My laptop is aging and starting to have problems so I'm considering a tablet. Anyone care to comment? Probably goin to jump on it in a day or two.

I've yet to have my hands on a tablet that didn't fall short in some regard. Granted, it's been a very small sample set.

Considering the trade-offs given to use a laptop rather than a desktop box, would you really be satisfied with the greater trade-offs of a tablet?

Obviously, it is ultimately your choice, based on your own individual needs and preferences.

The choice is either a new laptop or a surface tablet...both I think would be equally expensive...but I probably should look into having my laptop serviced ( some keys are no longer working.)

If the machine still has life in it then, yeah, that might be the best option. Fewer headaches, anyway: no transferring files, getting the OS set up just so... It's such a PITA.

I'm done with MS and Windows. Any new hardware device will not have Windows on it. Linux is too much of a hassle for me. I'm older. I want to use a device not spend time fiddling with the OS.

Look at a chromebook; a cheaper alternative to a Surface laptop. My husband grabs the chromebook to do read the newspaper online daily and watch Zoning Board video re-runs. (He is on the Zoning Board.)
Wifi printing was so easy to get going and updates to the chromeOS don't break things. It is a very pleasant change away from Windows.

I do like my android tablets but it is easier to type on the chromebook than the tablets so you can get more done. I think you'd get frustrated with an android tablet in terms of productivity.

Yes, I had my hesitation about going with android..thinking some apps wouldn't run on it, but I think I'm mistaken on that.
    Got any suggestions?

If you are used to an android cellphone, then a tablet has no learning curve.

All my tablets (currently two 10+" and one 8") are Samsung so I don't know much about other brands. My very first android tablet was an ASUS but I ended up having to e-cycle it because it stopped loading the desktop. I let it try to load for 24 hours and it never loaded. I couldn't fix anything if the desktop never loaded.

I rarely use the 8" but I bought it on sale for $80 just to read books. It is easier to cart around. My newer 10" tablet came with MS Office 365 but I rarely use it. I am used to using Free Office on the computers.

What apps do you positively need?

I do have an Android phone...but rarely use it for anything other than calls. keyboard and big fingers...lol I bought an ASUS computer once and it was a pos so I returned it.
Good question...the only app I need is whatsapp on my phone. All I use is a search engine on the laptop-Chrome,firefox, etc.
Going to have cataract surgery in the near future because my eyesight is so bad I have to rely on autocorrect as I hit the wrong keys often... and yes, I would like to read books, but that's a future consideration.
Agreed. I probably will buy a new keyboard if the guy in town can't fix the errant key. So much cheaper than any other avenue. I appreciate your input...sincerely...IU find these kind of conundrums difficult since my stroke :)

Well it pays to think through everything before you buy something and regret it. I usually research before I plunk down money for hardware.

A new keyboard is probably your best option. There used to be a small shop near us where the old gentleman did computer repairs. He replaced a keyboard on my husband's Acer laptop. I was afraid to do it working with the ribbon connector cable. I watched as he did it and now felt I could do it myself. Sadly, he retired.

Ah, cataract surgery is a miracle. I had both eyes done within 3 weeks of each other before Covid turned everything upside down. I could believe how great I could see with a day of the surgery.

Like you, I bought a smart phone to make calls. About the only app I wanted is the local tv station's weather app so I can see the radar map. I don't want to surf on a 6" screen - to me that is a waste of time.

Indeed!! I ordered a replacement keyboard, but viewing vids on doing it,I am backing off..heat sink and all...so I contacted repair shops and so far no one wants to touch it. So I am back to considering a chromebook...
    breaking news...lol bought

I couldn't find any bad reviews...yes, as are most computers these days, .it's made in asia. But my local guy finally got back to me so if he can do his magic, I'll probably be sending it back.
