Monster Hunter: World Kinda Bricked My Gpu, But Is It Permanent?

Hi there, to who takes their time to read this, I appreciate it.

I have a dual monitor setup. My secondary monitor is a ASUS VG258. My main screen is a LG TV 34" (I'm not certain about the exact model). I use Windows 10. And my GPU is a GeForce GTX 4060.

What happened: I was playing Monster Hunter: World, and after I finished a mission, as the rewards interface was loading, I pressed the Win logo key to be able to gain access to my mouse in order to select my 2nd screen. As I did this, my main screen went black and never turned back on. Every attempt at turning on the TV was failed. The red light on the TV would go from solid red (turned off) to blinking red.

The next day I tried turning my TV back on and it turned on! I was so relieved. However, it was short felt as my TV started blinking to black screen again. I turned it off and back on, and tho it did display image, there were long green lines all across the display. And in my attempts to restart the TV it stopped displaying image again.

Initially I thought my TV died, so I took it to the shop where I bought it as it was still under warranty. A day later, I was called to pick up my TV and I saw it showing clear crisp images, but the signal was coming from the antenna. So I took the TV home and connected it to my PC, long and behold, the red light starts blinking and it won't turn on. Which then made me believe the issue had nothing to do with my TV but instead with my GPU.

Some additional info: this wasn't the first time I Win logo out of the game, and whenever I did this before, the game would go into windowed mode until I clicked back on the window and it would revert back to full screen, or, it would flash black into windowed mode. Whenever the screen was connected to my GPU, despite not displaying image and on (even after the red blinking light), Windows (10) does in some way recognise the screen as it turns my working screen back as a secondary screen. When clicking on identify screens it identifies (the working screen) as screen 2, and, I can drag my mouse over to the main screen. So it seems to recognise it, it just won't display image.

What I've done:
- I have turned off my PC, then disconnect the HDMI cable both on my GPU and my TV, disconnect the power of my TV and let it sit like that for about 5 to 10 mins and retry connecting first the HDMI cable, then TV power and then turn on my PC - no avail
- Switched HDMI cables. I have 2 extra already used cables and 1 extra cable new still in the box - no avail
- Switched ports on my GPU - no avail
- Re-installed GPU drivers - no avail

I don't know where to go from here, is there other things I could try? Or did my GPU brick because of the game?

 

If the shop only used the antenna input, they did a lousy, lazy job of troubleshooting.

Did you tell them you use it as a computer monitor?

If Monitor 2 works fine with your card, then most likely the card if fine. If Monitor 2 works fine via all your card's ports, then for sure, the card is fine.

Can you try Monitor/TV 1 on another computer?

 

Yeah, unfortunately this is the situation. First, I live in Macau. I moved out pretty young so upon returning I had forgotten Cantonese. So I was relegated to the translation tool on my phone. This is also a 2nd hand shop, on a street when translated to English is "Rubbish Street" So, not only is this a 2nd hand shop and language barrier, when I went there, the man working there wasn't present, his wife was and she's the one that took the TV in. I tried telling her the issue is on the HDMI and that I use it as a PC monitor, however, she waved me off and continued doing other stuff. Anyway, do you think this is a TV issue or a GPU issue?

I cannot try on another computer as I don't have another PC. I might just have to see if I can find a local friend with more time to return to the shop I guess.

 

I don't know but determining that is your first priority. Did you try Monitor 2 in each of the card's HDMI ports? If Monitor 2 works in each port, then the problem surely is pointing to the TV's signal source selection function.

 

Yeah, monitor 2 works on the input monitor 1 was. So it in fact is not my GPU, but rather the TV.

 

Well, just for giggles, all TVs today are essentially dedicated computers with a integrated monitor and tuner. And essentially all TVs are not really completely powered off when you press the power button on the front of the TV, or its remote. They simply go into a standby mode, listening for the next "turn on" command.

To that, have you tried a "cold" reboot of the TV? "Cold" in this context does NOT imply temperature, but rather removing ALL voltages (as opposed to a "hot" or "live" circuit that has voltage running through it).

A cold reboot will require unplugging the TV from the wall outlet (or, if it has a master power switch in back, flipping that to "0" or "Off". That ensures it is NOT in standby mode and the power supply is not receiving or outputting any voltages. Just like our computers, when in standby, there are still set settings that remain. If a setting is, for whatever reason, missing or corrupt, a "cold" reboot will [hopefully] reset it. That's a good thing.

Wait 30 seconds or so to ensure any residual voltage in storage capacitors has sufficiently decayed.

Then cross fingers and toes and plug it in again and see what happens. You might get lucky.

 

Yeah, this was one of the first things I attempted. I actually powered off my PC, took off the HDMI from the PC and TV and disconnected the TV from the plug and left it off for like 5 - 10 mins. When this didn't work I tried switching the HDMI cables, and even tried a brand new cable I had still in its package. Unfortunately, none of these things helped.

 

Well, I would rather it be the TV that failed than the computer.
