Windows Boot Manager says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the problem."
It then tells me to insert the installation disc to repair it. I don't have one sooooo ...
I changed the boot sequence to CD drive first.
I insert the recovery disk from the recovery set for my notebook.
    Same message.
    I try Ultimate Boot Disc.
    Same message.
    I try Megaboot.
    Same message.
I get a light blue screen that says it will keep trying but it fails every time.
I went through the diagnostics, which I can still get to, and it says everything is okay.
    HELP!!!
Can I load the tweaking fixit program onto a bootable disc?

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode???

    Safe mode
    Safe mode with networking
    Safe mode with command prompt
    None of them worked.
I created a USB boot drive and changed the boot order. It just shows the HP logo for a while, goes black, and restarts showing the HP logo.
I'm getting the feeling this thing's goose is cooked.

No necessarily. Try booting it with a Linux distro, if possible. YouTube has many such videos as to how to do it

I pulled the HD and put it in a dock and then ran it on my PC. It spun up and I was able to get all of the info I needed.
I then changed the boot sequence on my PC to USB with external HD and it booted my PC perfectly.
I even pulled the HD out of the offending unit and changed the boot sequence to USB external HD and it still didn't boot.
Apparently, the motherboard is shot. Otherwise why would the HD work flawlessly except when installed in this particular unit?
I'm going to keep the HD and take the carcass to the local computer shop and give it to them for parts/scrap, etc.
THANKS TO ALL FOR THE RESPONSES.
    CALL THIS ONE SOLVED.
