I just reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP3. However, whenever I try to open most of the programs, I get the following error message:

    qw.exe - Application Error

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000034). Click on OK to terminate the application.

People in other forums suggested it might be a problem with DLLs, and suggested reinstalling the programs. Anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

Could it be a registry problem?

qw.exe is a launcher for Quicken.

Why did you reinstall XP SP3? Did you do a clean install or a repair install? I ask because if there was a problem, depending on what you did, the problem might still be there.

well, what happened I was trying to use file and settings transfer to move everything from my old HDD to a new one. In order to do that, Windows XP had to have the same service pack as my old computer. Once I updated to SP3, it worked fine, except I would get the same error message for almost every program (quicken was just an example)

    Ah,
moves things like your documents and emails.
All your programs must be reinstalled on the new computer. So if you mistakenly moved programs over thinking that they would work, this might be why you are getting errors.

I see. are there any good programs to transfer not just data like documents, MP3s, and other media, but also programs?

Appreciate your help by the way.

No. Programs do not transfer from one computer to another. Programs need to be freshly installed on another computer.
If you want exactly what was on the old computer on a new and/or larger hard drive that will be put into the same computer, you create a clone. There is a paid program called Acronis True Image that allows you to do this.

I'm not clear if you replaced just the hard drive or you replaced the computer.
If you replaced the hard drive, this ( making a clone) will work. If you replaced the computer, it will not work because the hardware is usually different between the two computers.

Do you still have the old hard drive with everything intact?

Yes, I hung onto it in case something went wrong.

I think I might try that with the trial version. I'm not entirely pleased with the way the reinstallation has turned out.

Success! I definitely recommend Acronis. It only took a few hours to backup my old system drive and restore it on the new one.
