-ons disabled but then there was no Continue in Safe Mode in the help menu. I tried to get into one website with the reCaptcha issue while at this point with the same result. Was I in Safe Mode then?

No Adblockers installed. Issue exists in several browsers, not just Firefox.

    Might want to consider that.

Have you actually booted your PC into "Safe Mode with Networking" and tried accessing the webpage?

Yes but it gave me the same results.
Today, I finally managed to get into one of the websites that has been giving me fits for months. I used IE and kept getting a notification that reCAPTCHA could not be contacted and for me to check my internet connection and try again. After repeated tries it went through. I had a internet connection the whole time in spite of the notification. I am now almost sure this whole issue is closely related to my very slow internet connection....24 kbps on an average day. I do know today's technology is geared to a much, much faster speed. Most things others take for granted are out of my reach.
Anyway, thanks for all the ideas you've given me to try. I think you went above and beyond, so to speak. I have learned some things I didn't know....at least what doesn't work.
I'd like to leave this thread open so I can update it at a later time as things change. Again, thanks.
