Have been trying to install the free version of P.C.Tools antivirus. constantly get Msg. "application failed to initialise". Tried a variety of So-Called registry repairers, none worked. PcTools declined to assist in any way. I do have the P.C.Tools repair prog which calls for registry manipulation but wary of taking this step. Help from any source welcome.

    Welcome to MGs, grageek39. :)
    Some more information please.
    1. What operating system and service pack are you on?
    2. What antivirus did you have previously? Is it still on the
machine or has it been uninstalled it?
    3. Any other anti spyware installed, providing real time
    protection?
    4. What firewall do you have on board?
    5. Do you suspect that you system is infected?

I'll quote chaslang, MG admin on what he recommends.

Thanks Sikvik :-xp home sp3- using avg 8 (free), scans show nothing untoward. Firewall is from Microsoft. Have tried booting in safe mode and disabling avg on boot up. Still get msg :"application failed to initialise 0xc000142". Don't think avg acts in "realtime". Have previously used Malawarebytes, again not a realtime scanner. Surprisingly I have previously used PC Tools free version 8 but took it off for some reason that escapes me now.

Any reason you are on AVG 8? It Should have updated, as the current version is AVG 12!

Never a good idea to install a new antivirus before uninstalling the existing.

    Set msconfig to normal boot.

1.Down load to desktop, either Microsoft Security essentials or the Antivir installer, from chaslang's link.
    2. Download the AVG uninstall tool to desktop.

    3. Disconnect from the net.
    2. Uninstall AVG from Control Panels Add/ remove. Run the AVG cleaner tool.
    3. Install either Antivir or MSE- and update the same. Only one please. :)

    Cheers..
