I am trying to backup a folder from an external hard drive to a Blu-Ray disk. I have had to use this format as the folder is too big to fit on a DVD-R. The backup reaches around 48% and then stops with the message "Error 0x80071AC3 Volume is dirty. Run CHKDSK and try again" I have run CHKDSK on the drive (which I have assigned the drive letter J: ) and it found no faults with the hard drive - see results attached . When I attempt the backup again using a new Blu-Ray disk the error just happens again. On checking possible solutions online it is suggested that the USB port may be faulty but as the backup reaches about 48% before falling over I assume that is not the issue as surely it would fail straight away if it was a USB problem. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Does the same thing happen if you try copying the data over to the optical disc in chunks?

Must admit I havn't tried that. It is actually two folders I am trying to copy (not one as I said in original post) - one folder is 4.92Gb and the other one is 4.64Gb. I'll try doing one and see what happens.

Tried copying just the one folder and I thought it was going to work but it crashed at 77%.

Thought I would try another experiment - I tried copying all the files directly from the camera's SD card to the optical disk, bypassing the external HDD part but it failed again. They weren't in folders on this occasion so that wouldn't have been a factor and it doesn't always fail on the same individual file. I'm at a loss now - could it be a fault with the Blu-Ray writer? It is less than a year old and I havn't had any issues with it before.

OK yet another experiment - successfully copied a 2.2Gb folder from the external HDD to a DVD-R with no problems. Assuming that means the Blu-Ray drive is OK? So do I have a suspect batch of BD-R disks? o_O

Thank you - I will have a look at that link shortly. I maybe should have explained better - the folders in question contain digital photos that I take on motorsport events. I already have them on a hard drive plus an external backup hard drive but the reason I want copies on a removable media (DVD-R or BD-R) is so that can give them to a relative for possible future use when I retire from this type of photography as I am now in my 70s.

It might very well be a case of bad disks as it worked with a DVD. It would be a somewhat more tedious process to use the smaller disks but, if it works...

I had a look at that link you posted earlier and I think reducing the write speed might be the way to go. The guy who says he found a fix posted how to change the write speed in File Exporer but when I try it I don't get the options he talks about so I'm back to square one.

I know you ran chkdsk, but might try this: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...is-dirty/1341e0b3-0ead-4d49-a866-ad5e3c028aea
Another work around is to make an ISO, then burn that. https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/folder2iso.html
    or https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/cdburnerxp.html
With CDBurnerXP, you can watch the video, but in short, drag files to the bottom window, or click the plus, then File > Save the compilation to ISO.

the other limitations are filename / path lengths and no single files above 4GB, best I recall.

I managed to get a workaround. When I get the options to select which type of disk I want to burn I am 99% sure I always used the USB Flashdrive option on previous occasions but this choice is what was giving me the trouble with the Blu-Ray disk. I tried selecting the CD/DVD drive option and surprisingly this worked. Maybe I was just having a 'senior moment' and it was this option that I used previously but I'm sure it wasn't. Anyway, it has worked so I know what to do next time. Thanks for your help.
