Got a friend’s 2016 iMac computer he wanted a RAM upgrade. You got to take everything out of it to get to the RAM.

Anyway, I noticed he had a 5400 RPM old school hard drive in it. I suggested a SSD drive upgrade. Any pitfalls common cloning a HD in a Mac? We have some cloning stuff that worked great for cloning drives back in the Win XP days.

Thanks for the info! Got it done with an external drive cloner. No luck on the RAM upgrade, his computer has the ram directly on the mobo.

And I am guessing that there was NO socket(s) to add additional memory like in the old/early days of laptops that had both soldered on memory & socket(s) to add more?

Nope. No way to add memory. Pretty cheesy in my opinion , but it is 10 years old and still working. The SSD helped out a good bit.

That's a bummer about not being able to add more memory, and as you said CHEESY (CHEAP).

Did that model have some options when new (like some cellphones) on how much memory was available? Asking as I have two very old Toshiba laptops (early 2000s) that each had 2 base memory versions. Each of the 2 different models had the same mother board the only difference was the amount of memory presoldered onto boards. Also each model had a socket for adding a memory stick/module (PC100/133). Years ago on one of the laptops I tried to source the higher base memory mother board to swap in but the Ebay seller had the wrong info on it and it was the 32MB version not the 64MB one :(. That extra 32MB would have helped along with 128MB PC133 stick I installed to help run Win XP Pro 32Bit. But I digress...

Hey, I have laptops older than 10 years still running, this one I'm using now has a BIOS dated 2009.

Good to hear at least the SSD helped a lot on performance.

Sounds like if you wanted to add more ram you would probably need to solder more ram on to the board. But unless you solder regularly that is a nightmare.

Depends on the mother board, there may NOT be ANY provisions for soldering on more memory. I have 2 old Toshiba Laptops from different years (both late 1990s early 2000s). Each had 2 versions of the same series/model. One with a base memory of 32Meg & the other with 64Meg On Board (each Model could have a couple/few CPU options within the series of the same CPU MFG AMD or Intel) BUT The Mother Boards were the same within the AMD series, and same within the Intel series. Each had a 32Meg or 64Meg option for Base On Board Memory. IF it was a 32Meg option Mother Board it DID have the empty solder pads/space for adding more memory up to 64Meg ON BOARD. BUT you ALSO would have had to add additional SMT components so that additional Memory would be recognized & function. ALL these boards ALSO had 1 socket so you could add a memory module/stick (the older one max memory stick that could be added was 128Meg. The newer one was 256Meg. BUT BOTH would be ADDED to what ever Base Memory Option was on the board).

Newer systems/computers are MORE & MORE about Cost Cutting. SO it is possible there is/was NO Memory Options available for that model Fred_G was working on. Added to the fact it is an Apple product, who is notorious for NOT being (either very or more likely not at all) end user serviceable/customizable/upgradeable in addition to being typically a lot more expensive vs their IBM PC compatible counterparts.
