Winapi 32-bit Docs?

Hi! I mostly stopped programming for Windows except for ANSI C programs and want to go back and work on some old programs. I also want to make a few utilities for emulation. I'm looking for docs on Windows programming in C. Where can I find them? BTW, I use Open Watcom C and want a better C compiler. Any recommendations?

For the API reference, start with Microsoft's Windows API index:
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/apiindex/windows-api-list

The "Win32" label does not mean the documentation stopped at 32-bit Windows. The reference covers the desktop Windows API used by both x86 and x64 programs. Look up the actual function you need (CreateWindowEx, GetMessage, CreateFile, etc.); its page lists the header, import library and minimum supported OS. The API declarations are usable from C even when a tutorial's sample code happens to use C++.

For ordinary 32-bit Windows desktop utilities, one straightforward option is MSVC Build Tools plus the Windows SDK. You do not have to install the full Visual Studio IDE. Select the Desktop development with C++ workload, then use the developer command prompt configured to target x86. The toolset includes a C compiler despite the workload's C++ name; .c files are compiled as C, and /TC can explicitly select C.

    Microsoft's setup guide is here:
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/build/building-on-the-command-line

I would keep your Watcom setup alongside it until you have decided the oldest OS you need to support. A current Windows toolchain is not a drop-in replacement for a DOS/Win16 target, and building an x86 executable does not by itself guarantee it will run on every old Windows release. Are these utilities intended to run on current Windows while controlling emulators, or inside an old Windows/DOS guest? That distinction changes the compiler recommendation.

Thank you. I can look at it online but prefer an offline reference. Is there one?

Yes, if a searchable folder of reference text would work for you rather than a compiled help file. Microsoft publishes the documentation sources in two repositories:

    https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/sdk-api
The individual function/structure reference is under sdk-api-src/content, organised by header. For example, the winuser folder contains the windowing API entries.

    https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/win32
The desktop-src folder contains the conceptual articles and programming guides.

On each repository, Code > Download ZIP gives you a local snapshot without installing Git. Extract it and open/search the .md files in a text editor or Markdown viewer. The trade-off is that this isn't a ready-made CHM/MSDN help system: some cross-references and included material still need the online site, and you won't get an automatically updated, fully linked offline website just by downloading the ZIP.

If you specifically want the indexed Help Viewer interface, Microsoft still documents downloading books through Help Viewer > Manage Content > Add > Update. I haven't checked which Windows API books your installation's catalogue offers, so I would check that before installing Visual Studio solely for offline help. The two repository snapshots are the more direct option for keeping the reference text alongside your Watcom projects.
