Guys, have experienced the same problem but still not resolved here. I do not seem to be able to get the driver installed from CD rom. System keeps on asking for A drive. Is there an other way around or can I also use an external floppy drive ?

Yes MarioA, an External Floppy will work great. I did not have a floopy on my XPS 600 I went to the Computer and got an Iomega for $29 you may find it cheaper on Ebay. But why take the chance buy it new so you know it works. Get the Drivers from the Dell web site. Good luck I am having the same problem as you are also.

Thanks Tman, will try this week-end. Still have an external drive at work. Any hints you can give during installing or is this all selfdirecting ?

Hi MariaA this link will give you step by step instructions. Download both PDF. Files and read. If you have SATA and PATA opitions in your BIOS you will need the Legacy driver. Just click through the folders to find them and copy them to a formated floopy. As well as the media program. Anyway my Dell xps 600 is still under warranty and I am trouble shooting with them over the phone. They are sending me a new install CD for Windoxs XP Home service PK 2. They believe that might the problem. They also stated that because I have only 1 hard drive that I did not need to go through all these steps. Anyway keep posting as I will also best of luck.

My problem was solved by TEAM XPS. Its been a while since your post. You probly solved it by now. So I am posting this for any one who might have the same issues and happened to come across this page. I had the very same issue after trying to format my xps 600. Luckly it was under warranty. Turns out the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pak 2 Reinstallation CD that came with my computer did not have the correct SATA driver so it kept looping and giving me the very same symptoms as you. Because Dell does not ship that model any more they had to make me the CD all over again with the correct drivers it took about 4 days to get. Note this is not the same drivers on there web site. Once the CD arrived everything worked like a charm. Also you might want to get the XPS 600 Rescoure CD that came with the system also. It has the additional drivers but that CD was alright. Now this is the Part Number on the Dell windows XP Home Edition Service Pak 2 Reinstall CD DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTHER as it will not work because it won't have the correct drivers.
